    4. 4

Does this mean that you're moving back to Cuba permanently Mario? Be careful - I'm pretty sure that being gay is still a criminal offense in Cuba and since you're super gay, you'd be in trouble right away!

    5. 5

      ….but will castro allow it?

    6. 6

      Good news.

I hope you're kidding. If not, have fun! We'll probably never hear from you again.

    12. 12

Have a nice trip, Mario. Stay as long as you like! No, seriously, take your time coming back.

    13. 13

So are you going to start sending money or something?

    14. 14

Fairystar-I'm sorry. That comment was meant for Sheriff.

Viva Obama! Will I be finally able to visit beautiful Cuba??? The Prez rocks!

      Awesome!!

    17. 17

      finally

Well, its about time that the US starts admitting that their embargos and vindictive foreign policy towards Cuba was somewhat "misguided" to say the least. However, an island funded by remittances does not a strong society make. Also, I feel that UrMajestyMsG may be somewhat misguided about Communism, it can work, just not with dogmatic foreign adversaries. I dont mean Communism in the Stalinist sense, but rather the proper economic and social theory that extolls workers and the proletariate resistance against big business and corrupt bourgeois government oligarchies. Perhaps if you were to pick up a history book, realize that Karl Marx is not a pop singer from 1985, and take a look around places like Flint, Youngstown, Camden, etc and see where free market capitalism has taken the country, you may think differently. Then again, maybe not, after all, commies are the scum of the earth, yes?

    19. 19

I agree, good luck to thhose who go.

    20. 20

I hope you feel good about putting more money in the Cuban government's pocket because that is where the majority of it will go. The Cuban people will never prosper because of their government. The rest of the world already trades Cuba and the people are still poor. This won't help a thing.

Re: johnnyp – May I respectfully remind you that in Cuba people get free education, including university, and free medicine. There are wonderful doctors in Cuba, many of them are in great demand from other latino countries. Get your facts straight, stop reading anti-Cuba propaganda.

    23. 23

Re: soothsayer – Maybe you should go live in Cuba.

    24. 24

Re: johnnyp – Excellent point! The end of this embargo will only benefit the corrupt government, not the people.

    25. 25

      Its RUMBA time!

Re: Cleopatra – If you like Cuba so much, leave America and go there….and stay. If Cuba is so great, why are there people fleeing it to come to America? Cuba is a great country, if you ask the right people….mainly those who live off of the corrupt governemnt and support the communist regime.

    28. 28

Fantastic news, my grandmother just came back from visiting Cuba and my family and she said it was just horrible because everyone is so poor there and we couldn't really do anything to help, thank goodness my whole family will now be able to visit people they havent seen in 40 years & live comfortably.. You rock Obama!

    29. 29

Re: gaylove – Why would you say it is bad news? After my family chose (yes, chose, it was the 1960's when Fidel said that if anyone didn't believe in him they could leave) they were only able to visit the family they left once every 10 years, but now we can send them money and have the rest of our family live semi-comfortably, thanks to Obama

    30. 30

      OH NO!
DOES THIS MEAN WHEN WE VACATION IN CUBA WE'RE GONNA HAVE TO SEE DUMBASS IGNORANT AMERICANS NECT TO US??

      SIGHS
CUBA WAS THE ONLY PLACE WHERE WE COULD VACATION, AND NO AMERICANS ALLOWED

      DAMN

    31. 31

Re: Cleopatra – I don't deny that the education in Cuba is free, but it is full of propaganda and sets up Fidel/Raul as saviors. You don't exactly get to voice your opinion against the government during this "free" education. As for their health care, the services may be free but you have to bring your supplies and linens because the government does such a bang-up job of taking care of its people. By the way, all these facts are straight from my relatives living there. What about yours?

    32. 32

this news brings me to tears. I know my husband and in-laws would be excited once I tell them the news. Many of us take for granted the freedom that we have. My MIL's father recently passes away and she could not go home and bury her father and be there for her mother because of the previous law.
      VIVA OBAMA!!

    33. 33

Re: johnnyp – I lived in Cuba for three years, working for a Canadian travel agency. I speak Spanish fluently. I had to be hospitalized once suffering from a case of dehydration. I was treated like royalty, with a smile, I did not have to bring my own towels or anything like you mention. After 5 days I was released and my bill came to a big total of ZERO. As a Canadian I thought I would have to pay, no Sir, it was gratis even for me and I have only good things to say about the good care I received. Could the 50 million Americans without any protection at all if they become ill could these poor people say the same about the care they would receive in the US ? Think about it, I'm sure you don't have an answer to that. I rest my case.

