Whoopi Goes To Extreme Measures

Who knew Whoopi Goldberg was so afraid of flying?

Last month she couldn't even get on a plane. She had to take a bus cross country to get to California, where The View was filming for a week.

During a recent trip to London a week and some change ago, Goldberg was so frightened she needed medical help.

Whoopi had to fly overseas for the musical version of her hit film, Sister Act, which starts previews next month and she is producing.

But aside from going on a private jet, she also needed a doctor to accompany her. And the doc was nearby the entire time with some syringes and sedatives in case she had a panic attack.

Scary!

She even had to prepare for the flight through a program where she had to sit down with a psychologist and a pilot.

Whoopi says about that flight, "I had a guy with me, but I didn't need it. I'm kinda proud." She adds that now "I'm going to fly to the West Coast to surprise my daughter."

Way to go, gurl. Conquer those fears!

Good for her! That kinda anxiety is so debilitating, glad she's getting over it.

    5. 5

that would be so ironic if that flight to visit her daughter happens to crash

    6. 6

i saw her on a tv interview once and she said the reason she doesnt fly is because the guy next to her died! then she thought he fell asleep on her arm but he wouldnt wake up because he was dead! its true, look it up

    7. 7

hey i got a Whoppi Goldberg hair in my Domino pizza. Is she still working there?

    8. 8

AWE, I FEEL BAD FOR HER. I HATE FLYING TOO.

when she was on paul ogrady she said it was because when she was young she saw two planes collide in the air above where she lived but she went on some course and they said it isnt physically possible for modern aeroplanes to do that

    11. 11

Well, she did say on the View that she saw two planes collide mid-air in the 70s, so I guess that traumatizes a person pretty badly….

    12. 12

What a disgusting, over indulged drama queen this woman is. And that face, I want to be sick just looking at it. Big deal, she sat on an airplane, last week I may add!!!!!

    13. 13

She took a Bus to CA? Hasn't she ever heard of a Train?

She said on The View a few weeks ago that she witnessed a plane crash, hence her fear.

    20. 20

OK, this was news over 2 weeks ago. What the fuck is going on with this site? Perez needs to get his head out of Mika and Lady Gaga's asses, and get back to blogging. I am almost through with this site…. seriously.

The reason she has such a fear of flying is because she witnessed the PSA airplane crash here in San Diego in 1978. A small cessna plane crashed into the PSA as it was coming in to land at Lindbergh Field. The small plane practically dissintegrated and the PSA plane crashed into a residential neighborhood killing everyone on the plane and several people on the ground. If you witnessed that, you might never want to fly either.

Being someone who suffers from a panic disorder much like this, I can say that it is very inspiring to see someone conquer their fears like this. Someone to look up to and to show everyone else that they can also achieve these things that most people consider everyday no-big-deal activities. I always joke with my boyfriend that the only way he would get me on a plane was if i had a therapist with me. Now, I know, for the right price I probably can lol. I envy her courage

Such a bag of hot gas as Whoopi could cross the Atlantic on a sailboat with no more than beans to fill the sails.

I saw her on 'The View' With Virgin Atlantic's flying without fear program… looked pretty awesome, the Virgin hostie was HOT, but then they all seem to be every time I fly with them… Gonna book again soon!!
      Good for you dear! x

    28. 28

Can't blame her, especially with the smaller planes. Nice job, Whoopi!

    29. 29

      She is psychotic.

    30. 30

      Deleting comments again Perez?

    31. 31

I just want to know why she doesn't have any eyebrows?? LOL

    32. 32

It'll really suck if she finally gets over her fear only to crash. Kinda like Alanis' song "Isn't it ironic!"

    33. 33

She is afraid of flying because someone died next to her on an international flight years ago and she's been traumatized ever since! Good for her to get over her fear!

    34. 34

I can sympathize with Whoopi…I am terrified of flying. I lived in a small village in Alaska, and, literally, flew in a small six-seater plane to get to school everyday, no joke. My fear of flying didn't start, until about five years ago. I have flown a lot because I lived in Alaska, but since moving down south, I am trying not to fly at all. It is the absolute worse fear, can't breath, cold sweats…I know it sounds crazy.

    35. 35

Yes, she does take the bus, but it's her own RV bus, and I'm sure it's a doozey, fixed up with all the bells and whistles! Nevertheless, I'm proud of Whoopi too. It was a brave thing for her to do to try to overcome her fear of flying. I watched The View the day they all were trying to help her go through the training to overcome the fear. She said that the reason she had the fear is that she once was flying and saw two planes crash together in mid-air. I guess that would give me "pause" to fly again too.

iX3Perez: I think your comment is horrible. Why are you so flip about something so awful?

    37. 37

Why don't she just Fly Out on her BROOM?

    38. 38

Poor Poor Whoopi, another VICTIM of RACISM this has to end, aren't we all created equal?

    39. mEEEE says – reply to this

      39

I grew up as a kid in the 80's and it seemed like everytime you turned on the TV, either a plane had crashed or it had been highjacked. Although it probably was just all continuous coverage of disasters like the Lockerbie accident, to this day I cannot board a plane. I drove all the way to Disney World from Illinois a few years ago!

    40. 40

      OK

    41. 41

way to go whoopi! i'm so with her on this. i suffer from panick attacks, and it's such a real thing. i've been wanting to travel to europe for quite some time, and i always joked that the only way i would was if i had a psychiatrist with me. haha! now, i know, you can!

    42. 42

Hey! I can relate girlfriend! I use to fly in my younger years, then I had this horrible flight with my 5 month old son and I swore to the Great Spirit that if I safely got my feet back on the ground I would never get up in a "metal bird" ever again.

My friend in Laguna Beach begs me all the time to come out there. I proud of ya Whoop! A step towards a new kind of freedom! I wonder if I wil ever get up that kind of strength to make it out to my friend. I would need a main line anxiety control! lolololol
