Words of Wisdom

nl.jpg

Nicole Lamarche, Miss California 2003 and now an ordained minister at Cotuit Federated Church in Cotuit, Mass, is speaking out.

She says:

"As a pastor and a former Miss California, I am often asked to interpret what the Word of God has to say on a particular subject. I am quite confident that God prefers that we human beings stick to speaking for ourselves. And yet there are occasions when God’s Word is used as a weapon, and I feel compelled to speak.

In the past few days, much has been made of the words of Miss California USA, Carrie Prejean. She stated that marriage is between a man and a woman. I write not in response to her opinion, but rather about her comments that followed: that the Bible condones her words. She said, 'It's not about being politically correct, it's about being biblically correct.' While this sentiment is shared by many who seek to condemn gay people and gay marriage, citing pieces of the Bible to further one’s own prejudice fails to meet the Bible on its own terms.

Most people seeking to condemn gay people point to the Book of Leviticus, where we read that men lying with men is an abomination. However, we rarely hear of other verses found in the book of Leviticus that are equally challenging. For example, Leviticus also tells us that eating shrimp and lobster is an abomination. And that a person should not wear material woven of two kinds of material—an impossible mandate for a pageant contestant!

In Paul’s letter to the community in Corinth we read, ‘For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church….’ And yet these words have not prevented Christian denominations from ordaining women, such as myself. Sadly, the Bible has been used to further prejudice throughout history. We have used it to permit ourselves to enslave people; to conquer and kill; and to denigrate the earth.

The truth is that it is difficult to know for sure the intentions of the biblical authors, but we do know something about God. Those of us who know God through Jesus of Nazareth know that he went to great lengths to express God’s love to people who were labeled as outcasts. He spent time with children, prostitutes, and lepers, all of whom were labeled as outside of the grasp of the Holy. As we continue to seek God’s vision for us as a nation grounded in a love for justice, I pray that we might move closer to the cause of grace.”

  4. 4

I love this so much…she is a very wise woman…people are just ignorant and follow to judge instead of loving others for the quality of person that they are……

    Perez,
Please never ever stop spreading this kind of love.

  13. 13

Well said. I've been basically saying this for years. I just didn't have the verses from the manmade book to back me up…

Where can I write her to thank her. Finally, someone speaking some sense. People who use the bible as a sword are missing the entire point of what JC was all about. JC was a cool dude who preached for the outcasts. Christianity is supposed to be about loving everyone and never casting stones. This country is SO off course thanks to idiotic bible-as-sword like this uneducated pageant person used it. Thank you for this wise essay.

  19. 19

Like the song says people…all we need is love :)

  20. 20

THANK YOU PEREZ! As a mother of an incredibly loving, gifted, talented, hardworking GAY son, I appreciate her words so much. I feel like I am constantly defending the fact that I have known this child was gay since he was 2. He was not interested at all in his brothers Matchbox cars and only wanted to play with the Pretty Ponies and to do my hair :) I have 4 children, he is the youngest, his older brother (the only other boy) is a total jock, hetero and loves his brother. I have defended your stand, maybe not your language LOL but you fighting the good fight!

  21. 21

    wow- what a great statement.

  22. 22

Perez,Miss California must love you as you have made her a HUGE celebrity, nobody gives a shyte about the winner.

  23. 23

Bravo! She said it all. I'm straight and happily married. Wish everybody could have the same rights that I do!

  24. 24

omg ok i know ur gay perez and i get your whole thing about being upset about miss california and i totally support gay marriage and gay people being together but ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!! this is a site to report things about celebrities not a gay rights site. I am so sick of hearing about this miss america shit…. ITS OVER! the end! NEXXXXTTTT please no more.

  25. 25

Exactly the Bible says women shouldn't be ministers.. and you are there for you don't care what the Bible says. You aren't allowed to pick and choose what verses of the Bible to follow. Just because your church says it's okay to be a minister and gay marriage is okay doesn't mean they are right. It means they are going against the BIBLE and there fore against God's Word and His commandments.

  26. 26

    Finally some logic..

