Quote of the Day

"I believe that computers have taken over the world. I believe that they have in many ways ruined our children. I believe that kids used to love to go out and play. I believe that social graces are gone because manners are gone because all people do is sit around and text. I think it's obnoxious."
- Stevie Nicks tells the Associated Press

i love computers!
"These kids today." Your age is showing Stevie. Now go and send a message by carrier pigeon.
sadly it's very true
Gold Dust Coke-Head Hagatha speaketh - - - puh - leeez
It's a bit true, though. But I guess that's how it is now. (btw, I'm 16, not some disapproving 90 year old)
There is no arguing here… she is correct.
There is no arguing here… she is correct. But it is not just the youth
My dad used to say the same thing about my generation, only not about computers….but "Rock 'n Roll" music. LOL I was born in '59
I appreciate her truth.
she is so right!!
I agree and I'm 30. I played outside when I was a kid, I didn't sit in front of the tv and we didn't have a computer. It's so sad to see these kids today, they have no idea how to survive without all the gadgets that are available now.
yes kids you should do mountains of blow like stevie…
I'm with ya, sister! Thanks, Perez… two great quotes in the past few days from the independent and bold Goddess that is Stevie Nicks.
(the other one was about Lindsay Lohan playing her in a movie… as fucking if!)
I believe Stevie's quote was: "Over my dead body."
And like maybe doin 2 pounds of coke a day and burnin out your nasal passage is better for you?
Hey Stevie- that's so 20th century, baby. Get on board, Stevie- open your mind - that's what "the hippies" were all about.
Although computers are definitely fun, she's right.
I think…she's totally right!!
I love it…stevie is right on target!
And she's right, too, but someone else here said it as well - it ain't just the kids! There's a lot of glazed eyes morons out there watching the words on the screen while the grass, plants, trees, mountains, birds, bugs, wind, rain, stars, planets and TIME itself just passes them by…
Here's a txt message for your deathbed:
2BADyrLFsucked.
She has a certain point.
SHE DOES HAVE A POINT THO.. B4 PUTERS THERE WAS NO SUCH THING AS ONLINE SEX PORN ADDICTION. THEN AGAIN IT KEPT ALL THE PEDOPHILES AT HOME INSTEAD OF THE SCHOOL YARD. LMAO!
To support you
STEVIE NICKS…
WHO GIVES A FUCK????
I certainly dont care about your feeling on anything.
I agree with Stevie Nicks… Technology will become humanity's demise… mark my words… 2012 just around the corner.
There's a book I read:
The Dumbest Generation: How the Digital Age Stupefies Young Americans and Jeopardizes Our Future(Or, Don't Trust Anyone Under 30)
Says the same thing, but in great great detail!
Re: misterpibb –
good God, you actually believe the world will end in 2012?
I agree with Stevie. Look at the childhood obesity epidemic. Kids don't play outside anymore, they sit in front of the computer, or play video games. People text while driving. You can't even grocery shop without some idiot talking on the cell phone down each aisle. It's crazy.
Sad but true. LOL
I agree,
She's absolutely right. People don't go out to socialize anymore, because you have facebook or twitter. And people have absolutely no manners anymore, nobody says thank you and please anymore. It's sad. All you see people doing is talking on the phone and messaging or twittering, anywhere they go.
I tend to agree with Stevie. You know what is annoying? Seeing someone in a checkout line at a store, on the phone, ignoring the cashier. I'm sorry, but get off the phone and show some respect towards another person doing their job. I don't know why, but that really shows disrespect towards another human being.
I also agree about kids not wanting to play outside as much due to the video games. However, it is up to the parent to show responsibility and make sure their kids are getting outside to play. I have 3 kids…they are each allowed one hour on the weekends. I don't allow it during the school week at all! You really have to take control in that area or you will end up with obese kids not getting enough exercise.
it was not mentioned how vulgar people can be at their computer, using terrible language, swear words, the incessant name-calling (name-calling is the lowest form of communication). All this behing the anonymity of your computer. Maybe it is good for one thing: People are very angry these days and they can ventilate their anger and hate. But it shouldn't go too far, it may be dangerous in the end to encourage such hate, racism, vulgarity.
Right on Stevie!
Agreed. People would rather sit in front of a computer chatting with people they'll never see instead of having face to face contact. I've had roommates like that.
That is why people is soo fat.
I know of her but i'm not exactly sure who she is which might be a little ignorant of me but oh well.
Anyway i think she's completely right, when i was litle (i'm a teenager) i used to be out all the time and there was always kids on my street and if you look outside now there is nobody at all! Not a single person which i think is a terrible shame.
I don't think mobile phones, the tv and computers are necessarily a bad thing though because you get information from them and phones especially can help you.
However i do think people spend a lot of their time on computers etc because they've been brought up in a non-creative environment and so they can't think of anything creative to do so they just sit and watch the tv or something.
