"You know that cover that Kate Winslet did for Vanity Fair recently, where she said, ‘You bet your ass I want that Oscar’? Well, it’s the same with me. I’m not going to be like, ‘I just want to be known for my work.’ No, I want that golden statue on my shelf. Whether it happens or not, it will not determine the kind of substance that I feel I contributed. But I want it… Shoot for the stars and I’ll settle for a cloud."

- Star Trek star Zoe Saldana tells the new issue of Latina Magazine

I dont know who the hell she is, but at least she is honest…all stars think that way and want an oscar and they are bullshitting themselves and everyone else when they say they dont care if they win that its just an honor to be nominated….Yeah, i know how much i'd pay 50G's or more for a dress and all the shit they go thru just so i can be nominated…yeah riiiight!

  2. 2

Ummm, never heard of Zoe Saldana, but being she is latina, I'm sure you'll be posting a lot of shit about her Mario.

  3. 3

120 reasons to love being a latina - 1. Anchor baby 2. Food stamps 3. Housing assistance

since when penelope cruz is latina??
she's spanish aka european aka caucasian
they should have taken jessica 'don't call me latina' alba instead (or at least eva longoria)

  6. 6

Not starring in Star Trek, you'll be Uhura 2.0 for the rest of your life.

Now, get ready to attend nerd conventions for the next 30 years.

  7. 7

Re: *stars101* – agreed. Penelope Cruz is Spanish, therefore European. That Latina magazine looks like crap. 'West Side Story 2.0" - talk about scraping the bottom of the barrel.

  8. 8

    Re: *stars101*
she's from spain but she is not all that white, there are plenty of people of latin american orgin who are lighter than her.

  9. 9

So wait a minute wasnt she posing as a black women in Guess Who with Aston Kuctcher what ever his name is…

She can get away with black roles and latina roles..

Latina or Latino is a person who speaks Spanish or your language is derived from latin.
btw latino in USA, is used to refer to all the countries whose languages derived from Latin (Romance), which includes Spain, France, Italy, Portugal, Romania and others.

    Re: Futuredoc
Let me school you. Part 1: Penelope is still Hispanic and Latina you dumb ass where the do you think the word Hispanic comes from: Hispanic (Spanish: hispano, hispánico) is a term that historically denoted relation to the ancient Hispania (geographically coinciding with the Iberian Peninsula for those who don't know the Iberian Peninsula includes fucking Portugal too). During the Modern Era, it took on a more limited meaning relating to the contemporary nation of Spain.
Back to the Iberian thing, why do you think a lot of universities call their literature programs: IBERIAN STUDIES, IBERIAN LITERATURE, and even in mexico there is the Universidad iberoamericana obviosly an older term for latin american but the point being IBERIA SPAIN & PORTUGAL

    Re: BRIGHTON…
there is no getting away with anything, she is latina which can mean all sorts of things and multiple identities. It is not a contradiction to be Latino which includes African heritage you can say your Latino which encompasses European, native American and African identities there is no contradiction or need to get away with anything. Have you ever seen baseball players??? I know one who is in the news right now MANNY RAMÍREZ, he is Latin and with in that he is black. So what??? He is latino, punto. There are a multitude of Latinos of African descent who are of varying shades Zoe is of Dominican decsent first of all. The Dominican Republic is part of the Spanish speaking carribean which includes Cuba and Puerto Rico in all cases there are blacks, mulattoes, and everything kind of mixture in between.
    FYI FYI Public Service announcement
There are Black people and mixed blacks in Latin American
All over, not just in the carribean, but in Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama and the list goes on. FYI FYI Public Service amount. Public Service Announcement Latin America is a multicultural and multiracial society.

    Re: *stars101*
Also, to be Latin can mean linguistically, from Latin America, but also all of the latin languages and Romans are the original Latins. Here all all of the Latin/Romance languages that would qualify:
Latin (Illa) Claudit semper fenestram antequam cenat.
and the list goes on and on get a clue

    Re: *stars101*Re: *stars101*
Also alot of Spanish people, literally from Spain, especially in the south have mixed blood too because the Arabs and Moors ruled Spain
for 800 fucking years so they are not all that fucking pale dumb ass. Those in the north are mixed with celtic (galacia) influence and those towards the pyreene have a lot of french influence hence fucking catala.
Spain is geografically in Europe but it has a lot of layers its not nordic, blonde hair blue eyes anlgo saxon. It has had a lot of invaders North Africa, the Middle East, Romans, Celtic, and so on. So not everyone looks the same. Also there are other dialects and languages spoken in Spain.
Just like Latin American, there are many layers and races like I have already said earlier.
    People are ignorant.
    I'm out.

