I really think this ignorant lady doesn't think this is about race. Of COURSE it is! By isolating East Asian Americans as the ONLY ones who have "difficult names" (how about Eastern Europeans? Some white people have last names that are hard to write and pronounce…..why isn't she suggesting that they change their names also???? Of course this was about race!!! Is she so quick to forget that many Irish immigrants and Eastern European immigrants were forced to change their names when they came here???? Read the article! The problem is that Asian people ARE Americanizing their names, to the point that their names are no longer consistent among all forms of identification/paperwork. They had a huge problem validating such people during the last election. When she says "change it to make it easier", she means change your official name to the Americanized version you already use on your driver's license. Yes, she could have worded it better, but she was not simply suggesting that all Asian people should change their names to Veronica Jones and Ed Patrick.

For me, it's very black and white. Be called what you want, do what you want in your own home, speak whatever language you want when you are out with friends. It's America, you're free here. Fine. HOWEVER, if you are going to live here, learn to speak the language that the majority of the country speaks. All of the morons who argue about English not being America's "official" language - sod off. Just because it's not written anywhere doesn't mean English isn't our official language. And if it was written somewhere, what language do you suppose it would be written in??? Sure as hell not in Spanish. I would never move to a non-English speaking country and expect everyone there to accommodate my language - I would learn the tongue of the land! A lot of it has to do with respect, but the bigger picture shows it's just better if you are able to speak to your neighbors. You know, so you can stay stuff like, "Call the police - there's someone in my house with a gun!" and have them not here, "Gutchfra lerfits schila - u maluance dart ju bang!"
