Get Your Kleenex Ready!

Such a moving story!

Connie Culp is a survivor - and an inspiration.

Four years ago, the Hopedale, Ohio, resident was shot in the face by her husband. How unimaginably horrible!

Four four years, she had no nose. The bony structure that once supported her face was gone, as was most of her face. She could not breathe other than through a tracheotomy, could not smell, could not even drink or eat normally.

Several dozen reconstructive surgeries didn't help much.

Then, this past December, Connie became the first person in the world to receive a full face transplant.

Surgeons removed not just the skin, but the bony structures underneath, the nerves, facial muscles, lower eyelids, the palate from a local donor and in a 22 hour surgery attached the donor face to Connie.

On Tuesday May 5th, Connie and her new face addressed the world for the first time.

Doctors say the facial nerves that they reattached will slowly regenerate, giving her the ability to show emotion. Connie is able to smell and taste again, she can drink coffee from a cup, and breathe from her new nose. Specialists say her pain, which was constant before is nearly gone.

Watch her speak above and click here to read more about her inspiring story!

    Beautiful courageous woman…

  7. 7

What type of sick animal does that to someone? I believe when you do something that barbaric you should have the same thing done to you. That's one thing those middle eastern people got right.

  8. 8

    FIRST

  9. 9

It just goes to show you that stuff like this happens to people EVERYDAY. The is an example of technology at it's best. Stay strong Connie!

  17. 17

not the world's first full face transplant… please get your facts right!

  18. 18

What an amazing, strong woman. I commend her on her bravery to step up and tell the world what happened to her and how she didn't let it take her life away. Miss Culp, you are true inspiration among these pages of swine.

  19. 19

I wish there were subtitles… its hard to understand her

  20. 20

God Bless! I can't believe her husband only got 7 years in jail.

Re: agelades – actually yah I think it is the first FULL face transplant. the french woman you're thinking about had a partial transplant.

  28. 28

Poor lady. I'm glad doctors could find a way to help her live a more normal and comfortable life. I wish her much happiness.

  29. 29

After 6 years I changed careers from a luxury world to the non profit health care industry in order to fulfill my need of being a part of something much needed and a good cause. It is at times difficult as any job though. As it is a business and has it's own politics. This story along with the many stories out there are the ones that reminds us all within the industry of being a part of huge network that makes a difference one at a time. Thanks for the highlight Perez and as always thanks for the entertainment and fresh news.

    Best,
    Bella

  30. 30

Touching? Inspirational? Bullshit! Lemme tell ya, Connie Culp lives VERY close to me, and I remember when this story was covered by the local news stations. After her husband's sentencing, she asked to talk to him in private. When she came back, she said that he'd better "put her on a pedestal once he's released from prison."

How you gonna stay with the dude that took your WHOLE FACE OFF? Jesus.

  31. 31

Re: RedWingsFan – Go Wings, fuck those Ducks!

  32. 32

duuuuuuude. i would never leave the house again.

  33. 33

Re: agelades – Actually, yes it is. The others were partial transplants and did not include reconstructing the bony structure supporting the face. Get YOUR facts right.

  34. 34

    Re: agelades

It is the world's first FULL faceplant. All the other faceplants have been partial (look it up).

  35. 35

Very wise words, "Don't judge people who don't look the same as you do."

She said that a couple of times.

The truth is each of us has our own story. Nobody knows the complete circumstances occurring in each of our individual lives.

What does this teach you, Mario?

  36. 36

There is a special place in hell for her husband.

  37. 37

    JEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZ.

When I first saw it, I thought someone had used that 'Face Warp' application in the video!!! :S

Now I feel a little bad for saying that out loud.

    But this is very touching…

definitely alot stronger then i'd be if that happened to me

    39

Wow thats really sad I wonder what happened to the bastard that shot her?

  40. 40

No, she is the first person in the NATION to receive a facial transplant.

  41. 41

Cadaver-face? Oh no please no. But I guess it's better than having no face at all, I just can't deal with the CADAVER-face, I'd feel like ripping it off.

  42. 42

I'm such a horrible person. When I first saw her face, I went "EWH!" but I deeply, deeply apologize for that. It was very unacceptable of me to do that. Anyway, God Bless her. That is extremely sad but I'm happy that she was able to recover.

  43. 43

Oh yeah, I'm getting my tissues out!

Those Goombas from Super Mario Brothers are HOT!

Bless her. Times like this I wish we had the eye for an eye law… her "husband" should be brutally tortured. I do hope they can take care of the severe swelling in her lower face and neck area. She look very "normal" from the nose and upward. Poor thing.

  46. 46

That totally puts life into perspective. Connie is an amazing person and her doctors are incredible - so inspiring! I wish her all the luck, joy and happiness in the world and the same to her wonderful Doctors and staff.

  47. 47

    Re: Stool Sample

It's people like you who ruin everything… and what exactly do YOU look like, eh? Are you fat, do you have a big nose, squinty eyes, acne, bad breath, are you even college educated? Seriously, there's a time and place for jokes… I'm all about the jokes… but this is totally not that time. Do you even have a a family? Imagine this was your mom, sister, daughter…

  48. 48

These sort of situations are what cosmetic surgery are for, not shallow fuckheads who want bigger boobs and 'to look younger'.

What a sad story. Another reasons why I am against guns!

  49. 49

Re: Stool Sample – Your name says it all…

  50. 50

God love her! She should be the poster child for Spousal Abuse, not celebrities!! She is a true hero!!

