Equality Reigns Supreme!

| Filed under: Gay Gay GayInspirationLGBT

Go New England!!!!!!!!!!!!

This has been such an AMAZING week!

Thursday morning, the Maine Senate passed a marriage equality bill, granting same-sex couples the same rights, privileges and protections that heterosexuals in the state have.

The bill now moves to the House of Representatives for consideration next week.

On Wednesday, the New Hampshire senate also legalized same-sex marriage. Their House already passed it as and the bill is now in the hands of the NH Governor, who has not said whether he will sign, veto or not sign.

Also yesterday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Act, which extends federally protected categories to include sexual orientation and gender identity.

And, this week as a well, new polls show that right now, Americans as a whole are favoring gay marriage by 42%, that's 9% more than just a month ago. An additional 25% are in favor of civil unions.

  2. 2

Blah blah blah why dont you move to Maine so you can marry your dog.

  3. 3

  4. 4

'you should have a different page to put all this stupid political stuff on. i don't care who legalizes it… happy you have rights, not that it's called a marriage.

  5. 5

They're all Mainiacs up there…but they are good and fair people. The Republicans used to have a stranglehold on this place–but no more!!!

  6. 6

    Maine Rocks!

  7. 7

all you negative people can suck my balls

  8. 8

Defenetly moving FORWARD in the RIGHT direction.

  9. 9

This is Maine people…it will never pass.

  10. 10

  11. 11

good for them. it always boggled my mind why gay s weren't allowed the same rights as the rest of us when it's not their fault they were born that way. i mean, don't religious people want couples getting married instead of having multiple partners?

  12. 12

    Progress indeed! =:)

  13. 13

Perez, this is the kind of history YOU are helping to make come true. All those who post criticisms against Perez and his "political" views who are clueless about the struggles and pain leading to such historic and humanitarian advances - get in your thick and shallow brains the fact that a lot of this accelaration towards human freedom and justice came from a brilliant question asked of a dumb "beauty queen" and subsequent dialogue that has brought about these changes. BRAVO PEREZ - we owe so much of this movement to you. Keep the pressure and dialogue rolling. And those who don't want to participate, why are you even on this site??

it doesn't mean jack shit until the federal government does it

    disguisting. Disguisting. Disguisting

  16. 16

YES! It's about time. Our state was bound to pass it soon enough!

  17. 17

its crazy how things are moving so fast

  18. 18

    Fantastic! Great job Maine!

  19. 19

How ironic that about a week after your argument with Miss California all of these things happen…

  20. 20

I'm proud of my fellow New Englanders for looking forward instead of behind.

  21. 21

Yo Blind Baby- you ever been to portland? It's gonna pass!

  22. 22

Does anyone else think it's funny that straight people just have kids without getting married nowadays and gays really want to get married? Idk, I just noticed that, Lol. There's a lot of baby daddy's out there now… nowadays it's normal.

  23. 23

yeehaw. . . .next up. . .TEXAS!!!! well, one can dream.

  24. 24

Still sucks me and my girl would have to move to the north east! Lets have some good news in the South (I seriously mean that! lol) I guess this is a first step though!!!

  25. 25

Finally! I'm so glad that equality is coming! Prop 8 did more good than harm!!!

  26. 26

Re: Vintage7787 – Yes it is LEGALLY a marriage. Whether you like it or not :D

  27. 27

Re: Blind Baby – It passed in Iowa!

  28. 28

Yeah, and you did nothing to help gay rights Perez, just to let you know.

  29. 29

    Re: gavmish
Oh, please. Do you really think progress was made over a silly Miss America pageant question? Please give credit where credit is due…it certainly wasn't all because of Perez.

  30. 30

I love how people post hateful messages about gay marriage on here. They're just upset that public opinion is swaying away from their opinion just like the uptight white people were about interracial marriage. I bet in 5-10 years they'll be so embarrassed that they were against gay marriage they'll pretend that they were always for it. Losers and liars.

  31. 31

I live in Maine I hope it passes!!! =) hehe

  32. 32

  33. 33

    OMG….give it a fn break!!

  34. 34

As Maine goes, so goes the nation. Yeah Maine!!

  35. buck says – reply to this

Re: Barney – Hey Barney, public opinion isn't swaying its the leftist judges that are voting for it and against the people's wishes. With all the whinning Perez is doing he has actually swayed many people in the opposite direction. 70% of the country is for traditional marraige and he good new is there is no discrimination there, any male who finds a nice, wholesome girl and decides to marry is welcomed to do just that.

  36. 36

Re: Nickysue – After you, Nickysue.

