Billy Bob Backlash!
Well Billy Bob Thornton, you've succeeded in making a fine fine ass out of yourself!
Following a bizarrely disastrous interview on a Canadian radio show, the audience at Massey Hall on Thursday night did not shy from expressing their distaste for Billy Bob, booing at the actor musician music historian.
Stopping three songs into his set, Billy Bob tried to explain himself, calling radio interviewer Jian Ghomeshi an "asshole," saying,
"Boo all you want, but I want to say something…. We're really happy to be here, but I need to say something. I talked to this a–hole yesterday.
"I sat down and talked with this guy. He and his producers say, 'We promise you we won't say that' [Thornton's acting career]. The very first thing they said was that.
"I don't really like sensationalism…If you look someone in the eyes and promise them something, and you don't do it, you don't get the interview. That's the way it goes."
But the explanation only goaded the audience into calling "Here comes the gravy!" referring to Billy Bob's claim that Canadian audiences "just sit there."
Ghomeshi has defended himself, saying:
"Our policy is that we don't allow anybody to tell us what we can and cannot say… Beyond that, it was this notion and the language that he used during the interview that I thought was unfortunate, that we were 'instructed' to say this and that. And I think that does raise interesting questions about ideas around how much journalism is to be controlled, especially when it comes to arts and entertainment and culture, and I think that that's a concern.
"The reality is, and I tried to explain this in the interview, these guys have only been together for two years. You just don't get the kind of national press they are getting without the incentive being something like his career past…. And I think if he could graciously accept that and say, 'Hey, I want to focus on the music, but I get that the reason we're here is because I'm a movie star that's won an Oscar.' There's not a lot of people who can say that."
Ghomeshi also said he has received a lot of support from journalists commending his dedication to his craft and his composure throughout the strange interview, saying, "Maybe it was a little Canadian to be polite, but I can live with that."
That's more than Billy Bob can say!

Also, one more thing….this shows you how phoney all those celeb interviews are here in the American Magazines. billy Bob has probably acted like a douche in every interview he's done with the U.S. press but they edit it to make him sound nice. also they probably only ask the questions they are instructed to ask. It's probably why nobody ever asks Angelina why she doesn't wear a vile of Brad Pitts blood around her neck.

um, also, just saying, if you want to be recognized as a musician, i think it would be wise to bring your instrument to the interview, or if your the singer as well as he is, then sing. show us. and don't just copy what the other band member says in your response to your music taste.

Jian never asked him one question about acting, he gave Billy Bob's bio during the intro …. would be truly bizzare and well sloppy presentation if he never mentioned that. Though after Billy Bob went Billy Bizzaro, of course he had to touch on it. I am sure Wikipedia lists everything the guy has done. And what is he embarrassed about his acting activities? And really would he even be able to interviewed on a nationally aired radio show with out those activities…Please! It was a a very uncomfortable interview though Jian was a true gentlemen and didn't let him get his goat. Jian is a Class Act through n through:)

So let me get this straight the producers promised off air that they wouldn't talk about his acting career but then asked about his acting career when he was on the air and who's the douche again?.

I think Jian did a great job with the interview and I felt the most sorry for the other members of BBT's band. They looked incredibly uncomfortable because of this douche.

Well Billy Bob can call that DJ an asshole all he wants. What we all heard/saw was Billy Bob being a huge, puckering asshole. You could see that even his bandmates thought he was acting like a gigantic tool. I thought Ghomeshi was incredibly polite and composed throughout the entire fiasco. Which is more than I would have done. I would have told Billy Bob he could suck my dick, that his music sucked, and that since he has his head so far up his own ass I didn't even need to tell him to go fuck himself because he was doing that already. Then I would have slapped on some Journey and gone outside for a well-deserved smoke.

I love that Billy acted like a douche. More celebrities should call these assholes out for making promises just to get the interview, then reneging on the promises they made once they have the star roped into the studio.
If Ghomeshi agreed not to ask those kinds of quetions, then HE is a bigger douche for not honoring his word.

What really gets to me are these "former actors", like BBT and Joaquin Pheonix who suddenly morph into musicians. They are obviously relying on their fame to carry them into their 2nd (musical) profession… And that is all they seem to have - recognition, not talent. To these people I have to say, "Don't quit your day job!!!"
And furthermore - kudos to Jian Ghomeshi for not reaching over during the interview and justifiably throttling that arrogant, self-entitled prick!!!

Ghomeshi is right. Thornton's band was only together for two years and they want media coverage? Well, then you are going to get over yourself and your gigantuan ego, Billy Bob, and acknowledge that your acting past has gotten you the interview. He is such an egotist demanding that they leave his acting career out of it - who is he to demand that? You either want the interview or you don't. Thornton could have handled himself a hell of a lot better than he did.
Let's be serious here for a moment. Most bands are together for many, many years before they even get a glimmer of a break. No Doubt was together TEN years before they got a break. And they're a very good band, with decent music.
I've heard some of Billy Bob's songs and they're not great, not even close.
Kudos to Ghomeshi for handling himself so well when dealing with this egomaniac! And Kudos to the audience for booing Billy Bob. If he is not a total douchebag he will apologize to Ghomeshi for his disgusting behaviour.

Just to clarify questions around 'preconditions': the producers and host did NOT agree to any preconditions to not mention his acting career. As Jian Ghomeshi said in the interview, he was interested in talking to Billy Bob Thornton and the band about their music as well as having them perform. That's what we were aiming to do.
