I'm a former Republican, now a Libertarian, and I've lived in PA my whole life. Spector was a bad Senator eight years ago: I hated him as a Republican, and I dislike him even more as a Libertarian.

With Spector changing his party, he is defrauding the Republicans that voted him into office. This is a disgusting move, though I can't say I'm not happy that Spector won't be elected again. After this, PA will finally have a senator that isn't a two-faced, senile fool– anybody other than this guy is beneficial.

By the way, it doesn't matter what side of the fence you're on; having a ruling majority in Congress is bad for everybody. Like one poster said before, government is about balance, concessions, and agreements– not control.

Actually this is a good thing so a few random republicans OR democrats can't just indefinitely stall the government from doing its work. Although traditionally a filibuster means you have to have debates on the issue and talk about it until it is resolved in senate, the senate has been using filibusters and not even debating the issue at all… just letting it die! Republicans aren't going to be irrelevant they can still vote against things and they can try to convince dems to agree with them but basically… the republicans screwed us so hard for the last 8 years and the only people that still believe in them are the same people that don't think the stephen colbert show is a joke!!

I'm not a Republican, and I'm probably one of the few people who dislike Bush for what he actually did wrong– inflate government beyond manageable proportions– but blaming him and the GOP for our current situation is insane. Yes, they would give lame answers when talking about the Housing bubble and economy, but every single administration has avoided questions they don't want to deal with. Obama did the same thing.

The situation we're in is caused by decades of government spending money we don't have, borrowing from other countries, and, basically, setting up the United States as a debtor's nation. All politicians are at fault, not just Bush and the GOP.

Those of you who retort with typical Party rhetoric ("evil Bush" "Bush screwed us" "Republicans are evil") just make yourselves sound stupid. Anyone who is intelligent enough to understand politics know that this partisan hatred is created by and supported by the Parties themselves. Insulting one another isn't going to solve anyone's problems. Spector switching Senate seats isn't rectifying Bush's mistakes; it's screwing the entire country from having an effective checks-and-balances system.

Besides, there are a number of things that Obama has continued from the Bush administration. For instance, the Iraq War– Obama vowed to be out of Iraq at the same time Bush did, in August 2011. Obama is keeping the Patriot Act alive– he wants to keep wiretapping people to "protect them." He's also escalating the War in Afghanistan, after professing to be anti-War.

If you thought these were bad ideas when Bush introduced it, then what the hell do you think of buddy-boy Obama keeping it alive? By the way, I don't hate Obama; I think he's a party tool just like every other ahole that got elected President in the past century.

bottom line: we need to realize how much our representatives (both of House and Senate) control us. Party politics keep us distracted from what's really going on. Tune into what's actually happening– civil liberties being violating, increading special-interest spending bills, government extending its own power, the FED printing trillions of dollars without any worth.

It's these problems that are screwing America. With these policies and activities in place and continuing to occur, we will no longer be the Land of the Free. And, by the way, I am not Republican; I'm a Libertarian, and all I want is for our country to be back on the terms it was founded on… the Constitution, with the addition of inherent civil liberties and reinstitution of the politically powerful citizen. Do you want the government to control what you do, or do you want to make your own decisions? I, for one, say the latter; perhaps, if you disagree, you could find another country that is already screwed up.

Here's the irony: Specter was a Democrat at the beginning of his career. He switched parties in a deal to get elected. Now, he switches back becuase he would have never made it past the Republican primary. He starts out as a coward, might as well end it as one.

He did in fact switch, but Franken still hasn't won the seat in Minnesota. The Dems therefore only have 59 seats, one short of being filibuster proof.
