Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Bill Passes House Of Reps!!!!
Victory!
On Wednesday, the US House of Representatives passed the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act - also known as the Matthew Shepard Act.
Passing with a bipartisan majority, the bill will provide additional resources to local law enforcement in the investigation of crimes driven by race, ethnicity, gender, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity and disability.
Additionally, the bill will allow the feds to step into an investigation when local agencies can't or refuse to look into serious hate crimes.
The bill will also extend federally protected categories to include sexual orientation and gender identity.
Senator Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts will introduce the Senate version of the bill soon, and President Obama has suggested that he will sign the bill should it come to his desk.
President of the Human Rights Campaign, Joe Solmonese, said that "The nation cannot wait any longer to protect all of its citizens. We should all be able to walk the streets without fear."

The only problem is that this bill includes pedophiles under the umbrella of sexual orientation and, therefore, protects them. It also excludes pregnant women and veterans.

Matthew's name on this bill is deceiving because it protects many groups, not one group more than the other.
Hatred against women, Christians and gays will be dealt with equally! We all deserve equal rights and protection and they saw this.
The purpose of this bill isn't to make any crimes against homosexuals more severe, but to say that ANY hate crime (which is a crime committed against a person because of their ethnicity, race, gender, sexuality, religion, etc.) more punishable. This bill is attempting to prevent any crimes against any specific group of people. Yes this is a big deal for the homosexuals, because sadly our nation is not completely tolerant of who they are. But just remember, people are people. If you're a Christian, remember that God loves everyone and not just straight white people. Try to show some compassion and kindness. Take this bill as a motivation to grow up a little bit and accept everyone for who they are. Cause whether you like it or not, gays are people too.

It doesn't matter what your viewpoint on gay marriage is - there is absolutely NO REASON not to support this bill. Matthew Shepherd was a beautiful boy who was murdered most brutally. Larry King didn't deserve to have his brains blown out in middle school either. No one deserves that and it's high time our country's government takes a stand!

We treat a hate-crime differently because a person is targeted based on race, gender, religion or sexual orientation (there is no other motive). If we don't treat these crimes in a special way, one law-breaker can bring harm to entire groups of people making them fearful to practice their constitutional rights such as freedom of religion, freedom of association, etc. If you have a problem with this idea, think outside of your own box and about the pain Matthew Shepherd experienced being beaten, tied to a farm fence and left to die in the hot sun at the hands of two disgusting animals disguised as human beings. This kind of shit happens everyday!