  51. 51

God love her! She should be face of Spousal Abuse, not celebrities!! She is a true hero!!

  52. 52

Poor lady. I could barely understand her though :(

  53. 53

may she continues to heal and thrive
    God bless her!

  54. 54

i applaud this woman on her courage and bravery
    this is amazing.

  55. 55

I rather die then look like that

  56. 56

I wonder why the cadavar face was so big? It looks huge on her. This is just terrible

  57. 57

    what a wonderful story

  58. 58

Just my opinion, but honest to god, I would rather be dead then to go through that! I give her a lot of credit to carry on after all that.

  59. 59

wow i can't believe the results she looks fantastic, i remember reading about the face transplant when it happened. the doctors have done a great job of making sure she heals both inside and out. lovely lady.

  60. 60

    Re: buffymybasset

It's not that the face was to big, she is probably on large doses of prednisone, which give people that "moonface" look.

  61. 61

Whats with these fckn violent hetros and their assaults on their wives ,shame what fckng scumbags.

  62. 62

  65. 65

This woman is amazing. That's a true hero. You go Connie!

  66. 66

I lived right down the road from this lady. The douche that shot her was her husband!!!!!

  67. chlyn says – reply to this

    67

I was in tears, thinking that this woman is a walking miracle. Think about it - how is she able to talk, using the facial muscles of another person? How is she able to smell? It's amazing that nerves get reconnected to make those things possible. And she got a beautiful nose in the bargain. :)

  68. 68

I bet she gives an awesome blow job!

  69. 69

I would do her if she wore a bag over her face.

  70. 70

She should get huge breast implants so people don't look at her mush mouth face.

    ARE U READING THIS RIHANNA?!

  73. 73

Really puts our lives into perspective — stuff like this can happen to anyone. Amazing woman, really inspirational.

  74. 74

I cant watch shit like this.

  75. MP says – reply to this

    75

That's amazing. I hope science soon advances to the point where they're able to re-grow our own skin so there will be no anti-rejection drugs involved. I hope that woman has a happy life and continues to improve. What ever happened to the husband?

  76. 76

    Amazing. God bless her.

  77. 77

good for her!!! we need to have much stronger penalties for violent ex husbands!! as in, i dont know, the death penalty??
this is an epidemic in america- and its about time we start ADDRESSING IT!!!!!
go connie- you are representing tons of women scared of their ex-husbands!!!!

  78. 78

You people who think she's going to look like that forever are retarded. She still has 2 years and multiple surgeries left before she'll look somewhat "normal." And they didn't just take the whole face of someone else and transfer it to her. They took different PIECES of the face to construct what you see now. This is NOT what the other person looked like! Jeeez…

  79. 79

Re: Mickey7 – actually, it still isn't. I wasn't referring to Isabelle Dinoire who had a partial face transplant, I was referring to Pascal Coler who in March of 2008 had the world's full face transplant, bringing Connie Culp to a close second. I HAVE gotten my facts right.

  80. 80

Moving story, but her face is revolting to look at

  81. 81

    Re: smh@ppl – I agree 100%

  82. 82

Wow. She should kick his ass for doing that to her.

  83. 83

After her husband shot her, he shot himself, but he also lived. He got 7 years in prison and she says she is still in love with him and forgives him. She would go for walks and in our neighborhood and have a vale covering her face, it was so sad and she is a very nice lady. I wish her the best.

  84. 84

Just so everyone knows…she is gonna get more surgeries to remove the excess skin on her face and as time goes by the facial muscles and nerves will work better so she will be able to move her face more and look normal.

  85. 85

Best wishes to her. I'm glad and hope we all learn some compassion from her story.

Like Ms California, Carrie PreCum, it's not what's outside that matters. It's not how fucking big your breast implants are, or if the slit in your dress stops just below your clit, it's your heart.

  86. 86

This is heartbreaking but she is super courageous….btw Perez, she was the 4th, not 1st…i got that from the real news.

  87. 87

Made me cry when I saw it on the news. And I was at the gym. Felt like a dork, then looked over at the woman on the elliptical trainer next to me, who was watching the same channel, and she was wiping her eyes.

  88. 88

she's the FOURTH in the world. the first in the US Perezzle..

  89. 89

AMAZING how God can give us hope when we think some things are impossible.

  90. 90

OMFG i hope that bastard rot in hell

  91. 91

her husband only got 7 yrs for doing this to her.

  92. 92

    Re: Pocket24 – for real?????!!!!!!!!

  93. 93

Poor woman, her husband is a fucking douchelicking bastard shit-eating son of a bitch!

  94. 94

But in the movie Nicholas Cage came out looking like John Travolta!
She should schedule a trip to easter island at some point and pose.

  95. 95

theyre going to remove excess skin… the reason there is so much skin on her face is that due to the likelihood that her body was going to reject the donor skin. but she is doing fine! :)

  96. 96

she was actually the second perez. the first was isabelle from france

  97. 97

Re: agelades – true. there was one in england a few years ago for a lady who was mauled by her dog.

this is very sad though and i'm so happy that this woman was able to get the surgery. hope she continues to do well!

  98. 98

Her husband shot her in the face and is only servng 7 years in prison. That is sad. What about the agony she has gone thur and will continue to go through.

  99. 99

It's awful how someone would hurt her!! bad people in this world…… she is a lucky survivor…
    very inspirational!

  100. 100

    BRAVO, CONNIE! STAY STRONG.
