More Troubling News From Slumdog Kids
Following the controversy over the alleged attempted sale of Slumdog Millionaire child actor Rubina Ali by her father Rafiq Qureshi, Rubina's older sister, Sana Ali, is saying that the success of the film has destroyed her family.
13-year-old Sana said that since the media fallout, her father, who is no longer married to her biological mother, has driven her out, claiming that "My father said I was unwanted and Rubina was more precious. Abba [father] cared for us well before Slumdog. The Oscar has destroyed my family."
Danny Boyle has asked "the media to consider the possible negative impacts of the recent media scrutiny on nine-year-old Rubina, and assist in protecting her interests through sensitive reporting to limit further unnecessary exploitation of her rights and interests."

Nothing about this story sat right … from the moment I sat in the theater to see it! Continuous British exploitation of India is the classic case of art imitating life. This formulaic/simplistic script that made it to the silver screen at the most opportune moment in the Obama era when the world decided it was time to celebrate everything color. How did this new "world-embracing" West respond? By throwing undeserved awards to a at-best, average film. Meanwhile the very community whose story was supposedly being told was underpaid and is now placed in yet another exploitative position where more money can be made in time of the release of the film's DVD so marketing opportunity comes knocking on the slum doors! Nothing about the West's response and ill treatment of such third world countries will ever sit right unless real attention is given to their plight, period.
