A new poll from The New Times and CBS News finds that 42% of Americans nationwide now say same sex couples should be allowed to legally marry. That's up nine points from last month, when 33% supported legalizing same sex marriage.

Why such a huge jump in one month????
Support for same sex marriage is now at its highest point since CBS News starting asking about it in 2004.
28% percent say same sex couples should have no legal recognition – down from 35% in March – while 25% support civil unions, but not marriage, for gay couples.
Progress. Progress. Progress.
Civil marriage is not about religion. It is about full equality under the law.
It will happen - and on a federal level. The question is not if it will happen but how soon?

Civil rights and marriage are mutually exclusive. You can all the same civil rights as married couples and not be married. Men and women have separate bathrooms but the same rights. Um Perez, what's the difference between a "Civil Union" and marriage? Aren't they the exact same thing except marriage is what they call it when men and women go through the ceremony and Civil Union is when two same sex partners go through the ceremony?

Gay and lesbian couples should ABSOLUTELY be able to marry by federal law. There is nothing in the bible nor on government paper that states a man and man or a woman and a woman cannot unite. Speaking of the topic, I did read what Miss CA wrote about gay being a choice. I think the tiara being right within grasps did something to her head. In CA her parents taught her that? Come on! Drug use is a choice. Alcoholism is a choice. Getting up in the morning is a choice. Being gay is NOT a choice! How is this progress??? Still a vast majority believe that marriage is between a man and a woman. Perez, get your head out of the toilet or (your gay friends ass), and live in the real world. People are not voting for these legislations to pass in each state, the legislatures are. Just like Oregon when we voted down gay marriage in 2004, the Oregon Legislature found the measure to be unconstitutional and now is against the will of the voters. That is what is happening in each of these states that are supporting gay marriage. It's not the voters who are voting for this piece of crap legislation, its the lobbyists and left-wing governors that want this.

There is a separation of the Church and the state that exist in the United States.Taken from President Obama,"The constitution has not defined marriage".Religions all over the world may consider only that marriage is between man and a woman but in this country,where religious freedom exists,marriage can always be redefined to accommodate the needs of the gay community.
My biggest issue is that more than 50% of marriages fail….including homosexual marriages. Why does Perez not discuss those divorces especialy that lesbian couple that are fighting over child custody rights. One got pregnant so that they could raise a "family" together and now she doesn't want her ex…. the other "mother" of this child to have any custody rights since she has no biological relationship to this child.

Well, a majority of readers of liberally slanted publications believe that marriage should apply to all couples. If you polled Fox readers, or the Washington Post, you would likely find more "civil union" supporters and "no legal recognition" supporters. But you wouldn't say an "overwhelming majority" of Americans felt that way.
I'm for civil unions, by the way. Government has no place in "marriage", only in granting equal rights aka civil unions for all couples.

The Constitution of the US says that states can't deny civil rights to their citizens, and the Supreme Court ruled that marriage is a fundamental civil right decades ago. When the anti-gay marriage laws are held to our legal standards, they fail.

1) Recognition from other states:.. a gay couple can get married iowa… say they move to texas.. that marriage is no longer valid in the eyes of texas law.
2) Immigration: an american citizen who is married can sponsor their non-american spouse to gain citizenship in this county… no so for the gays.
3) taxes: civil unions are not recognized by the federal government so gay couples can't file joint returns or be eligible for the tax breaks or protections the government gives straight married couples.
4) benefits: anything from social security benefits, sick leave, insurance breaks, hospital visitation, medical decision making, adoption of children… that's just to name a few. We all apparently have the right to be ignorant fools though.