  37. 37

Marry - 1. to take as a husband or wife. 2. to unite as husband and wife (from Websters pocket dictionary) Marriage is the noun form of marry.
Because I'm not gay I don't know but is there a husband in the relationship and a wife in the relationship? If not, you can count out marriage being legalized for gays. I don't think courts change the meaning of words……..

  38. 38

well of course legal civil marriages should be allowed! religious ceremonies for marriage in a church though are another thing– that should be up to the church if they want to wed a gay couple or not. after all, church and state are seperate…

  39. 39

Being Gay is a choice and is just plain wrong shame on all you Gay "things"…

  40. 40

Re: Nickysue – What a small minded woman you are. Have you ever even met a gay person?

  41. 41

    yay for being from Maine.
and to the person who said it's Maine and will never pass?
obviously you don't know how liberal we are up here.

  42. 42

    whooo progress

  43. 43

Perez - GET OVER IT… can you please move on to something else instead of your gay marriage hype… you realized it got you attention from the Miss USA pageant, and now you are stuck on it… MOVE ON

  44. 44

Thank you Perez. Keep the pressure on. You are the gay Malcom X.

  45. 45

Boston here and we have had gay marriage since 2004!!! We are rad!!!!

  46. 46

hahaha i live in maine. that's awesome.

  47. tjmzr says – reply to this

new england pwns. nuff said. (:

  48. 48

Perez, normally I would be happy for you, but after the Miss USA thing, YOU CAN SUCK YOUR MOTHERS COCK.

  49. 49

Re: smokeythebitch – Ah, real positive, you ASSHOLE

  50. 50

I am so happy to hear this. People can not tell you whom to like no matter who it is so why should they say whom you can marry. Most people would not pick me or my boyfriend as a spouse but we are in love. Also the church lost the right to say who can get married and not, when the government got the right to sell marriage licenses.

  51. 51

This is AWESOME! America is s~l~o~w~l~y opening its eyes =D

  52. 52

Re: txtch1047 – Well not "forget about" gay marriage until gay people have equal rights in EVERY state.

  53. 53

Re: buck – Only wholesome girls are marriage material, huh? Please, do tell what is the criteria for 'wholesome'?

  54. 54

New Enlgand is awsome. I myslef live in the newengland states, exept nothing happens here ohh well

  55. 55

Yay for my state! ~ Indian Island, ME

  56. 56

Dont listen to the dumbasses posting HATE on ur site, Perez. I'm glad ur making this known because this inequality and ignorance is just unfucking fair. This is the civil rights movement of our times!! These young kids killing themselves out here becuz of pure hatred and fear that they've probably learned from retarded people like these homophobes.. smdh

I FEEL SO BAD IF U NEGATIVE ASS HATERZ HAVE CHILDREN, AND I'D FEEL EVEN WORSE IF THEY WERE GAY. or maybe thats the therapy you assholes need to wake da fuck up.

  57. 57

    Re: b a t k i s s – well for buck it must be his hand

  58. 58

Only because Maine is full of homos! Been there, seen the gay pride flags. Good for them but let's not get excited until the bigger states make a change.

  59. 59

As a Gay California resident, I am ashamed to live here. And we are supposed to be so liberal too! What a joke. EQUALITY FOR ALL!

  60. 60

Wow… this is happening faster than I had ever expected!!!! HOORAY!

  61. 61

I moved to Maine last year because it one of the last states that actually care about it's citizens. Well I guess it proves me right. GO MAINE!

  62. 62

Re: buffymybasset – Come on…move to Maine. We will welcome you with open arms:)

  63. 63

Dude, Give us back God's Rainbow and Holy Matrimony.

I don't give a crap about WHAT hole you stick it in.

  64. 64

Re: Nicole_d – learn to spell.

  65. 65

    I live in Maine :o )

I hope it passes. I know so many people who want it to pass!!!!!

    There is HOPE!

  66. 66

proud to be from Maine baby.

  67. 67

I'm surprised you didn't add Thank to our Miss America smart ass question… cause somehow I find that in your stupid head and with the help of your stupid EGO you think this is all because of you!
I'm glad for those states but I want to wait and see the rates on divorce due to gay marriage…

  68. 68

Seems like a very "GAY" part of the country up there and a very nice place to live…>>hint, hint

  69. 69

I mean, seriously, can we at least think of this as not a right-or-wrong issue, but rather as an economic stimulus for the California economy? Think of all the weddings and consequent jobs that would come out of legalizing gay marriage in CA. Seriously.

