The Newly Crowned Miss USA Also Speaks Out On Gay Marriage!
This is why Miss North Carolina deserved to win the prestigious Miss USA title!
In addition to scoring first place in both the swimsuit and evening gown competitions, Kristen Dalton also knows how to give the right answers to make everyone feel inclusive, like an equal.
On this morning's Today show, Dalton made an appearance and spoke with Al Rocker about winning the title and the whole media buzz behind it.
When asked if she was surprised at the political tones of the interview questions, Dalton responded with:
"Although I respect her opinion, you know, as Americans, the beauty of America is that we all have a right to our own opinion. I'm proud of [Miss California] for speaking from her heart, and she's passionate and what she believes in, and she's proud of herself."
So did Dalton think Miss California received a fair question? The Miss USA winner said it was!
"Absolutely a fair question. It's a social issue that surrounds us every day that I think citizens should be aware of. As a state representative, I think we should be prepared to answer it."
And of course Rocker asked Dalton how she would have responded and if she received that question, and she gave the response of a true Miss USA.
Dalton explains:
"The beautiful thing about America is that we have the right to choose, we have the right to choose what partner we want to love, commit and spend the rest of our lives with. I think that all couples should be able to be recognized legally, and they should be able to enter into a union. Whether or not it should be defined as marriage, I don't know, I'll leave that up to the politicians."

No actually, our laws aren't based on what the people want. Laws are based on the rights protected in the Constitution. This way the majority can not disenfranchise the minority. The majority of our country was against desegregation in schools, and interracial marriage. Read up and educate yourself.

Civil Unions are not recognised by the Federal government, and many state governments. So people in civil unions are being denied THOUSANDS of rights that come with marriage.

I think you were wrong, wrong, wrong with the way you handled this situation! The Miss Cali contestant answered your question with an honest answer of how she felt about the topic, not some phony made up to please you answer like the winner gave after the fact when she had time to create a PC answer after seeing the backlash. Even though I do not agree or support Miss Cali's opinion on Gay marriage, I feel she has the right to have her own opinion and should not be bashed for it because it is not in agreement with your opinion. It should have been an opportunity for you to show that you respect her for honest answer and then took it on a level to educate not humiliate. I think that the issue here is not about gay marriage at all, but about freedom of speech. You may not agree with what Miss California had to say, but she has every right to say it just as you have every right to criticize what she says. I do not think that you should be insulting her intelligence because of her personal or political viewpoints, and doing so only makes you seem close minded, judgmental, and hypocritical.

If "all couples should be able to be recognized legally" and "able to enter into a union" then what comes next, adults and children? children and children? humans and animals? Once we start changing what the definition of marriage is, it opens up a whole range of arguments for other people who believe that they have right to have their relationship recognized legally as well. That's what people mean when they say it's about morals.
On another note, Miss North Carolina had a lot longer to think about her answer to this question, she wasn't put on the spot in front of thousands of people. After the controversy it caused, it was obvious she would be questioned about it too, so she was able to come up with a 'politically correct' and 'non-offensive' answer. Even if she was against gay marriage, do you think she would express that opinion after the trouble it caused Miss North Carolina?
Also, what if Miss California had said that she supported gay marriage? Then she would be offending those who do not. And if she had given a neutral answer suggesting that it was up to the states to decide for themselves, I've not doubt that she would have been criticized for not giving a decisive answer and not stating her own opinion. It was impossible for her to answer that question without ramifications.
