America, meet your First Dog - Bo!
So adorable!!!!
Bo is a 6-month-old Portuguese Water Dog who was gifted to the Obamas by Senator Ted Kennedy, an avid fan of the PWD breed.
Kennedy had been pressuring the First Family to adopt a Portuguese Water Dog for months now and the Senator decided to go ahead and "surprise" the Obamas with Bo!
The breed is known for being an excellent companion and a high-spirited, loving dog with a hypoallergenic coat, a perfect match for Malia Obama, who suffers from allergies.
Reports say Malia and Sasha decided on the name Bo because the girls' cousins have a cat with the same name and Michelle Obama's father was nicknamed Diddley, after blues legend Bo Diddley.
Knowing that some supporters of animal rescue efforts will be disappointed in the Obamas' choice not to adopt a new pup from a shelter, the family has decided to make a generous donation to the D.C. Humane Society!

Do you run corrections? 'Cause this isn't true. The dog was re-homed to the Obamas, through Kennedy, after someone returned it to the breeder. So not a shelter dog, but still a rescue.

Mostly likely, around the play area that was built just outside of the Oval Office (again, for lots of photo ops…) Of course, after that, the dog will mostly be walked by the White House staff. I mean, how often have we seen Sasha and Malia in the "family" vegetable garden?
donating and rescuing are 2 completely different things……it's a shame the first family of our country could not set an example and rescue a dog, if not more…….

This is terrible. I can’t believe that they BOUGHT a dog from a Dog breeder! I know that the dog was returned to the kennel where it was bred, but this is still supporting that man to have his dogs bred. I don’t understand why the Obamas don’t understand how many animals are getting euthanized in shelters every day here in the United States because of people breeding. The whole situation makes me so mad. I voted for Obama and I am really mad. Animals are my passion in life and I run an animal rescue. Everyday I have to grieve over animals being put to sleep because they have no where to go and the shelters are full. I hate the fact that we as Americans live our lives in excess and think its okay to throw away animals when we don’t want them anymore. I am ashamed that our president has done this. It makes me think a lot less of him.
I understand that it was a ‘gift’ but this still promotes that man’s kennel and people to want dogs from breeders.
Since they took that dog then 2 dogs at a shelter died. -The one that they could have taken and now has no where to go, and the one that could have gone in the cage the potential adopted one was occupying.
People don’t realize how bad the pet overpopulation really is. The shelter in the town I live in gets over 800+ animals a MONTH. Purebred and not purebred. There is not enough room for all the ones people buy to have homes and for all the shelter ones to have homes. What keeps happening is people just turn their head and thousands of animals a day get euthanized for ’space’. And a lot of places that euthanize animals don’t even do it humanely since the people at the shelters don’t care. They are just doing a job like our local trash men who clean up the trash that us as Americans throw away.

I live near Lancaster County in PA where some of the worst puppy mills are and those ignorant Amish people see nothing wrong w/ what they're doing. I suggest locking them in crates where they can't stand up or even move around and the woman should have to give birth in them - having twins, triplets??? even fucken better!!!!! Also, the canadian seal slaughter is even worse and I think those horrible excuses for people should be cracked over their heads with clubs and bats and see how they enjoy the torture. problem is minority always rules over majority………and it's complete bullshit

Perez, The Obama's met the dog a few months back and Ted is only presenting the dog because his dogs are from the same kennel. The dog was also a return, bought and then returned to the kennel. He will arrive on Tuesday. Try reading CNN, and stick to the celebs.

GoldFishie you should really get your facts straight before going off on breeders…REPUTABLE breeders don't have their dogs end up in shelters, they have strict contracts that require the dogs to come back to them if the owners can't keep them. You PETA people and supporters are terrorists, and don't understand what it means to be a reputable purebred breeder of healthy animals, who never see the inside of a shelter! Hurray for the purebred white house dog!!!!!

I don't like the idea of animals being put down anymore than the next person. But it is not as horrific as people make it out to be. It is a completely painless procedure and half of them would probably be happier that way then cramped up in a smelly cage for months, years…..Obama is still an a$$hole though.

Ummm, yeah he was re-homed from a previous owner who had named him Charlie. He was presented by the Kennedy's on behalf of the kennel. So the Kennedys were just the middle man. There are laws against the president receiving gifts.

That may be true about breeders where you come from, but where I come from it is not. I run an animal rescue so I deal with this everyday, and I know my 'facts'. The reason why it is bad is because this is not about just this one dog, but the example Obama could have set for the entire country to adopt rather than buy. It is just sad when thousands of animals a day are killed because they have no where to go. -And why do breeders really breed except for the money? No reason. If they really loved the breed they would rescue the breed instead of clogging up our shelters, rescues, and dogs getting killed on our roadways.