  70. 70

Can you shut up already with the gay marriage stuff. You sound like a fool, you're acting like a fool, and you are embarrassing for other gays. You are making yourself more separate and disassociated from society by constantly putting this whole gay vs. straight message out……people are going to make fun of you and knock you down, not because you're gay, but because you're stupid.

  71. 71

    Re: Nickysue – you're hideous.

  72. 72

awesome :) makes me proud to be a New Englander :)

  73. 73

  74. 74

    Re: majestic hope – #8.

  75. 75

Here in Maine its like this… over 3000 people showed up to the Augusta civic center to discuss this with the state senate. The state shot it down once a few years ago, but the Bangor Daily News poll says that it is about 50-50 as far with the majority leaning towards gay marriage!!!I hope it passes, because it is so stupid to let anyone not have their basic right to marry. They let cousins marry in this state legally, why not gays. If I want to marry a beautiful woman someday, then dammit I want that right!

  76. 76

Re: TexasBadBoy – are you hinting that you'd like to move there?

  77. 77

    Maine now supports deviance.

  78. 78

  79. 79

    This is BS.

Gay Marriage is the most absurd concept I have ever heard of.

30 states passed constitutional amendments defining marriage as between a man and woman.

  80. 80

Democrats and people like you are ruining our country.

  81. 81

Maine's movin up in the world, We're no longer close minded hicks…

  82. 82

Re: Nickysue – If anyone was going to marry you,and they wont ,it would be like marrying a dog.'

  83. 83

If the gay community is so confident that the majority of people in this country support gay marriage, why haven't we been allowed to vote on the issue? Why has every state only managed to legalize it through the courts and not by the will of the people? As much as people like to pretend that getting married is a "civil right", the fact remains that in reality it is a social issue like gun control or abortion. The ability to VOTE and decide for ourselves IS a civil right which these judges are denying us by legilating from the bench.

  84. 84

Re: Twoboys2 – You mean looking at each other's behinds?

  85. 85

    Re: The_Greatest_President
Sit back, relax, and accept. Change is happening - SLOWLY.
Might as well stop the hate and get used to it.
The Netherlands, Belgium, Spain and Canada all have nationwide same-sex legalization of marriage.
We WILL join them - sooner or later.
And incidentally, you don't see any of those 4 countries falling apart at the seams. In fact, they are currently more stable than America!

  86. 86

    Proud to be a Mainah!

  87. 87

    Right on!

  88. 88

PEOPLE— be PROUD of YOURSELF and WHOMEVER YOU LOVE! i am a mainer (living abroad in sudamerica) and i am proud to the point of tears. this is so important. love you perez, keep on keepin' on.

  89. 89

I am totally pro equality… but how many more times do I have to read about gay rights on a CELEBRITY blog!!!! If I wanted to read about this then I would go to the GLAAD website! I understand how important this is and am very supportive but c'mon!!! I wanna know if Paris Hilton has syphallis for the third time this year when I come to Perezhilton.com!!!!!!!!!!!!

  90. 90

YAY Maine! hopefully my fellow Mainers will pull through and get this thing passed!

  91. 91

So when my son watches two men kiss or holding hands while walking, I can no longer take the easy route responding with "Because God wanted it that way." As if parenting isn't hard enough already, somehow I'm supposed to tell my child that "marriage" isn't only for a man and a woman, but he might be able to legally "marry" his best childhood friend someday! Yippee!

  92. 92

I am so proud to call myself a native Mainer! I live here in Los Angeles now… funny that my little home state, SO far off the radar of what's 'cool' and 'progressive', could be potentially so far ahead of 'sexy' California. Go Mainiacs!!!!!

  93. 93

Thank You Perez for everything you do. I love to check on here everyday and see something new for human rights. I hope that by the time I want to get married (here in Illinois) that it will be legal. Everyone else….if all you care about is "celebrity news" instead of important current events regarding civil rights then you really are a sad person. I love to hear about crazy lindsay or whatever but these are all important things. Perez! please come hang out with my friends and me in Chicago!!!!!! We love you!

  94. 94

    Re: ughhhhhh

um….why do people who arent gay keep saying that the gay community does not like perez? can you read minds?? seriously stop talking shit.

  95. 95

let gays be JUST as miserable married as breeders!!!Im Single to mingle….

  96. 96

This is wonderful news, I'm so happy to hear it even though I am in Canada. It's great that the United States are progressing, and it would mean the world to me if the majority of the Western world was 'comfortable' with homosexuality (why wouldn't they be? come on and wake up guys!)

  97. 97

Holy crap. I live in New England, CT. The gays are getting closer. >.

  98. 98

Proud to be a NEW ENGLANDAH

  99. Laxer says – reply to this
