As if Dolly Parton wasn't already fabulous, she can now add a PHD to her list of accomplishments.
Our favorite country diva received her honory degree in humane and musical letters from University of Tennessee in Knoxville. The audience of 1,069 new graduates from the College of Arts and Sciences gave Parton a rightly deserved standing ovation.
Dolly was thrilled and even made a quip or two in her acceptance speech:
"So when people say something about 'Double-D,' they will be thinking of something entirely different."

Dr.????? I hate these honorary degrees! I worked for YEARS for my degree and people in Hollywood are just passed one on a silver platter!
i love her, but shit - enough with the plastic surgery. her face looks atrocious.
What a frightening photo~she looks like one of the undead from the movie. I think that lots of plastic surgeons should be sued how they turn out people looking like this. This is terrible, not human at all.

I've never understood these honorary degrees. People work very hard for their degrees, especially doctoral students and schools hand them out to celebrities like jelly beans. Most celebrities haven't even been to college. They only deserve a degree they've worked for.
I'm surprised it's her first one. She has a wagon load of medals, honors and awards including your national "living legend medal". Honorary degrees are useless. By the time you qualify for one you don't need paper to get work. They are a nice way universities recognize major achievement and stir up a lot of great press. Honorary degree holders often endow their schools as well. So all you sour grape alumni…Get off your ass, get rich and famous because you can't have too many magazine covers or fancy certificates.
I love her but I really don't understand the honorary degree thing. I think it is kinda dumb. Maybe they should give honorary degrees to everyone! Maybe that is next on Obama's agenda!

For all of you clearly uneducated people. The honorary degree is given to people who have spent a lifetime in the field and have produced work that is equal to or surpasses that which they may ave done had the attended the school.
I am a graduate student. So, for all of you fakers trying to pretend that it is such hard work, no it is not. One can scheme, lie, cheat and skate through graduate work like never before. Doctors are a dime a dozen. Dolly Parton has worked harder in her lifetime than I ever have or probably ever will. People like her are special and rare. She deserves it more than most doctors out there. Most doctors will never produce the amount of work this woman has.
So, get over yourself and before you spout off about it, go actually learn about the history if doctoral degrees…because they were not always 5 years of coursework and a dissertation. That is the money machine and has little to do with intellectual contribution to society.
This kind of shit kind of pisses me off! I mean, some of us actually have to work hard, earn, not to mention pay good money for an education. I don't hate Dolly, but this shit pisses me off every time some effing celebrity gets an "honorary" degree (esp. that bitch Oprah) cuz they're too busy to go to college like the rest of us!

Dolly Parton is a gift for all of us to enjoy the rest of our lives. She is awesome. Thank you Perez for loving her as much as we do here in her hometown. She has done so much for this area….she has provided jobs for the county at Dollywood and speaks of our beautiful area wherever she goes…I remember years ago when she was "leaving" country music…she said even then that she would never leave country–she would take it with her wherever she went. And she has. God bless Dolly Parton and all of the good people like her! this world needs more people like Ms. Dolly Rebecca Parton Dean!

Re: Mrs Roberta Pattinson – Wrong again. People get honorary degrees all of the time that you don't hear about because they're not that famous. Your logic is flawed…If Mr. Schmoe did more, he would be more well known, even if it was within a smaller community. He would therefore be a candidate for this honorary degree. That is the very nature of it. Authors get it. Business people get it. And cute country singers from Tennessee who have contributed more to society than you will ever dream of being capable of doing get it.
And again, since ya'll missed it…the very purpose of an honorary degree is to give it to someone who has contributed a body of work to their field which is equal to or surpasses that which they would have had they attended the school. It is not always perfect, but in this case, it is well deserved.
You all know school is a complete joke today. I would much rather have the real world experience Dolly has than the bullshit one encounters during their 4 to 10 years of soul sucking "education" at a "professional" institution.
But the fact is, I am not as talented or gifted as this woman is and had to go to school. And neither are any of you. So, hit the books kids.

Without her themepark and other businesses thousands of people would be out of jobs. On top of that her literacy organization has given out over 20 million books to children across the US.
