      Perez, this does not prove anypoint, in the artical it states that it was possibly a human error as same sex couple are recongnized in that hopsital. I think instead of trying to get gay marriage reconized throughout the US, there should be a universal "next of Kin" type card like a drivers liscense that names each persons next of kin, that way there is no question what so ever who that person wants notified in case something happens. Estranged family memebers can not pull rank.

      Sadly that happens far too often. In Canada on December 9, 2004, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that the marriage of same-sex couples is constitutional, that the federal government has the sole authority to amend the definition of marriage. It also protects religious institutions as the Charter's protection of freedom of religion grants religious institutions the right to choose not to perform marriage ceremonies of same-sex couples if they see fit. This counters the argument many oponents had that a minister/priest/rabbi etc. could face lagal action if they refuse to perform a ceremony.

      Everything that has happened thus far with the whole Miss California thing misses the point.

      I have seen the question replayed over and over and never once does Perez ask her what her personal opinion of gay marriage is. He simply asks her if other states should follow Vermont's lead and legalize same sex marriage. This whole controversy could have been easily avoided if she had stuck to the question that was asked. For not answering the question alone, she should have had points deducted or whatever the judging process was.

      Beyond the fact that she did not answer the question that was asked of her, she showed her ignorance by stating people have a choice about marriage, or "opposite marriage," as she so eloquently stated. In actuality, unless you live in one of the four states that has legalized gay marriage, you do not have a choice. Period. As Miss California, she should know this, especially with Prop 8 still in the news. In her "country" she thinks marriage should be between a man and a woman. Well, in her state, it still is, thanks to a majority of 4%. No choice about it.

      I am bothered by the media's incessant focus on her opposition to gay marriage. If that's her opinion, fine, she's entitled to it (no matter how wrong I and others might think it is), but play the tape back - no one asked her her opinion to begin with!

I fail to see how gay marriage would have prevented the ignorance of the nurse. I'm sure now that the hospital was made aware of the situation, it won't happen again. By refusing to allow gays to marry (a civil rights issue), the state–which is supposed to be neutral/secular–is discriminating on behalf of religious/cultural groups.       Maybe the hospital staff was not aware that they are couple. It does not state that. And, if the patient was having some severe difficulty breathing, it wouldn't matter if it was his mother, father, children or spouse there. If they need to do a treatment or something they kick out whoever is there. I've had to leave my child's side in the hospital before because they were doing something and didn't want people in the way or to freak out. So, honestly, I don't think this is an issue of gay discrimination.

      I think it was NickiSue that said about drawing up legal documents ahead of time like a living will. Stating like DNR, or who the person designates to make any decisions on care. This shouldn't just be same sex couples, this should also be done in a situation where there are children by a first spouse and there is a second spouse. If you were dating someone, didn't want to marry a partner, was a child with a step parent, were divorcing your spouse etc. there are also many other scenarios where people can't do what they want with a patient.       Corporations and insurance companies offer these options. It's not like they aren't out there. That's what's at the base of your agenda, isn't it? Benefits?

      I agree that homosexuals need to have marital-esque rights. My concern is calling it marriage. I would prefer it be called civil union. The main reason is because marriage started of as a religious tradition with Adam and Eve. I will always believe that marriage is fundamentally between a man and a woman. Society has progressed to a point where it that needs to change. However, in redefining marriage, you are taking away my religious rights to believe my fundamental beliefs. Once the law gets involved, I can face legal repercussions for believing otherwise. That seems a little communistic. Therefore, if a "marriage" is performed in a court house, it is a civil union, gay or straight. But if a religious figure presides, then it is marriage. Even my greek orthodox friend felt the same way. He first had a civil union in Vegas. Then he got married in the church later on.
