Whitney Fights Back! Suing Mad
As we mentioned last December, Whitney Houston was sued by her stepmom, Barbara Houston.
Why? For what?????
It all goes back to 2003, when Whit's father passed away and Barbara claimed Whitney "improperly kept the proceeds from John Houston's $1 million insurance policy" after his death.
According to the lawsuit, Whitney was supposed to use $723,000 of the money to pay off the remaining mortgage on her father's Fort Lee, NJ, condominium. It was supposedly her dad's wish to do so.
But, now months later Whitney is countersuing her stepmother for $1.6 million!
According to Houston, step-mommy dearest owes HER money for failing to make the payments on the condo, which Babs has been living in for over two decades.
Whitney claims she provided her dad with the mortgage loan to buy the condo and she was still owed most of the money when he died.
So the question is, who was really supposed to receive the $1 million insurance inheritance, and what was the money to be used for?

A will wouldn't have helped in this situation. With insurance policies you name beneficiaries. If Whitney was named as the beneficiary, the money is hers and not subject to the provisions of a will. If Whitney's father had wanted his wife to have the insurance money, he should have named his wife as the beneficiary. If he didn't, there must have been a reason. I guess the best argument the wife has is that Whitney was named the beneficiary because she (according to the story here) provided the money for her father to get the condo so her father maybe intended the insurance policy to pay her back for that — if so, Whitney probably should pay off the condo. However, that should also mean that she, and not her stepmother, owns it. There could be an issue re: title to the condo. Maybe Whitney and her dad didn't have the presence of mind to put Whitney on title and stepmommy isn't willing to sign it over. But for someone with Whitney's means to end up in a situation like that would be just stupid. That's what lawyers and real estate agents are for.

MoMunnay is right on. It has nothing to do with Whitney being greedy…it's her money. Any existing will, even if it had provided that type of direction, is irrelevant. Money has to pass to an entity like a person or trust.
IF he had wanted to money to be used that way, he should have put it in the will. Whitney couldn't have gotten the Insurance money unless she was the legal beneficiary. Nothing in writing, Whitney could do as she please with the money. Maybe Barbara should have keep her mouth closed since she was living rent free. Stay tuned. Another episode of As The Stomach Turns.
