Police Let Slumdog Dad Walk Free

He wasn't trying to sell his daughter after all??

Rafiq Qureshi, the father of 9-year-old Slumdog Millionaire starlet Rubina Ali was arrested earlier this week on the suspicion of putting his daughter up for an illegal adoption.

Qureshi has since been released from prison due to the fact that police have not found any actual evidence of Rafiq trying to sell his daughter for $300,000!!

The accused father is now complaining to reporters that the story was a "lie made up by foreign journalists playing games with me."

Something about this story still isn't sitting right with us!!

What do U think???

      Weird.

      LIAR!

I think it's important to point out that there was no 'arab' attempting to buy the girl- - he was approached (and set up) by the News of the World, a trashy UK newspaper, which obviously was having a slow week. This is not really news. You should get your facts straight. If you can't get that right, why bother reporting on it. Also you seem to be racist against arabs - I've noticed this before. You must already know the score so why proliferate these lies? You have a warped view of the world and can't see past your own needs and situation, Mario. You're a propaganda machine.

      thats nuts

    5. 5

totally trying to sell the daughter…

    6. 6

You mean his Craigslist ad was not enough to convict him?

    7. 7

Madonna must've stepped in and put down a payment for her….

    8. 8

I totally believe this guy tried to sell his daughter. The people in India are desperate and poorer than poor.

    9. 9

I kinda think it was made up to get the reporters some fame/credit. To adopt you would need all the right paperwork and as we can see in Madonna's case it's not that easy. So how did this dad think he was going to pull it off? I'm if-y about this whole thing.

    10. 10

I believe he was seriously thinking about doing it. When news got out he retracted. Supposedly he was going to give her in 'adoption' to some sheik whose wife can't have children. That is a little hard to swallow since these sheiks have many kids by other wifes so one more or less doesn't matter. Whether he was set up by a UK publication or not is besides the point. The point is that whoever it was, the sheikor the set up, he was pondering on the idea.

Don't forget that, and set me straight if I'm wrong, these actors didn't get paid. I think the producer set up a school or is setting up a school. So, in India where people are poorer than beneath dirt not getting paid has to be tough. Set me straight if I'm wrong.

    13. 13

Again, someone from a poor country trying to sell his kid to make sure it has a better life (or so they say) sounds like something Madonna would approve of - so it's hypocritical of you Perez.

    14. 14

Her father is a scumdog. He would improve as a person if he would just google nozycat

    15. 15

Different culture that you have to be born into to understand the sheer desperation of some of the people.

    16. 16

Lol! What about YOU telling us what do YOU think??????
You have a very comfortable position obnoxious Pig!

Nothing about this story sat right … from the moment I sat in the theater to see it! Continuous British exploitation of India is the classic case of art imitating life. This formulaic/simplistic script that made it to the silver screen at the most opportune moment in the Obama era when the world decided it was time to celebrate everything color. How did this new "world-embracing" West respond? By throwing undeserved awards to a at-best, average film. Meanwhile the very community whose story was supposedly being told was underpaid and is now placed in yet another exploitative position where more money can be made in time of the release of the film's DVD so marketing opportunity comes knocking on the slum doors! Nothing about the West's response and ill treatment of such third world countries will ever sit right unless real attention is given to their plight, period.

    18. 18

This is blatant racism, he's Indian, he's poor, so naturally he must be trying to sell his own flesh and blood. You media people sicken me!!!!

    19. 19

i think you're an asshole, as usual, for jumping to conclusions. you're a fuckin piss poor current event reporter, leave that shit to cnn. your fruity ass is good for one thing…pap shots of celebrities doing stupid shit. other than that, i hope you fail in life.

    20. 20

I still think "SOMETHING" happened! This freak is trying to get publicity or something! They do shit like that in India and I don't believe for ONE minute that this weirdo is innocent! Poor child, at least her mother adores her!

    21. 21

WTF! THEY HAVE HIM ON TAPE!! THE POLICE IN INDIA ARE A JOKE!

Isn't this one of those countries that marries the daughters off real young? I think he saw the $300,000 $$$$ and saw a huge house and being set for life with her being "sold"… He must be just pissed as hell for getting caught….

    24. 24

In India female children are sold, killed, aborted and who knows what else everyday. Hell ya he would have sold her in a second.

    25. 25

A British tabloid carried out a sting operation. One of their reporters called up Rubina's dad posing as an Arab Sheikh who was interested in adopting Rubina as their child. They met up, the reporter in disguise captured their talks on camera. Rubina's dad agreed to 'sell' her; give her up for adoption for a huge some of money. Later on when they published the report in newspapers, her father denied it. Its sad. They are slum people who are illiterate, but to get greedy like that? One can't help but feel bad for Rubina and many slum children like her. It's good of Danny Boyle to employ a social worker to look after Rubina's best interests. A wealth Non Resident Indian has also come forward to sponsor her education, by helping to put her in a good school and college.

News of The World have been pulling the phony Sheik scam for years to invent absurd stories. They have been sued as many times as they have used th ridiculous idea. But NOTW is THE worst tabloid in UK and that is saying something, since the country is awash in cheap crap. Perez should get his "news" from reliable sources rather than Sun,Mail or NOTW. Do grow up you silly boy..

    27. 27

i beleive that he was trying to sell that lil girl.. which honestly is totally disgusting

Re: LavinaRe: Lavina – The police have heard the tapes and would have enough evidence to convict him if it was true. This is called 'trial by media'. In all honesty he'd get more money giving interviews for the next year. It's even possible that he turned them down for an interview and they were pissed off. Also - even if he decided this was a good idea (unlikely from both a moral and financial perspective) he could never get away with it so there's no way he would seriously consider it. But how does an aspirational man respond to someone posing as a rich sheik? A polite and sensitive refusal. Not outright condemnation in his refusal. There was no evidence that he agreed to do it, so it seems he stayed on the right side of the law. The reporters are squeezing the suggestion of a scandal for all it's worth.

    29. 29

Re: Lavina – Anyway, this girl has media, advocates, lawyers, investigators, teachers (she is being helped to continue her education and must do so to receive her bursary later), friends and film makers observing her progress. Nothing about this 'story' makes sense - he might not be perfect but he is innocent until proven guilty and he's been feeding and clothing her for many years in more difficult circumstances without resorting to selling her. She is happy, lively, a good size and weight with thick healthy hair and not covered in bruises either. The media attention is the main negative aspect of this story, and her broken family has become a focus. Families do break up and parents can be bitter, but this is all normal.
