Leo And Kate Keep Titanic Survivor Afloat

When James Cameron's Titanic came out, the film grossed over $1 billion dollars and made stars Leonardo Dicaprio and Kate Winslet household names. Now, over a decade later, the cast and the famed director are giving back to the last remaining link to the 1912 tragedy: 98 year old survivor Millvina Dean.
At the time the famous boat sank, Dean was only nine weeks old, and now she is struggling to keep herself healthy and financially afloat. Irish author and photographer Don Mullan publicly challenged the Hollywood stars to help the woman, who desperately needed money for her care. Without hesitation, Cameron, DiCaprio, and Winslet contributed to a $30,000 fund which will ensure Millvina is financially secure for the rest of her days.

I have no problem with charity… I'm all for it. But, I 100% do not believe in making people out to be something they are not. And, in my opinion, there donation is equal to me donating my clothes to Goodwill. I am middle class… I work and go to school… I'm not paid millions per movie so I refuse to act like these people are saints.

I think the amount they gave was appropriate. If everyone who is in a crisis and somehow connected to one of their movies appealed to them for money… they'd be as poor as the rest of us! Kate Winslet received 1 million dollars for Titanic, because she was not a well known actress at the time. She also did not get any percentage of the box office success. Both Kate and Leonardo donate often to charities.

I saw an article on Millvina Dean a few months ago where she was at the point of selling her Titanic mementos because she couldn't pay for the nursing home she's living in. She said her costs were about $3,000 a week, so $30,000 won't get her too far. Dicaprio and Winslet I will excuse, but Mr. Cameron - 'Titanic' made you MILLIONS. Millvina is the LAST LIVING SURVIVOR. If that was your mother I'm sure you'd be forking out a hell of a lot more than $3,000 a week.