God Perez, I thought you would've at LEAST ripped all the information off of TMZ on this one, but nope, and you got it wrong on your own! Bo IS an adopted dog and is NOT a gift from the Kennedy's. Bo came from a shelter for water dogs in Texas. They also breed them there as well and Bo was bought by someone in Texas but then they returned him because they could not keep him. Because presidents cannot accept gifts (Hello Nixon and the Checkers incident?), the Obamas paid a "rehoming" fee for him and the Kennedys are presenting the Obamas with the dog on behalf of the shelter. The Kennedy's have bought/adopted 3 water dogs from the same shelter and the president's dog is actually from the same lineage as theirs.

This was reported everywhere yesterday!!! You are sooo slow these days. This is a rescued dog, the previous owners did not want it any longer as they could not deal with the high spirtedness of the animal. Obama said months ago that they were looking at the Water Dog as a pet because of the allergies. At least this one needed a good home and they did not purchase it adn they are still making a donation to the shelter to help keep other dogs cared for longer.

The dog did not come from a 'shelter or rescue' in ANY way. The person was a breeder. He supposedly sold the dog to someone else, then they brought it back to the breeder, then Kennedy paid for it and 'rehomed' it to Obama.
The dog is not a rescue and does not support homeless animals at all. The dogs life was not in jeopardy, and the breeder probably would have used it for breeding if Kennedy didn't buy it.
The whole situation just sucks and is a terrible example for the country.

While I agree it is a personal decision, it's a shame more people cannot rescue animals from the horrible situations they are in or before they get into them. Humanely euthanizing an animal is A-ok in my book and I do believe more should be put down being that they are living in these horrid conditions - problem is, not all of these animals are being humanely euthanized - (see #51). Another problem is, people won't stop breeding and do so for the pesos. I have 3 pit bulls, all were "saved" - 2 litter mates would've been sold off to God knows who or sent to a pound and my newest addition came from a tree. Yes, my friends, a 5 month old puppy, tied to a tree. this past winter, the other dog that was tied to the tree with him died because of the freezing temps. To bad Obama couldn't find dogs in situations similar to mine were and save them from a terrible future…….

Yeah…he said he wanted to find a shelter dog to adopt….but shit happens sometimes. They settled on this particular breed of dog due to the younger Obama girl's allergies. It's hard to find a specific breed in a shelter. He got one from a kennel who was returned. Again, I'll say….so what?

If it were not for responsible breeders, like me, this dog might not be here today. So while I am all for rescues, I also believe there is a place for responsible, ethical breeders. And Obama could have found a shelter dog easily, but he chose this breed because of it's elite, rare status.

Please, my family breeds AKC registered champion show dogs and are responsible about it. Do NOT discredit responsible breeders by lumping them in with the trash puppy mills. We breed limited amounts of litters, research the owners to make sure the homes are good homes, provide the best care while they're in our homes and don't just sell puppies in the newspaper or at puppy stores. The breeder they got the dog from is the same breeder that the Kennedy's go to, so I'm assuming it's not exactly some lowly disgusting puppy mill breeder. This is very offensive to me as RESPONSIBLE breeders should not be held accountable for the remarks you were making. Not all breeders, breed to make a profit. Most want the legacy of theirs dogs to go on, they want to create beautiful show dogs. That's not wrong.

At least this dog was taken back by the breeder (someone didn't want it which would make it a HOMELESS dog) and the breeder found another suitable family for it. Ok, so they made a big deal on the view today because michelle obama wore a sweater to meet the queen. It is being reported that she is making a statement by example of not wearing expensive designer clothing. Not to mention that these dogs are quite high strung and super energetic, not a first pet best bet. They could have led by example and adopted an older mixed breed from a shelter but NO they dropped the ball and will need a dog whisperer to teach Bo to pick it up.

You may be a 'good' breeder, but there is no way in the world you can make 100% sure that your animals actually get back to you if someone doesn't want them. AND there is no way you can make sure that people don't buy your dogs and then either call themselves 'dog breeders' or make more mutt puppies that end up in shelters.
I know there is no way you can make sure you get 100% of the animals back because the same thing is true with me. I get all of my rescue animals microchipped, people have to fill out applications, and sign a contract saying that if they didn't want the animal then they are legally obligated to bring it back to me. Despite all this there are still people who dump them.
I noticed you didn't say what breed of dog you breed.. Is this because it is a breed that is already flooding our shelters already and thousands are getting put down??