Re: *stars101* – Penelope doesn't get all that many roles,
Vanilla Sky was just the English version of the Spanish version of
Abre los Ojos. I think that the issue is there aren't that many roles period for Hispanics in American Films. But in the case of Spain they have built up there own cinema almost single handedly thanks to the great Pedro Almodóvar. Penelope has and still does the majority of her films in Spanish. She got her first oscer nod for fucking Volver and she won for a movie about Spain, with another powerhouse Spanish actor Javier Bardem. Woody Allen, an American director, romanticizes spanish cinema in this film so its kind a nod to that genre of film. I like how Spain has built up their own cinema.
Mexico has as well , look at Guillermo del Toro, Alfonso Cuarón and Alejandro González Iñárritu. These three churn out great films that win awards on an international level. . I like all of these people because they create their own opportunities in an unconventional way outside of Hollywood.
If there is a lack of roles create your own roles.
If you don't like the game create your own game.

    Re: *stars101*
BAAAAAAAAAAAD example because she is from the country of origin which is SPAIN. So Latin as Spanish that's not like being from Mozambique.
It's a question of nationality where you were born vs identity and heredity
Penelope's = latina has way more validty than Mozambique = Latin.
The African thing is way off. I was referring to blacks in Latin America and how Latin America is multiracial and multicultural.
Spanish people, as in from Spain, being called Latin is completely accurate.
Spanish is a latin language, Spanish comes from Spain via vulgar latin.
The Romans brought the world Latin they introduced it to the world.
Spain = Latino is 100% on vs. mozamique = latino
Mozambique was a colony but they gained their independence and they still speak portugues but your example is all backward. But let me check you though because just like there were Criollos is Latin America, there are people in Mozambique who have direct portuguese heritage: peep John Kerry's wife
Teresa Kerry she has a mozambique nationality Maria Teresa Thierstein Simões Ferreira aka Mrs. Kerry, has a identity and heredity that is portugues
    and now throw in American.

    Re: *stars101*
    You have a geography problem.
I never said anything about being from South America
You mentioned J-Lo but ooopsy she is from the Bronx, NY in AMERICA, the US of A baby.
and does she really speak Spainsh have you heard her speak Spanish…it's Spanish-like I guess.
Getting back to your whole South American as Latino thing you left out a few places and possibilities mainly Central America, and MEXICO and the CARIBBEAN (we need to include Cuba, Puerto Rico and one half of Hispañola aka the Dominican Republic).
Like I said nationality vs identity and heredity.
J-lo is an full out American Citizen, further all Puerto Ricans automatically get limited citizenship minus voting rights etc..
With J-lo its heredity, her lineage traces back to PR, because her PARENTS are from there. Within that she identifies as being Nuyorican a new hybrid identity that more acuratly describes her. Remember the whole debate b/w her and Salam Hayek who has publicly stated that J-lo isn't exactly a latina because she wasn't born in Latin America/Iberia. I disagree because its a question of roots, if your parents are from there, then you have origins there as well.

  21. 21

    Re: *stars101*
no one said Penelope was South American
your making stuff up now silly :)

  22. 22

Latino is used to describe Latin American countries, particulartly, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Cuba and Venenzuela. They are mixed of many cultures, spanish, italian, french, middle eastern, indian and african. It's that combination that has created the Latin culture that we now. A latin person can be as white as Cameron Diaz and a black as Celia Cruz. Penelope is Spanish… she's European or hispanic. Whether spanish people are considered white ust like Italians is debatable to me. They might be accepted as white but they are not white. They are mixed with middle eastern and gypsies and if you dig deep they have african blood in them.

    Re: ChinaPR
Thank you!!!!! Finally some one who can read and who has common sense.
Preach! I couldn't agree more. Can you believe some of these dumb butts on this site. Latin America would not be Latin with out the people that invaded the region. It would be indigenous/native American still. There would be no Spanish anything if the conquistadors and company didn't invade and terrorize the vast region of what is now called Latin America. People get so caught up on labels but they are made up and very recent phenomenas. 100 years from now, the region may be called something totally different but thats not the point. How the hell can you dismiss the ORIGINAL people.
That would be like saying Native Americans are not Native American
Spanish people from Spain are Spanish, and Hispanic obviously, and Latin.
period. They fucking brought the language to Latin America….duh.
If not then we'd still have Aztecs etc… but we don't we have a many races and geographies that fall under the term Latino, punto!!!
    Thanks ChinaPR you rock!!!!

