On High Alert! Potential "Pandemic"
The Swine Flu has now spread to 10 different states throughout the US (as well as in areas of Europe)!
Cases have been reported in New York, California, Texas, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Arizona, Indiana, Nevada and Ohio with a total of 100 people infected with the potentially deadly virus.
Only one death in the US has been reported thus far. A toddler who had traveled to Texas from Mexico in early April died Monday evening in a Houston hospital of the flu.
The World Health Organization has even gone as far to saying on Wednesday the virus is "moving closer to becoming a full-scale pandemic."
President Obama has continued to stress that the government is "prepared to do whatever is necessary to control the impact of this virus" and for the public to continue to take the necessary precautions to protect themselves from the virus.

Yes it is scary. I work for the US Department of Agriculture so I'm updated on this "swine flu" as soon as information is available. I also have a 9 1/2 month old son. I fear for his health as I am hearing there are possible swine flu cases in Maryland. Keep your hands clean and away from your eyes and nose as much as possible!

I think while the danger is there that mostly this is media frenzy. According to my friend who's husband works in the health industry, there have been said 150 cases but they in truth are only 7 and the child that died was a young child who's immune system couldn't handle. alot of cases are in Mexico and who is to tell what the healthcare system is like down there

Actually, virulent strains of H1N1 are more prone to killing those with strong immune systems, as the immune response is the actual cause of death… that being said, you have all the power you need to prevent the transmission of this infection should you wish. Educate yourselves on H1N1, including previous strains (eg: Spanish Influenza) and you will see what is hype and what's not!

It's a little more serious than reglar flu. Not much is known about it, it's traveled so quickly and has come into the US, but ALSO which most of you haven't said, is that it isn't just affecting the young and old, but very healthy people. I have a feeling this is going to be like Avian Bird Flu was a few years back- the media covers it all day and starts freaking the public out and telling everyone to stock up on Tamiflu, but everything gets under control. A pandemic of Swine flu is imminent and should be taken seriously, however, it's no good to freak people out! Damn news.
Goes to show the general ignorance of the public. The reason that the alert has been raised is because the majority of people pooh pooh the level of danger. Truth is, that the more cases of low virulence flu, the more likely a mutation will produce a lethal strain. The best solution now is to WASH your hands, even at home. Don't travel. Stay home if you are feeling sick. Don't be part of the problem, the morons who think they are immune. Do the right thing, stop transmission. Use common sense, and stay clean and away.

People ARE recovering from this strain of the flu you know. Not everyone who gets it automatically gets a death sentence with it. Just like any flu, the very young and very old are affected the most. The young adults that died in Mexico could have had compromised immune systems or their bodies may not have been well taken care of. This virus will not kill a perfectly healthy young adult or middle aged adult unless they don't do anything to help themselves. I just wish people would calm down.

I think is sad the only death people care about is the one that happened in the US. There are 159 people dead in Mexico, this virus has spread to ten states already (including Michigan which is about as far from Mexico as you can get), and it's showing up in Europe too. I think it's a little more worrisome than your average flu.
