The California Senate has just passed legislation that creates Harvey Milk Day in California in honor of the state's first openly gay elected official.

The slain civil rights leader will be honored yearly on May 22nd, his birthday.

“Harvey Milk is an inspiration to Californians who believe in fairness and equality,” says Senator Mark Leno (D-San Francisco), who authored the bill. “He fought for many of the issues we value today, including access to education, public transportation, affordable housing and protecting the environment. Harvey Milk gave his life for what he believed in, and with that courage and sacrifice he gave hope to an entire generation of gay and lesbian people whose basic humanity and freedom had been denied and dishonored."

Harvey Milk settled in the Castro district of San Francisco in 1972, where he and his partner opened a camera store. Fives years later, Milk became the first openly gay man elected to public office in California and only the third openly gay elected official in the nation.

During his short political career, Milk fought for social change and championed many issues, including access to education, affordable public transportation, low-income housing and civil rights. His fundamental belief that all people should be treated with respect paved the way for the populist movement he pioneered for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights. His legacy continues to inspire the LGBT community to this day.

Milk, who was a San Francisco Supervisor, and San Francisco Mayor George Moscone were assassinated on November 27, 1978.

May 22, 2009 marks what would have been Harvey Milk’s 79th birthday.

Harvey Milk was a pioneer for gay rights, and I'm glad California is recognizing him! =). now if they could only overturn prop 8 FOR GOOD.

    4. 4

Same day as Gay Day at Great America, just about 50 miles south of San Francisco!

Re: trimspa – I'm sure you know all about trimspa and when David Duke's birthday is. I cant just tell.

    10. 10

Milk is someone that Gay Rights activist should emulate. Not Perez since he's a horrible example of a good activist. Speaking of how horrible Pervez is, FOX News announced that Carrie "PAWG" Prejean is going to do a guest host spot on FOX & Friends. Great going there Perez, you jump-started her career.

    11. 11

ohh goody goody gumdrops and all that fun gay shit, now back to work

    12. 12

awesome. he was an inspiration and a hero.

    13. 13

Re: I_BEAT_QUEERS – What a fucking ignorant asshole you are. AIDS is NOT a gay disease. African Americans are getting infected at a higher rate than gays and that is a FACT! Look at Africa are the people getting infected there gay?

    14. 14

He was a civil rights pioneer? I don't think so …..

harvey milk- was a TRUE gay and civil rights activist and a decent human being to EVERYONE. you could learn a thing or two from him pee pee…but i'm guessing you never will.

    16. 16

We studied Harvey Milk this year and the coolest thing about him was how he went against the grain and stood for himself and other people's rights. It was very unpopular at the time and he was the first to speak and also spoke to those who you'd think wouldn't listen. He made people think about discrimination and intolerance. I am glad there is a day to honor him.

It's very sad - I hope Miss California has seen the movie MILK and sees how much she is like another beauty queen who hated gays - Anita Bryant.

Re: I_BEAT_QUEERS – first of all, aids is not a gay disease…anyone can get it you idiot. and second of all, if it was a gay diesase, perez would never acquire it or pass it on because there's no one on this planet who would stick their dick in his fat smelly ass. as for you…well, your comment speaks for itself.

this makes me want to move to california!! my birthday is May 22nd =) always wanted my birthday to be a "holiday" sharing it with a great man like harvey milk just makes it even better!!

    19. 19

"Milk" was one of my favorite movies last year.
Harvey was an interesting & influential character.

    20. 20

      Re: I_BEAT_QUEERS
      Ignorance is thy name ..

    21. 21

a lot of people stand up for ALL rights! this is bullshit

    22. 22

Re: KOOL KID – you're only pro gay and ignore all others and their agendas! Gays are not the only Americans! …nor are they the only to be persecuted! Grow up little boy many others have been discriminated against and are still ignored NOT just gays! you seek equality for one group but neglect others…….hence YOU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM!

    23. 23

Harvey Milk was and still is, not just an inspiration for the gay community, but through his fight for civil rights -every human being that ever walked and will walk the earth.

It's dedicated people like him that change the world into a better place. May the memory of him or anyone who fights for justice, never be forgotten.

    24. 24

Let's all meet and dump twinkies on the lawn of the state capitol.

    25. 25

WHY ARE SOME PEOPLE TALKING MAD AMOUNTS OF SHIT. I CANNOT BELIVE THIS ASS SAID AIDS COMES FROM GAY PEOPLE.———————-ARE YOU IN ANY WAY RELATED TO THAT ASS MISS CALIFORNIA????? SHE IS ANOTHER ONE WHO WOULD SAY SOME STUPID SHIT LIKE THAT. YOU REALLY NEED TO GET INFORMED ABOUT THE FACT'S. INSTEAD OF BEING HERE ON THIS SIGHT YOU NEED TO LOOK FOR INFORMATION ON MEDICAL WEB SIGHTS TO GET YOUR SHIT CORRECTED.

    26. 26

Dayum. The resemblence between Milk and Sean Penn is amazing.

    27. 27

I recently saw Milk, and I have to say, it was a wonderful movie. I'm a straight, 15-year-old high school student who can appreciate the important subjects he pushed. He was a wonderful man, and a wonderful politician. And anyone who said he just pushed for gay rights, read the post over again. "Milk fought for social change and championed many issues, including access to education, affordable public transportation, low-income housing and civil rights." what is so wrong with that? it's amazing someone who really tried to do something for the world is being recognized. :)

    28. 28

enjoy your official "let's fuck dues in the ass" day!