  27. 27

all the boys and all the girls are beggin if you seek JC

  28. 28

Thank you! This is exactly why I don't follow religion. So many people have used it has a tool of hate and control. For pities sake, Jesus hung out with drunks and prostitutes. He is the LAST person to hate others.

  29. 29

I just can't see where this helps your cause. And the subject is getting SOOOOOOOO OLD>!!!!! PLEEEEEZE start another website for your religious, sexual and political crap so this one can go back to being fun and entertaining. Because right now, it's not fun and it's definitely not entertaining to anyone but YOU

  30. 30

I'm quoting her next time my grandparents shove the bible in my face and tell me I'm immoral!

    =}

  31. 31

Good for her!…..Hey Perez Hilton, lets go have coffee with her at her church, what do you say?

  32. 32

AMAZING! One of the best posts you've put up in a while. Keep up the good work poopoorezzzz….Me like long time!

  33. 33

This is absolutely the most beautiful thing I have ever read. This will save people's lives.

  34. 34

She wrote that very well…she's an intelligent woman and is a better miss CA than that other girl

  35. 35

These are very powerful words taken from someone who's been on both sides. That's why it's important to take time to truly understand what you believe in before sharing your beliefs with others because you never know how it can affect someone's life…

  36. 36

    Someone's got it right.

  37. 37

    amazing

  38. 38

Re: MR PAPI – And apparently not everyone "love" good grammar either.

  39. 39

I despise religion because most of the zombies quote gods word like they heard it first hand. I respect this chick for being well read and spoken. and for realizing that she doesn't know her gods intentions.
    PLUS SHE'S KINDA FUCKING HOT.

  40. 40

    i love that, very nice.

  41. 41

    she must be an episcopalian!

  42. 42

She stated that marriage is between a man and a woman. I write not in response to her opinion, but rather about her comments that followed: that the Bible condones her words.

ummmmm No that's not what she said, but nice try…

  43. 43

That was very well said. Way to go Ms. Lamarche!

  44. 44

    well said!!!!

  45. 45

wow– very well said!! she should be ms universe :)

  46. 46

    Well said.

  47. 47

    SHE NAILED IT

  48. 48

I am not a fan of organized religion, but this is a well thought out, well written piece. Bravo!

  49. 49

    Tremendous words of wisdom!!

  50. 50

    THANK YOU!

  51. 51

I just sent this to my bible thumping mother.

  52. 52

    well said!!

  53. 53

    beautiful

  54. 54

Re: Swirled Confections – i like ya.

  55. 55

    Amen, Sister!

  56. 56

    Awesome

  57. 57

Re: UWishh – well, if others cannot "pick and choose" what verses to follow or not, then you cannot either. duhh. go stone some people and enslave the rest. dumbass.

  58. 58

This woman is right on the money. I like what she said and agree 100%

  59. 59

It never ceases to amaze me how people conveniently ignore the other statements in the Bible that are considered abominations. That said, sadly humans are prone to judge, condemn and hate others that don't fall into their very limited view of the world. Those who hide behind their religion in order to create more misery in this world, are and will remain the losers. Those who have to profess their moral superiority are usually the ones with the most skeletons in their closets…

  60. 60

Why do people feel the need to to follow a voice who gives a shit do what makes you happy.

  63. 63

    Beautiful words… Wonderful… Thank-you Thank-you Thank-you!!

  64. 64

Everything that has happened thus far with the whole Miss California thing misses the point.

I have seen the question replayed over and over and never once does Perez ask her what her personal opinion of gay marriage is. He simply asks her if other states should follow Vermont's lead and legalize same sex marriage. This whole controversy could have been easily avoided if she had stuck to the question that was asked. For not answering the question alone, she should have had points deducted or whatever the judging process was.

Beyond the fact that she did not answer the question that was asked of her, she showed her ignorance by stating people have a choice about marriage, or "opposite marriage," as she so eloquently stated. In actuality, unless you live in one of the four states that has legalized gay marriage, you do not have a choice. Period. As Miss California, she should know this, especially with Prop 8 still in the news. In her "country" she thinks marriage should be between a man and a woman. Well, in her state, it still is, thanks to a majority of 4%. No choice about it.

