Boo! Peru Bans Gay Cops

Filed under: Gay Gay Gay > Etc.

In Peru, Interior Minister Mercedes Cabanillas has banned gays from the police force.

The new law states that anyone who has sexual relations with someone of the same gender will be indefinitely suspended from the police force.

But the law doesn't stop there!

The same goes for people who cheat on their spouses, and people who organize and participate in strikes or protests.

So basically, if you're a cop in Peru, you've given up a lot of your basic rights…even as you're supposed to be protecting the rights of others.

When can we finally evolve and learn to see people as…well, people.

It's not about 'treating people as people', you mincing twink, it's about PROJECTING AUTHORITY- and homosexuals are 'Beta males': weak, vain, ridiculous, inconsequential as men.

Hola Perez Hilton: I was born in Peru and I'm a gay man living in the U.S. I appreciate you wrote this post to raise awareness on the unfair situations that LGBT people face in Peru, because of homophobia and fake morals.

This attack on gay people is wrong and discriminatory but it doesn't necessarily reflect on what the people of Peru is all about. I would suggest readers to get informed first, before leaving hate messages. Peru is a fascinating place with great people, but as a post-colonial nation it still suffers of injustice, chaos and inequality. Remember that Latin America is the most unfair region in the planet.

In this case, I believe the Peruvian government has passed this law as a way to distract Peruvians from other issues. They know this law is stupid and discriminatory, but it helps them to distract people from other wrongdoings. Minister Mercedes Cabanillas -a controversial and corrupted politician- is using this bill as a distraction propaganda.

For instance, Alan Garcia –the bipolar president a reader mentioned here- has leased 73% of the Amazon forest to oil companies, mostly from the U.S., thanks to the U.S.-Peru free trade agreement. They are trying also to hide the effects of the worldwide crisis in the country’s economy while unemployment rates are going up. Also foreign corporations keep destroying the Andes mountains –google La Oroya- and generalized corruption worsening, and a secret U.S. military base has been installed in the Andean region of Ayacucho.

I say, lets convert this trick of the Peruvian government into a way to help our Peruvian LGBT brothers and sisters. Personally I think we all can do something by contacting the Peruvian government and tell them what we think, tell them why you think discrimination is wrong, and why gay people have the right of a safe and fair employment environment with fears and without a second class citizenship status. I have posted the contact info in my blog PERUANISTA.

Hi! I am Peruvian, I live in Lima and I am gay.

First of all I would like to say that I disagree with the new law of the police. This law is based on prejudice to gay people and ignorance and a goes against democracy. Why? Let my explain:

      - You cannot discrminate a person from this institution for beeing gay. This law assumes that every gay relationship generates scandal. This is a very common stereotype for gay people in Peru, because of the gay people in the entertaiment bussiness and does not apply for every gay person in Peru, at least not for me or my gay friends.

      - Also, you cannot assume every gay person won't be fit to do their job as a policeman. Everyone has in their minds that a gay person is "delicate" or not serious enough. This is totally not true. I feel really offended. I bet I can do a better job as a policeman than any of the straight corrupt policemans in Lima, but sadly the salaries for the policeman in Peru are terrible.

      - Finally, I think that everyone should do with their private lifes what they want. These changes have their roots from the corruption inside the police institution and the gay part it's because someone published a video of 2 policewoman making out, which I think it's an invasion of their privacy and has nothing to do with the police institution.

Second of all, I would like to say somethings about my country
      - My country is described politically as a republic, but there is still corruption and too much ignorance. This is mainly because we are a very poor country, with more than 45% living in extreme poverty and only 9% of wealthy peruvians. You can't expect from peruvians to accept gay people easilly, specially with 87% of the population beeing catholic (the church still has a lot of influence). In todays poll about these new law, only 20% of disagreed, but this doesn't mean that everyone hates gay people. As I said before there is a lot of ignorance, even within the most educated persons.
      - Lima, is a really big city. You will see many extremly poor areas near to well developed areas. Usually tourist go the the historic areas, financial and comercial areas of the rich and middle class and never see these poor districts, so there is nothing to be mad about if you come here I have met a lot of tourists, and they have been very pleased with their visit.
      - Nightlife in Lima is growing everyday, and good quality gay places are still limited, but there is a new generation of gays trying to change this image.
All in all, allthough there is still a lot of prejudice in my country about gay people, I think this is going to change through time. It takes time and I have faith things are going to change. :)
Thanks (I am deeply sorry for any grammar/spelling errors, my english is still very primitive)

I just wanna say that MOST PERUVIANS (at least the ones with a little brain) are so agaisnt this shit and HATE that this people rule our country, promoting hate and discrimination… ITS INSANE!!! I just cant believe this shit… HORRIBLE!.

Re: Jesus Fucking Christ – No actually… basic rights are UNIVERSAL rights… this means that it doesnt matter which country are you from. And they taught me that in my peruvian school… which doesnt differ from a US school… (ive been to both). I love my country but our authorities does not represent what most of us are (one american example:Bush). I hope someone new comes and changes this mess.