    Re: *stars101*
    WOOOOOOOOW
Where do I begin. Can we straighten out one thing first? Why do you keep insisting that now to be latino/a you have to have been born in South America….again you have a geography problem. You are missing the rest of the region CENTRAL AMERICA, MEXICO and the CARIBBEAN.
Why do you keep limiting this to South America what is that about.
So now you discount Panama, Costa Rica etc… ?? What is wrong with you??
Also, to go back to one of your earlier acid trips mainly J-Lo once again if you insist on limiting this thing to SOUTH AMERICA….then how do you figure J-lo fits into that definition….she's not from South America, HER PARENTS ARE NOT FROM SOUTH AMERICA….so how do you figure the mess you were saying earlier.
You NEED TO LOOK AT A MAP and YOU NEED TO STUDY THE ORIGIN OF LATIN. More importantly read a MAAAAAAAAAAAAP dumb butt.
    :)
Can you even name me three countries that are in South America, do you know what Latin America as a whole is, what is it composed of?
I think you are way off and you need to pick up a MAAAAAAP.
Finally, as I said eariler, these terms are made up terms, countries are made up and lines are redrawn. In 50 years we won't be using the same terms because identities are always shifting. But you don't even know the basic roots of ANYTHING to begin with.
    punto!

Can you believe how ignorant people are on this site?

  33. 33

    Re: *stars101*Re: *stars101*
    umm…..
Wow the main thing I want to address in this tirade is that
    Latina is not South American.
I never said Penelope Cruz is claiming to be South American and by putting her name or including her in Latina Magazine, that somehow she is claiming to be SOUTH American. You have a geography problem.
On many levels, outside of US census racial categories, outside of that mode of thinking it is not a crazy idea to include a Spanish actress in a Latina magazine. It never was because she is Spanish, Hispanic or Latina.
So, if there was a Costa Rican Actress or a Mexican Actress you wouldn't put them in Latina Magazine they are not from South America?
What if they are US born but their parents are from a Spanish speaking country? Also what if there was an actress from Suriname, it's in South America, they don't Speak Spanish so are they not allowed to be in Latina.
What is Latino/a what does it mean in the US and what does it mean outside of the US?

  34. 34

Re: kenyat – let it go *stars101* is an idiot! she lives on perezhilton, I don't mean posts frequently or from time to time like most, she's ALWAYS ON THE SITE attacking people then says they attack when they say something back!!!!! complete nutso, dufus, moron! 35. 35

    Re: *stars101*
    Oh you're just plain dumb.
Mexico and Panama are not a part of South America.
Mexico is a part of North America which includes Canada, the United States of America. Again North America is Canada, the USA and México.
Panama is a part of Central America.
    Did you graduate from Highschool?
Wow what is this country producing these days?
    Education reform ASAP! lol :)

latina is used to address latin america women (south america) if other women speak similar language doesn't make everyone latina.
in america people speak english, this doesn't make them european
in morocco most people speak french and this doesn't make them european nor latino either.
I agree penelope cruz is perfect for latina roles and a very beautiful woman but just because she speaks spanish it doesn't make her latina. most of people in spain are a lot whiter than her
you can't apply a race to someone who is not by just looking at their skin and language, this is a misconception

    Re: *stars101*

No one is saying that Penelope Cruz isn't European, nor are they saying that she's not Spanish. She has a European passport because that's the continent she lives on and is from. There is no such thing as a "Latin" passport because it isn't a place. A Latina/Latino is a member of any of the Latin peoples, or those speaking chiefly Romance languages, *esp. a native of or émigré from Latin America; a person of Spanish-speaking decent. A Latin person, while in their Latin country would not refer to themselves as a Latina or Latino because it is too broad a term and encompasses many. They would refer to themselves as Spanish, Dominican, Costa Rican, etc.
The term has nothing to do with color of skin either. It does however have to do with language and heritage. Although the term is often and mostly used here in reference to someone of South American decent it is not exclusive to them.