I am bothered by the media's incessant focus on her opposition to gay marriage. If that's her opinion, fine, she's entitled to it (no matter how wrong I and others might think it is), but play the tape back - no one asked her her opinion to begin with!

  65. 65

    Re: ammmber
    Right back at ya ;)

  66. 29 says – reply to this

    66

tell me perez, if you deny god then why do you insist on using a minister's words to validate your hatred towards miss cali? this is a new low, even for your fatass.

  67. 67

damn, someone give that woman a tv show

  68. 68

Roland Martin on CNN served you. Read his article.

  69. 69

Well said and well done. Words for all of us to live by.

  70. 70

If only all christians were as intelligent as her! Sadly many of them use their religion as a weapon to hold themselves in positions of superiority over 'others'.

  71. 71

some things in the Bible are typical of one type of society, time, etc. So you have to place them in a CONTEXT. However, the great majority of the things in the Bible DO NOT change. For example, homosexuality. God's intention is VEEEERY CLEAR for mankind in genesis 1:27-28. That says it all. i don't care if she's a minister or whatever, SHE CAN NOT DENY THAT THE BIBLE IS THE WORD OF GOD AND THAT GOD DOES NOT APPROVE OF HOMOSEXUALITY AND, FURTHERMORE, "GAY MARRIAGE". HOMOSEXUAL ACTIVITY IS AN ABOMINATION IN HIS EYES, LET ALONG GAY "MARRIAGE". AS I ALWAYS SAY, NO ONE IS ALLOWED TO CONDEMN HOMOSEXUALS, WE HAVE TO LOVE THEM. GOD LOVES THEM, AS THEY ARE HIS CHILDREN. BUT GOD HATES SIN. AND HOMOSEXUAL ACTIVITY IS A SIN. PERIOD

  72. 72

I gotta say–I think parading women onstage in a bathing suit and evening gown in this day and age is an abomination, but at least THIS Miss Cali has her shit together.

    Team Perez :)

  73. 73

Seriously Perez, you need to face the fact that California has voted against gay marriage TWICE. This means the MAJORITY OF CALIFORNIANS disagree with it for one reason or another. It has nothing to do with hate. I come on your site for celebrity gossip, not to be bullied into your views. And truthfully, even if I agreed with them I still wouldn't want to read your thoughts because that's not what most of us even come on here for. Get over yourself and quit with the constant updates on this topic - it's tired and your approach isn't working to change minds - not mine anyway.

  74. 74

Jesus also said, "Go and sin no more.' 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind and soul,' I am a doctor coming for the sick. 'I come to fulfill the word of God, not to eliminate it.' 'He who is without sin, let him cast the first stone,' 'Sell all your goods and follow me.' 'No man comes to the father, but by me.' Jesus was very devisive in his time, can we expect him to be less devisive now? If you have no sin in your life, then you can judge Carrie Prejean.

  75. 75

In other words, God loves all of us. He expects us to treat each other with respect and not make outcasts of anyone.

One final word-did all of you read what she said about the bible? It's not flawless. I am a staunch supporter of equal rights for everyone whether gay, straight or a leper. No one of us can or SHOULD dictate how the other should live his life. A fair number of those who can recite the bible and call themselves Christians aren't….

  76. 76

    Beautifully said!

  77. 77

    Re: GETTERDUN – Bahahahahaha!

  78. 78

Persecution of any one group is intolerable. Stick to the this subject, Perez. It's your website and don't drop the focus on something so enormous. It's easy for those with no worries about somebody else or gov't deciding their future to tell you to stop. These are the test of times and you passed with flying colors, my friend.

  79. 79

wow, that was actually quite beautifully said.

  80. 80

It is shocking, how many people don't understand the truth about the Bible. It is NOT about uniting people and making them feel good. Jesus hung out with the outcasts - yes. But NOT to partake in what they were doing or to condone it. He was there to give them his message… a message that was incredibly DIVISIVE. He didn't tell people what they want to hear, he told them the truth. Why do you think he was mocked and punished with crucification?

And yes - lobster, shrimp, and shellfish REALLY are bad for you. These are bottom-feeders that consume waste and impurities, making it an unhealthy choice to eat. But again, people aren't interested in the truth - only in what they want to hear.

