Equality California has just sent out an email blast alerting all their supporters that the California Supreme Court will issue its ruling on the Prop 8 legal challenge "any day now."
Hopefully they will do the right thing!

I'm all for equality, but didn't the people of California already vote and decide not to allow gay "marriage"? Shouldn't democracy have a say or it that only when it suits your cause or point of view? Maybe the gay community needs to find an alternative to marriage or wait it out until the majority approves, instead of trying to overturn democracy!

I am so tired of people thinking they should be able to vote on any ones civil rights!! Marriage is just that a civil right, not a privilege for heterosexuals. Last time i checked civil rights were not voted on by the majority but by the government, the majority didn't vote on womens rights or blacks rights…Oh wait that was because at that time women nor blacks could vote so because gays can vote our fate has to be left in the hands of a majority that will not vote based on the rights that our fore fathers based this great country on instead they will vote based on their own opinions and beliefs and that is not right!

"do the right thing"… do you even know what they're looking at? if the people of california passed a proposition by following proper legal procedures, there isn't anything the supreme court can do to change it. if the people who support gay marriage had the votes, it wouldn't have passed in the first place. the supreme court can't impose its own opinion on the people who have already decided how they want their state to run. those that disagree have to follow legal procedures to overturn this proposition- or move. so annoying your uneducated cursory flippant remarks- 'do the right thing'… you really should be more educated if you're going to make comments about this legal procedure. really- it's embarrassing to read such an ignorant statement.

The Supreme Court has repeatedly stated this. When it comes to rights that already exist, I agree, modification should not be up to the whims of the people. But what we're talking about here is the creation of new rights, and that most definitely should be left to the people. In fact, the principles of separation of powers demand it.

Yes, hopefully the California Supreme court will do the right thing and uphold the law. I'm all for gay marriage but I am not for the court messing with the will of the people. The people of California have spoken, and according to their constitution, properly amended their constitution. The only way to change that is with another constitutional amendment overturning this last one. You can't be for democracy and hope that the court does something completely undemocratic just because it would be in your favor.
