From Slumdog to the Slums

It's nice to see people giving back to those left fortunate. And the producers of the hit flick Slumdog Millionare are doing just that. FINALLY!

The filmmakers of the Oscar-winning movie have announced that they will be donating money to help the children living in the Mumbai slums.

In fact, they'll be donating £500,000. That's close to $1 million, in order to create a five-year program which will provide healthcare and education for kids.

They'll be doing this with the help of the international children development organization, Plan.

The movie's director, Danny Boyle, released a statement saying "Having benefited so much from the hospitality of the people of Mumbai it is only right that some of the success of the movie be ploughed back into the city in areas where it is needed most and where it can make a real difference to some lives."

We couldn't agree more.

And aside from the money, a trust has also been created to look after two child stars of the film and help ensure they get an education and proper housing.

best thing he could have done. If he give the money to the family, like the 5.000 Dollars, thy will just spend it on drinks. Look after the kids, Danny!!!

im pretty sure she already rules it!

    11. 11

      ITS ABOUT DAMN TIME!!!!

    12. 12

Done only after a lot of shame. But, good for them.

    13. 13

Just because someone makes a successful movie does not mean they have to save the region in which it was made. What's happening? We are socializing ourselves!! WTF? If I make a million bucks I don't deserve to keep it? I have to give it away? Pleeeeeeeeeeeze. Wake up people.

I think its great that the producers are doing this for the children in the slums of Mumbai, but it shows something about American society. People were pushing so hard about how the films producers should do something for the slums and the child actors, etc. etc., but if a film is made where they show children living in poverty in America there is no push to help them. People just say things like "I hope this film shows what conditions these children are living in and gets people motivated to help."

    15. 15

I think they are going above and beyond the call of duty. That's fantastic and they should be applauded.
      .
That said, they have already done a lot for the kids who appeared in the movie. Don't act like they are a-holes for not cutting their wrists and bleeding in the streets for these people.

    16. 16

yeah….let's help the other countries before we help ourselves…….."America - saving one country at a time (except ourselves)"

How come the people of Kazakstan did not see a red cent when Borat was being filmed. The movie made a ton of money around the world but I don't think there was any outcry there about the slums the people and just as sadly, the children, were living in? Just asking!

    18. 18

with all the $Msss made off that film they could certainly afford to give MORE

    19. 19

the trust is only granted to the children when they turn 18 and have finished their education up to that point. Apparently the producers had wired money to the families initially for a new apartment but the shady "broker" took off with the funds. Boyle was quoted saying that just throwing cash to the kids and families wouldn't help, that they wanted to invest in the future. I am glad they found a responsible and productive way of doing so!

Re: Erin27 – they did set up a fund for the kids educations, but not homes. Currently both kids are still in the slums living in a 'new' shack which was built with used tin materials and is worth the us dollar equal of $75

    21. 21

This is great and more powerful, rich people should follow suit.

    22. 22

Re: CHA – took me a while to read that second comment, wow, you are deep today

    23. 23

I don't see you donating your money to charities so stop being such a hypocrite, they've already set up an eduction fund for the kids and now they're using their well earned cash to help others.
And how is 500,000 close to a million? It's 1/2 that you idiot!

    24. 24

      FABULOUS!!!

    25. 25

They were shamed into giving. It was only after it came out how little the kids were paid to be in the movie and that they had returned to the slums that they did anything. As much money that the movie made, it's little enough for them to do.

Re: Blobbyman – Its 500,000 pounds love which the American dollar is worth about only half of… so yeah.. its close to a cool mil :)

    27. 27

Slumdog grossed: $326,990,237 worldwide and is still bringing in cash with DVD sales and rentals NOT included in this number! The total production budget was $15 million. Is that the best they can do?

Re: limbolegs – you are truly fucking stupid.

Re: RobPnMeShouldB – What the fuck are you talking about, it's not an American film.

      Re: limbolegs – someone's a Republican.

    31. 31

Awe, I'm glad to hear what they're doing! It's great. :)
I find the youngest 'Jamal' actor kid, wayy too fucking adorable!

    32. 32

Perez, not that I expect you to know current exchange rates, but wherever you got your info is wrong. At current rates, 500,000 GBP is worth about 740,000 USD, not about a million. That was two years ago. Right now, the pound is quite weak against the dollar, but it is getting better than it was at Christmas (where it was down to 1.3!). Ah, arbitrage!

    33. 33

Those kids deserve it, they made the movie! Let's hope the money goes to the slumdogs, and not the gangsters!

    34. 34

I am all for helping people, but when do we ever hear about people doing that for kids over here in America who don't have access to medical care. I am so sick of people going to other countries to help them or adopt children when there are children over here who are suffering as well. You have people like Angelina and Madonna who are so quick to jump on a plane and adopt a child from a foreign country while they forget about the thousands of children in America who are orphans. They build schools in foreign countries while our children grow dumber by the minute. This is ridiculus.

    35. 35

      yaaayyyy for the kids!

Re: God's Property – It's. Not. An. American. Film. JESUS.

    37. 37

Re: sleezy*e – That's the trouble with the yanks - because its a hugely successful film they automatically assume its been made by Americans - even though the yanks weren't even interested in distributingit originally… then it became a huge success - and they couldn't wait to jump on the bandwagon..

    38. 38

Re: cattsa – I know, apparently we "yanks" think every popular movie ever made is American.

Ugh, ignorant Americans always making me look bad.

    39. 39

      Good stuff!!