  81. 81

Re: Lezann – YES! yes, right on the money. what a loser, that miss california.

  82. 82

Smart and Intelligent! Way to go. Excellent response.

    86

Beautifully written. What a beautiful woman inside and out.

  87. 87

This is what I will quote when my grandparents decide to shove their close minded religion down my throat. Religion is a faith in something and something that is unique and special to each person and should NEVER be forced on someone else. If you are so deep in your faith why force those passions on others? Its pointless.

  88. Limu says – reply to this

    88

AMEN. If there were more eloquent people like this advocating the word of God maybe people (like me) wouldn't have such a negative opinion of organized religion, and how much damage and divisiveness, as opposed to unity, it causes.

Perez was right - you want someone who can at least put an intelligent response together, no matter what her opinion is - she need to know how to respond like this woman - I don't know or care what her personal belief is but she sure is well informed on the book she stands behind.

  89. 89

    Hallelujiah sister!

  90. 90

Re: perezito_is_an_asshole – How is something that doesn't hurt another living creature a 'sin'?! How bloody backward mate.

  91. 91

    Re: Lezann
" He simply asks her if other states should follow Vermont's lead and legalize same sex marriage. "
So what do you think would have happened had she said no, other states shouldn't follow Vermont's lead and legalize same sex marriage? People still would have took it as being opinionated and homophobic.

  92. 92

i like this girl… b/c she basically says - there's no written instructions. Personally - I am married to a man. It's who I fell in love with. Why, oh why would I try to tell someone who to love, marry, sleep with or hell for that matter what to have for lunch. These are all very personal choices. In my head - (my own little world)… my God wants you to love people and would not put limitations on love.

  93. 93

    And there you have it

  94. 94

    What an evolved being! Beautiful.

  95. 95

Excellent scholarship! Incidentally, there is NOTHING in the Old Testament mentioning women "lying" with women. So I guess it's OK, right?

  96. ritaj says – reply to this

    96

I have read the Bible, and I don't pick and choose verses to further a cause or prejudices. I love others as God loves me. Having said that - being a reader of the Bible - I must say that (taking into account the Old Testament and focusing on the teachings of Jesus and the disciples in the New Testament) marriage should only be between a man and a woman.

I don't have any hatred in my heart towards Perez or any other gay person. My belief concerning marriage is my personal and religious belief. If Vermont, Connecticut, and whoever want to legalize gay marriage, then that's their decision. I'm not going to scream, argue, or whine about it. I respect their decision; and I hope that Perez, Hollywood, and media run by Hollywood will show respect to those who don't think like they do. I also pray that Perez will get rid of his hatred toward Miss Cal and those who share her beliefs.

Perez - if you're going to write and talk about acceptance, tolerance, respecting others; then you need to respect and love those who do not think and believe as you do. Practice what you preach.

  97. 97

She didn't say that she supports gay marriage now did she? She basically said she didn't know. Carrie Prejean didn't condemn gay people. Although this diatribe seems to imply that. Why did she feel she had to comment? We don't know any more now than before she spoke. There are a lot of phoney preachers out there to, phoney churches run by satan's minions. So unless she has some REAL insight, she means nothing to me. And by her implication that Carrie Prejean was condemning gay people (which she clearly was NOT), I don't trust her as a messenger of God.

  98. 98

This women is as ignorant as all of you. She sounds like she's let a few too many liberals go to her head. In those times eating those things was an abomination because it could kill you, the same with the fabrics. Technology has advanced, our bodies have not. The Bible couldn't be more clear about its opinion on homosexuality. I don't condone hate on anyone, but Miss California or whoever was correct in saying that marriage is between man and woman.

  99. 99

Exactly. That's the point many of us Centrist Christians try to make while the right-wingers are making it harder and harder for anyone to take someone calling themselves "Christian" seriously. I was told by Christ to love my neighbor and to judge not lest I be judged. If God has a problem with gay people, God will deal with them in God's time. In the mean time, I will be compassionate and loving towards everyone I can (falling short from time to time, I admit).

  100. 100

She is right if people are going to use the Bible to justify there hatred for gays thye might as well follow EVERYTHING in the Bible. So no shrimp! Also you must own slaves too!
