Pageant Officials Continue To Distance Themselves From Miss California
Shanna Moakler, a former Miss USA herself and one of the heads of the California pageant, has just posted a blog about why Miss California's answer to our question about gay marriage was one big FAIL!
She says:

well, I just got back from a interview at CBS, and I can say after not sleeping for about 2 days and trying to sum up emotions in a 30 second interview wasn't easy, I wanted to take to my blog so I can put into words my thoughts and feelings, I find writing is best for me anyway.
First, I want to be clear on the fact, that I have NOT and will not abandon our reigning Miss California, thou I have a STRONG difference of opinion, I do NOT hate her, nor do I have any issue with her stating her opinion, she is not the first conservative christian titleholder to be in pageants. I agree with the majority that this IS what makes our country great and that is of course freedom of speech. She was asked a questioned and she answered it.
But I want to explain to the masses, what the TITLE of Miss USA stands for to me, and being a former Miss USA, I feel I have a pretty good sense of it. Miss USA travels the world and she competes at the Miss UNIVERSE pageant as a representation of her country. She is a ambassador, a role model and needs to be able to show diplomacy on all issues. sadly for California THIS is where we lost the crown. Not for her answer or even her beliefs, because again, sadly IN California her beliefs at this point in time are the majority. But she lost the crown because she wasn't able to convey compassion for ALL the people that as MISS USA she would be representing. and if YOU like it or not, gays and lesbians make up this country as well. THIS is why we have judges so they can find the RIGHT woman who obtains these qualities. they are crucial in my eyes when holding a honor and title as big as being Miss USA. The panel of judges was qualified and did their job, they represented all of us, men, woman, black, white, gay and straight.
I think Miss California's willingness to stand by her convictions and ( in my eyes, simply made the question more personal then it needed to be,) has in essence made a great positive impact cause it has brought a issue important to me to the for front of the media and that is civil rights. I have blogged and petitioned for gay rights in the past and if anything positive can come out of this, It's that it has people talking and we need to have people talking and we need MANY conversations on this topic to take place, especially in the state of California and with Prop 8.
I do however want to apologize to the men and woman who have continually supported the Miss California USA pageant. I know some were hurt and felt a sense of betrayal, but I thank you for your understanding, communication, love and continued support.

I think that the scrutiny towards Miss California is absolutely uncalled for. She did not say she was not a friend of the gay community, just that she does not agree with gay marriage. Her strength in saying the way she felt was what made her a actual credible candidate. Her religion shapes her beliefs, and to lie and say she agrees with gay marriage would make her a liar. Do we want a Miss America who is a liar. I do not think so. And the fact that she would represent the U.S. in Miss Universe just shows that she is the freedom of speech that America was founded on. Not everyone has to agree with gay marriage, they can still have gay family members and friends and support them without believing it to be the right thing to do. Not all of us are hateful just because we don't agree with you. Maybe we should give you as hard a time as you are giving Miss California, because we don't like the way you had wanted her to answer it. You have already ruined her chances, isnt that enough Perez?

I love Shanna Moakler - She's right. I'm a CHRISTIAN too and I do believe that marriage should only be between a Man and a Woman. I think the problem lies in the way she answered the question. As Miss USA, you can't alienate a group of peoplee. She should have been more sensitive.
With that said, I'm not sure I would have come out with a sensitive answer on LIVE TV, with all the cameras and eyes on me. But what Miss California could have said the next day is to have been more passionate to gays instead of continously defending herself, and claiming she lost the crown because of it. That's where she loses points with me.

I have never been a fan of Shanna, but I applaud her on her response. Miss USA should be for ALL equality. Just think of all the gay people in the pageant industry that Miss Californis dissed. while i do find it a BIT annoying that perez won't stop talking about this, i think the intentions are good- he's trying to fight for his rights and it's not like the gay issue is something you can solve easily, it does need attention to it, especially in the recent events happening. I love Miss California. She is a strong woman. The Miss USA pageant died this week. Judging women based on political correctness destroys the virtue of women's intelligence and wholesome virtue (which most Hollywood starlets lost with their virginity). By their standards, beauty pageant women should win by doing everything advertised in the Berkeley Barb. A lot of folks won't be watching it next year.
Perez made an ass out of the whole pageant and himself too. Carrie Prejean is by far the real winner. She has more class than anyone at the pageant.