    29. 29

Perez. I luv u to death. Been following u since day one. But, U are really pushing the Gay thing. It's cool, no prob. But please remember the majority of the population is not gay and we don't need to be constantly reminded of your "gayness". That's cool, ur bus, but OMG let it go. Miss CA said her beliefs, as do u. So why judge when u are no different. Be Gay, Be Happy, and STOP the gay, gay, gayness campaign. Luv u no matter what, but u really need to reflect and look at urself. U are all over the tabloids because u made an ass out of urself (so they say). U tried to stir up the pot and u did. Keep on keeping on….Luv U Perez.

    30. 30

LOL! Like you really care Perez! I'm really sick of this "gays" who seem to be gay just for the publicity they can get out of it!
Your recent actions showed your lack of commitment to the LGTB organization, what's more I don't recall seeing you in a public activity or giving a real speech in favor of gay rights! All you did during this time is whine over and over again about Miss California's points of view and reminding us why most gays are hated for being soooo INTOLERANT when it comes to other ppls rights. You gained your "fame" outing celebs ignoring their privacy and the respect we need to give to each other, you keep on drawing nasty things and giving horrible names to celebs to insinuate that they are gay even if they are NOT!
I honestly find it offensive that such a bright mind like Harvey Milk is used on your site, this site is full of sc um and bs and it's so sad that someone who did a LOT for the gay community is used to get a few more hints on your site. PATHETIC PEREZ!

      31

I'm looking forward to seeing this on blu-ray. No one should be a target based on their race, sex or sexual preference.

    32. 32

sigh this bs pisses me off. If your gonna praise a guy get his stance right. Milk was a flaming biggot who claimed all religion was evil and that every man woman or child who had the slightest gay thought in their head was gay too. If he really cared about equal rights he shouldn't of done what alot of other loud mouth asses do which, is hate on something. So stop glorifying this man just because he's gay. Martin Luther King was a good man. this liberal ass bureaucrat was trash. the only dream this man had was one where mankind died out because no one knew who to fuck anymore.

    33. 33

sorry kiddy that movie was just a piece of holleywood magic historically the man was no different than any other intolerant gay guy. aka perez. but, what with all the bs he spouts youd think hed be a gay asshole someone woulda plugged years ago. Preaching hate against, hate doesn't make you a hero… It makes you a hypocrite.

    34. 34

Its because a large amount of gay people in america do have aids reason being is their so self serving they dont tell their partner and guess what..? they get it too. Oh year and whatever person compared america to ethiopia, the hiy capital of the world. May like to take a shot at mexicans next hear that pig flu is pretty bad too. fucking racist dumbass!

    35. 35

      Re: KOOL KID

umhmm school right? but you still manage to be on here 24/7

    36. 36

      Re: Kate27_is_a_Moron

      amen sista!

my husband is Mexican American and is in the USMC but they're are still people that ask him where "he's from". He can sit there and tell them the USA or Cali a million times and they'll still ask him where "he originated"

    37. 37

I am so happy this has come to pass. A friend of mine refers to it as "Gay Day" instead of recognizing that not only was he gay, and an activist for gay equality, but the other great things he did as well! We need another Harvey Milk! :)

    38. 38

That is really wonderful news and so deserved.
Harvey Milk gave his life for what he believed in and to help achieve equal civil rights for everyone. He was a pioneer and California did the right thing to finally give him the recognition he deserves.
      KUDO's

    39. 39

Thank you California Senate and Senator Leno!
      =
I hope the Governator signs on this time. Yes, Milk was a legendary LGBT leader but his politics were not limited to gay issues and the good he accomplished has been felt well beyond California.

    40. 40

Gave his life for his beliefs? Hollywood re-writing history again. Harvey was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Good guy, but not worthy of his own day.

    41. 41

      Cool!

    42. 42

Religious Intolerance is h8 and bigotry:
This 2008 Hate Crime Survey examines six facets of violent
hate crime in the 56 European and North American countries
that comprise the Organization for Security and Cooperation
in Europe (OSCE): Violence Based on Racism and
      Xenophobia, Antisemitic Violence, Violence Against
Muslims, Violence Based on RELIGIOUS INTOLERANCE, Violence
Against Roma, and Violence Based on Sexual Orientation
and Gender Identity Bias. Religious intolerance is part of the hate crimes bill.

    43. 43

Making fun of someone's religion is hurtful and h8ful and intolerant and bigoted.

    44. 44

Re: I_BEAT_QUEERS – when you decide that it is okay to levy hatred toward others then you are condoning hatred being levied upon yourself. Unfortunately you have expressed here that you think it is okay that people would hate you. That sounds a little sefl destructive to me. Spread joy not hate, then the world can evolve.

    45. 45

      ah, another dead fag….

    46. 46

Re: cvbiach – Is that any way to talk about your FATHER?!?!

    47. 47

      cool.

    48. 48

That is a movement for civil rights. But what are Gay Marriage proponents fighting for? An additional or special right. Homosexuals already enjoy the same rights as the rest of Americans, the law is blind to sexual orientation. You can drink from the same water fountain, sit on the same seats on the bus, go to the same schools, and marry the same people everyone else can marry… a consenting adult of the opposite sex.

Gay Marriage proponents are not whining, complaining and fighting for the same rights as everyone else… they are trying to obtain a special or new right that no one else has. If you believe Gay Marriage should be permissible, then debate that. But stop calling it a “civil right”.

    49. 49

SICK SICK SICK!!!!! YOU NAME A DAY AFTER A PERSON FOR BEING A PERVERT? WHATS NEXT, A DAY HONORING THE STATES MOST PROMINENT CHILD MOLESTER/BANK ROBBER/SERIAL KILLER??? HOW DOES "RON JEREMY DAY" SOUND? HOW ABOUT "TED BUNDY DAY" OR "PEREZ HILTON DAY" ????

    50. 50

RIGHT ON! If MLK gets a day then yes, there should be a HM day, too!