    34. 34

Re: Cleopatra – You're Canadian. You are not treated like a native Cuban when you are in Cuba.. Native Cubans can't go to certain beaches because they are just for tourists. They can't enter certain hotels unless they work there. I have no doubt that as a Canadian promoting travel to Cuba you were treated as royalty. The Cuban government is not stupid. They want foreigners to have a great time and spread the word to invest money into their dying economy. Too bad it's the native Cubans who suffer and don't reap the rewards.

Cuba is a great country and Cuban ppl are awesome people. Artists and musicians in that country train for the same length of time as doctors in this country.
How long before Cuba's shore's are once again ownd by wealthy American interests.
      Sad. Who likes sharing

Better to let Cuban nationals have the right to travel

    37. 37

OMG im so happy! Obama is doing everything he can to help Cuba! Thats so great! Id much rather he think about how the people in Cuba are going to be helped then worrying about the people in Michigan. F michigan, who needs them. We have to help Cuba. Thanks Obama!

The tourist money will go prop up the Communist government.
      .
The people will continue to live in poverty, getting $15 a month and ration cards to half-empty stores. They will continue to work all day to try to afford a meal of rice and beans. Visit therealcuba and see the conditions the Cuban people live under. People get in makeshift rafts and die trying to get out of that worker's paradise. They want to come HERE for FREEDOM and OPPORTUNITY.
      .
Obama has spent his life working alongside Marxists, Maoists, and other radicals who hope to bring Cuba-like Communism to the U.S.
      .
We have a very sad fate in store unless the American people wake up and start resisting the grab of money and power the U.S. government is making.

I'm no historian, but back when Cuba was an open vacation party central and being turned into a tacky Vegas II , a lot of people (many who were connected) who weren't Cubans were making piles of money, and most of it was leaving the country, with very little of it going to Cubans except as hired help with tips. Fidel mirrored a lot of average, idealistic but decent and proud Cubans who weren't happy with this Vegas vision foreign ownership of their beautiful country. When he took over, a lot of foreign folks were pissed at losing their clubs and hotels to nationalization and wanted their investment back. Some (very few) of these elite were Cubans. Some Cubans disagreed with Fidel's vision, and had just started to enjoy their raised standard of living. A lot of those, and then many ordinary Cubans came to the States when the Cuban economy slumped again with the exit of the partying foreignors along with the embargo. Cuba aligned itself politically with that other powerful cold war country, Russia, to keep this influence at bay, because Cuba was small and had little influence otherwise to keep Vegas II from happening. The unacceptable soviet missiles setting up in Cuba was the eventual result, which wasn't good at all and one of the most frightening high noons of the cold war; but Cubans kept their Cuba free of this influence. Many political ideagogues saw Fidel as a saviour.

Fidel is old and in shaky health, and his brother is making moves to open Cuba up to the rest of the world. They want to raise the standard of living for the Cuban people, who were the most affected by all of the history. This opening up will bring democracy and an improved standard of living to Cuba more quickly than any stand off ever could. It's a new time, and it's a bit like a piece of the Berlin wall coming down. Now the poor Cubans can jump on the treadmill, good or bad, like the rest of us. Obama has made an inclusive, rather than excluding move here. Cubans are in for major culture shock, and probably major inflation. This was bound to happen eventually.

It's claimed that the 47 year old embargo now costs the U.S. more than it costs Cuba. The best thing I've read on this (google it) is from 'Dollars and Sense, Real World Economics, The Costs of the Embargo, by Margot Pepper.' It's an interesting and enlightening read.

    45. 45

Re: @v@ – BRAVO and thank you for your sensible and true comments. Fidel Castro and Che Guevara brought freedom to the people of Cuba. It is because of the US embargo that the Cubans have been suffering all those years. President Obama is very courageous and I hope he will go even further politically to lift the embargo completely.

    46. 46

From one Commie (Fidel) to another (Barry HUSSEIN Obama). I hope you visit Cuba, Perez. The Commies just love the gays. And contrary to some of the left wing loons on this site Communism does not work. Every major city that wallows in poverty has been run by Democrats. Democrats have done everything they can since the 60s to expand the welfare roles and therefore increase the poverty level. Welfare programs have been a cancer on this nation. Welfare has created generations of lazy good for nothings who are on the dole. It is passed from generation to generation.