I think readings a great thing, why don't people read more? I read all the time and in my english lessons at school you can tell how much reading helps you actually talk, like pronouncing words because barely anyone can pronounce a lot of easy words correctly and when i've asked these people they've always said they don't read.
And in a reply to someone elses comment, no, not many people have manners and it's damn right annoying! It's not hard to say please or thank you and it means a lot!
There finished
True.
she is so right.
I think Stevie is just anti-technology, but it does seem like a generation thing. She thinks MySpace is evil. I'm not old, but I am old enough to remember how life was before the Internet, cell phones, and numerous other technology. Even though I couldn't live without my internet or cell phone now (well, I probably could, but I would probably be frustrated without them), I do understand what she means by rudeness. People have always been rude–I think there's no escaping that–but technology has just seemed to make society even more rude. You got people bitching at each other on these very boards behind a computer (and I plead guilty), saying things to each other they would never say to each others' faces, and you got people walking around with a phone permanently planted in their ear everywhere you go. Another thing Stevie has said in an interview once is that technology killed the music industry. On the plus side, I can listen to practically any song I want now with a click of a button. Negative side: no one hardly buys CDs anymore, and all the good CD stores have either closed or have reduced their inventory. Thank goodness for independent stores.
MMMMMMMMM K! What else is new? I think people know this already!
Sad, but true.
i text and use computers….and i agree with her.
i miss the old days.
he's 100% correct. the internet is pretty awesome though. and i love my cellphone. just the other day i was wondering how people lived without them. they're such a convenience.
She's right.
Very true
The internet & computers are fantastic, but she's telling the TRUTH. People are logged on too much, Twitter is stupid (when used by individuals), and people are ruder to each other than we've been in recorded memory. It's easy to be disrespectful when you're arguing with a screen, instead of in person, and slowly warps us into a less civil society. The internet hasn't bridged the communication gap, it's created more space. Want to know how I feel about my life? Go to my myspace, pshhh.
I believe Stevie Nicks is a winey twat.
Re: LadiKati – Maybe if you use your computer and Google Stevie Nicks you'll learn that she's a she not a he.
I agree with her to a certain degree, but ones parents is what it all boils down to in my opinion. My kids can play videogames for a limited amount of time, same goes for tv. But Ill be damned if they`re going to sit in front of those things all day. Its all about balance. And taking the time to teach and show them different things, alot of parents just let them do what they please as long as they are out of the way.. Which is a shame.
Parents should spend alot of time out of the house with theire kids and teach them to be polite, computers arent designed to raise children.
On a closing note, Steve is still a godess
very well said, but god i love them and it is what put food and weed on my mouth
Re: kukita – (i sell them)
LUV LUV LUV HER!!!!
As much as I love the internet I do agree. When I was a kid I was always outside with my friends, I was such a tomboy lol.
I have to say I agree with her for the most part. Technology is wonderful, I love surfing the web, etc. BUT..There is a lack of intimacy that has been created with all this technology. People get too caught up with their online "image", and fantasy based relationships. There is nothing that replaces real, in person interaction and experiences. It's pretty sad, really.
Nicks giving opinion on children when she has NONE warrants a common response to celebs, "Please just shut your mouth and talk about what you know -selfishness, the destruction of drugs, all the mistakes you've made, etc…."
…but being stoned and drunk all the time is somehow the way to achieve perfect sociabilty?
I believe she is very wise in her older years and she is absolutely 100% correct.
I couldn't agree more.
100 % spot on Stevie!
Lmao , Stevie rocks,
I love computers too but she's got a great point !
It used to just be TV but now it's everything , if the electricity goes out kids don't know what the hell to do with themselves lol
Heaven forbid anyone should ever go outside and talk to actual people lol
I think she is absolutely correct! I don't think there is much we can do about it though.
Please, somebody tell me what it is about these "great outdoors" that is just so fucking spectacular?
Hell, they only went out to play because there was nothing better to do.
And the rudest people I come across are actually people who grew up without this stuff. The fucking baby-boomers.
oh , go have an affair with a band mate, you old crank!
I believe that I could care less what Stevie Nicks says - don't speak sweety, just sing!
It's true. I'm 18 and as a kid I'd always go outside and play. But now I see my cousins who are between 5 and 12 and they're always inside watching tv and going on computers. They even have their own phones, which is ridiculous.
She's right, however, I wish texting and emailing had been around when I was a kid. You wanted to wait for a call? You sat by the phone and waited for it! None of this voice mail or call waiting! Not only did you have to wait for it, you couldn't be on the phone - you'd get a busy signal. Gawd, I'm old!
And everytime someone on this message board spouts off with rude and stupid remarks it proves her point. Easy to be an asshole when you're anonymous.
I find it ironic that Perez seems to praise this quotation, yet a few scrolls down we see that he has joined Twitter. A little contradictory and makes me question how seriously I can take him.
Finally someone with sense.
Throughout history, the previous generation has always shit upon the next.
well, she's right..and btw she's not saying that everyone should stop using the computer it's just that you shouldn't let it take over your life…
When I was young my parents thought Fleetwood Mack et al were ruining the manners and future of youth. Every generation is ruined by the what the past generations fail to come to terms with, iz human nature.
I AGREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Re: Debaucherina – lol You're young aren't you? Fight with the parents today?
I love my computer too.
HOWEVER
The reason isn't totally because computers have taken over. It is because it is no longer safe for children to play outdoors like we used to. Gone are the days when kids would meet up after dinner and play in the neighbourhood until dark. The world is a much more hostile place now. It's changed how we view the world completely. Children are no longer free to be children. With computers and internet children are potentially not safe in their own homes but at least a parent can monitor what they can see.
That is true to a huge extent, but the real problem is that there is no more corporal punishment. Kids these days realise and take advantage of the fact that there are no real consequences for their actions. A good caning or strapping would usually sort out a wayward kid back in the day, and you can bet there was no pupil-on-teacher violence then.
BRING BACK THE SMACK!!!!!
… I like the way we are all linked… and if you think your kid is spending too much time in front of the computer.. shut it off and send them outside. Or text them to get their asses outside and get some sun.
She's right! Every word of it!
I believe…..she is right!
AMEN STEVIE!!!!!!!!!
Love Stevie Nicks. Love, Love, Love. Amen.
Stevie is always right… I totally and completely agree… WIsh there were more celebrities like you gal… Love you forever sorcerer…!
I'm 17 and use the computer, TV, and my phone everyday…….and i agree with Stevie. So many of my friends have Myspace and Facebook and its their life, even i get annoyed about the obsession with with the internet. As far as the rudeness goes, Im not sure if thats technologies fault as it is the parents!
She's absolutely correct.
I don't know why some people are hating on her for having an opinion. It's not like she spontaneously came up with this statement. It's most likely part of an interview where the interviewer asked her something like how different society is today compared to when she was a big star in the 70s. What was she supposed to do? Just sit there and look at him/her? And bringing up her drug past does not negate whatever she has to say. I admire someone who was able to ditch her habit, admit what mistakes she made in the past, and live to tell about it.
I love Stevie Nicks, She is not completely right, but she makes somewhat of a point about computers and human relationships
Social graces?! Is she the pot or the kettle? Who stole whose husband only a few years back? And, wonder how that message was sent!!! Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan but that's a bit hypocritical.
i'm guilty but SHE'S RIGHT we all need to unplug, it's fucked up
why don't my messages show up?!
well…she does have a point there
I am a child of the 80s and I agree with her. In fact, all my friends feel the same way. We used to go out and ride bikes, hang out in the neighborhood or head to the local pizza place or park. We had video games, but it wasn't as dominating an activity as it is today. Plus all the computer and texting now, that's why so many kids are obese these days. Though, I admit, all the technology is not lost on many adults either.
I am guilty of this, however that doesn't take away the truthfulness of this quote. She's absolutely correct.
This is just silly… Maybe you should blame the parents for not making their kids go outside and play and letting technology raise their kids for them?? The internet is so mind opening, where else can you find the answers to all the questions you ever dreamed of for free??? Old people need to get with the program and realize that the internet does not equal just porn and myspace!!!!
Also… Eww you all agree with her??? Honestly can you think of the last time you chose to sit on the computer instead of going out with your friends? Because I cant. Maybe this is a personal problem not the internet's fault. Plus I don't really add people on myspace or facebook unless I actually know them or we have mutual friends, I think its really weird that people talk to random strangers and develop relationships with them… but in the days before the internet those people probably just sat at home anyways not having anyone to talk to. Also social networking sites help me keep in contact with people I have met at random parties or shows and would never talk to again had it not been for the internet, therefore I think it helps you make more real life friends. Everything is good in moderation! Oh and I didn't have a cell phone until one day I was walking home from school and some guy pulled over and started following me and whipped out his dick and tried to get me to get in the car… then my mom made me file a police report and the officer told her she was crazy for not giving me a phone… I'm just saying I can deal with a few loud talkers on their cell phones in the grocery store if it means being constantly connected to my friends, family, and emergency agencies!
It is the truth - regardless of how old she is. People are obnoxious. I especially hate it when they have their cells on speaker and are screaming a conversation right next to you. It's like bitch - no one whats to hear your life. Turn that shit off speaker and put the cell up to your ear. Damn! Why do people have to be so loud?
STEVIE RULES!!!!
Much truth to her statement…. Its not the kids Stevie it the Stupid people that are raising these children. Parent are so Fucking lazy these days it's gross. THey want to be friends with their kids not parents…..
Stevie,
Maybe you need to meet Madonna's children. Manners are still there with the computer age, it just takes the right parenting. IÂ guess you have not met them.
its true. when i was 5 years old i didn't know how to turn a computer on, let alone upload pictures like the girl on the kodak commercial.
What? It's true.
These Fleetwood Mac has beens just will not leave center stage. Who gives a flying fuck what Stevie Nicks thinks? The internet has connected the world in a way that all of her silly songs never could. Memo to Nicks: Time to retire.