Re: Cleopatra – It was a crappy situation. A lot of people didn't deserve to lose their $hirts when they got kicked out of Cuba, either. Aligning Cuba with the Soviets at that time could have started WWIII. Very scary to have those pointed at North America and within firing distance, and not OK at all, considering the height of the U.S./Soviet cold war rhetoric at that time. OOoooh, an a-ha moment. Medveded's and Putin's current objections to defence shields in neighbouring countries around Russia must invoke the same feelings in them as Americans felt when Cuban missile silos were becoming a reality and possibly pointing at them. Anyway, I support semi-factual history, rather than either side. Living here, in the 60's, I frankly would have supported that embargo, then. No missiles pointed at my head, thank you very much.

    49. 49

Well we are heading to communism anyways..

    50. 50

Well, after 40 yrs, this was long overdue. Going to Cuba if you are a Cuban American should of been allowed years ago! It's about time this issue was addressed!

Cleopatra wrote, "Fidel Castro and Che Guevara brought freedom to the people of Cuba."
      .
No, they didn't. They stole all the private property, shot anyone who fought back, and made the people the slaves of the state. There is no freedom in Cuba. There is oppression and poverty for all except the oppressing class and the tourists.

    52. 52

Re: @v@ – Why the double standard ? In the eary 60's when Americans found out there might be missiles pointed at them, there were already missiles pointed at the USSR from Turkey. Part of the agreement between Kennedy and Khrouchtchev was that the missiles would be dismantled in Cuba and the missiles in Turkey as well. Why would the Russians not have the right to be worried too if missiles were pointed at them ? Why only the Americans have the right to threaten other countries ?

    53. 53

Re: CaraC – Fidel Castro and Che Guevarra gave the freedom to the people of Cuba who were slaves to the corrupt regime of Battista, didn't you know that ? The people who were shot were counter-revolutionaries, of course they wanted things to stay the way they were. 90% of the Cubans lived in poverty, not allowed on their own beaches. The Americans were supporting the corrupt regime then, and punished the Cubans with the embargo. The Americans can be cruel, don't believe the propaganda.

    54. CaraC says – reply to this

      54

Cleopatra, there is no freedom in Cuba. There is poverty and oppression and no relief. People put together makeshift boats and RISK DEATH trying to escape from the slavery to the state available in Cuba. No one has to risk death fleeing from freedom.
      .
Castro and Che are mass murderers who robbed people of their home and life's savings in order to grab power and stay in control. People who want freedom are beaten, jailed, or shot.
      .
Che said, "To send men to the firing squad, judicial proof is unnecessary. These procedures are an archaic bourgeois detail. This is a revolution! And a revolutionary must become a cold killing machine motivated by pure hate." Is this what you admire?
      .
Communism is EVIL. It is slavery to the state. Anyone who advocates Communism is advocating SLAVERY. Please educate yourself.
      .
Communism does not uplift the poor. It does not make things "fair." It oppresses people in a system that makes them slaves of the state "in the name of the people." It is a system that has killed 100 million people and has spread poverty, injustice, brutality, and oppression wherever it takes hold.

    55. 55

Re: CaraC – Nobody has been enslaved or died or lived in abject poverty because of CAPITALISM, OF COURSE NOT IN YOUR BOOK OF PROPAGANDA. How about the 50 million Americans who cannot get to see a doctor because they can't affort it and have no insurance at all ? Waiting for an answer which will never come, because there is no decent answer to that question. Look in your own backyard before writing false statements about Cuba of which you know nothing. Are you writing on behalf of the republican party ?

Re: Cleopatra – No double standard; you're misreading me. Of course the Russians have the right to feel threatened. I mentioned it. I didn't say 'why do only Americans have the right to threaten other countries.' You did. I am apolitical. I analyze history unfolding. As a North American, though, I did state that I would have been uncomfortable with missiles pointed at me from Cuba, and particularly because that ratcheted tensions up considerably, and tempted that point of no return. One bad thing doesn't justify another, or two wrongs don't make a right. I'm not going to say, oh, tit for tat, even if that's the case. Better that neither existed, obviously.
