Gossiping in the Heights

If you've never read Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights, get to it. Two reasons:

1. It's a classic. You sound smart when you've read a classic.

2. Gossip Girl hottie Ed Westwick is playing the lead of Heathcliff in the new film adaptation. And if you read the book, you will understand how perfect that is.

His leading lady was slated to be Natalie Portman, but Variety is reporting that she was replaced with Gemma Arterton due to scheduling conflicts.

We would have rather had Portman, as we're not sure a Bond Girl can handle the complex role of Cathy, but we'll wait and see the performance to judge.

Would U got see it?

What? WHAT?! Perez, you have lost your mind if you seriously think some D-grade drama beef cake has the chops to pull off one of the most complicated, tortured characters in Victorian literature. If you had been lauding about perfect casting because they had cast Rufus Sewell, or James Purefoy, I'd be right with you.

I know you don't actually read the comments, but god damn, a shitty squint does not make a dude a fine tragic actor.

    10. 10

hellllll yea ed westwick…….. say no more

    11. 11

OMG He is perfect for the role. I can't believe they are doing Wuthering Heights again though….who remembers that trashtafic version that MTV did way back when they were doing made for TV movies?? Oh well I love Wuthering Heights, but I love Pride and Prejudice more and I think Kiera Knightly could play the heroine in this one as well.
I can't see portman in that role though, not sure she really has that much depth. Oh well I think Westwick is perfect for it. Good for him.

      www.365hangers.com for the fashion obsessed….

    12. 12

      he is so ugly

    13. 13

Your site is dying piggy……could your long fifteen minutes of fame finally be over? I think so…..MWAHAHAHAHAHA.

    14. 14

      Wow, he is Hot. yum

    15. 15

Ed Westwick is amazing, I would totally go see this. I love Portman too, wish she could have been in it with Westwick.

Oh, and it's "Would you GO see it?"

    16. 16

YES!!!!! I am a smarty pants! That's actually my favorite classic. I've read it millions of times! Can't wait for it :)

    17. 17

Gemma Arterton played the lead in Tess of the D'Urbervilles, so of course she can handle classic drama. I'm more worried about the perty boy. Heathcliff is supposed to be rugged and manly … not spend hours on moisturiser and hair gel.

    18. 18

nooo wayyyyy!! ed westwick is the perfect heathcliff…agh i'm so excited for this movie :)

Why would Natalie Portman lower herself and star along side him? He is sooooo not in her league.

      Re: The London Rich
"If you had been lauding about perfect casting because they had cast Rufus Sewell, or James Purefoy, I'd be right with you."

Wait… How could either Sewell or Purefoy be perfect casting for Heathcliff when they are about 20 years too old to play him? That makes no sense.

I personally think that, if they are going with age-appropriate casting, then Ed Westwick is THE guy to play Heathcliff. He knows how to be tortured, man.

    21. 21

      Re: dehautenbas
LOL, I agree with you, but have you seen Ed Westwick when he is not at an event or on set? He very much not a pretty boy. And he has enough chest hair to go around, if that helps make his case.

    22. 22

uh I remeber you calling him "fug" or some nonsense! sudden change of heart I see, bc he is incredibly hawt.

    23. 23

AH SO EXCITING. I love Ed Westwick

    24. 24

eww i hate ed westwick/chuck bass, im probably the only girl on here to say this, but he is not attractive!

    25. 25

Love the book and the actor.

    26. 26

      ed westwick is ugggly.

    27. 27

haha i'd go see it.. Yum Ed :) lol

    28. 28

has anyone seen gemmas performance is tess of the d'erbavills(spell check)
shes amazing, if anything she was wrongly cast as a bit part bond girl. she can pull it off, they will look great together no?

    29. 29

      Gemma arterton is my girl!

perez, i do love you, but please get your facts straight.

if anyone is qualified to play this role, its gemma. She's not just been a bond girl, perez dear; in fact, she's already proven she's got what it takes to portray a woman from a 19th century British novel. If you want to see for yourself, just rent "Tess of the D'urbervilles" from the BBC, which premiered on masterpiece theater in january in the US. she was absolutely stunning, (perez I think you would love it!)
      not to mention she's gorgeous!

go gemma! i'm sure this will be another amazing adaptation. "tess" is one of my favorite movies

    30. 30

I agree with 'The London Rich' Ed Westwick is not suited for this role at all! Wuthering Heights is a highly complicated novel and the character of Heathcliff is multi-dimensional and extremely hard to grasp - there is no way in a million years that Ed could pull this off, he can't act for shit!!! Heathcliff is meant to be a strong, rugged man - not a bloody metrosexual! I will not be watching it! I'll stick to the BBC adaption of it - ie. the version that has talented actors in it! Having said that I think gemma will make a good Kathryn!

    31. 31

This casting is HORRIFIC. Neither actor nor actress is right for the role. Sounds like a lifetime movie to me. Bummer. Such a classic. Where's Johnny Depp when you need him? Now that would be something!!

    32. 32

      Re: WildOrchid1298

You think Natalie doesn't have the dept to play the role but Ed does? LMAO! That's the most ridiculous thing I've read all day! Natalie is an extremely talented actress! Ed is just a pretty boy who looks good on camera but can't act! I'm glad Natalie is not doing it, I wouldn't want her to have to lower herself to acting alongside such an amateur! Gemma will be great for the role, she has done Classics before!

    33. 33

smoldering eyes, hairy, and totally cute. the surprise hottie that may not be able to act, but at least he can put out that consistent brat attitude. he's the discovery, the Taylor Kitsch of GG. now he either has good people who find him work or his career will be over. hope for the best, wanna see him with his clothes off in something that ain't on Fox.

    34. 34

      YES YES YES!

    35. 35

      Re: cinamae
Um. LOOK IN THE MIRROR SWEETIE. HE'S WAY HOTTER THAN YOU'LL EVER BE.

    36. 36

i dont find him appealing. his big nose turns me off. and him being cast as heathcliff? sigh. way to ruin another complex character.

    37. 37

spotted. is this for real?! Can't wait!! xoxo

    38. 38

I am definitely watching this movie. I LOVE the story, the characters better not screw it up. Natalie Portman would have made a great addition though.

    39. 39

FUCK, I was just talking to my friend the other day about how I'd love to see him as Heathcliff but wasn't sure if he could pull it off. I SO HOPE HE CAN. Because he looks SO MUCH like the character in my mind and they never have chosen the right people to this part. GOD, PLEASE LET THIS GUY KICK ASS IN THIS MOVIE, PLZ PLZ. It's my favorite fucking book. This made my day, YAY!

    40. 40

Just wanted to say that Gemma Arterton played Tess in Tess of the d'Urbervilles in a BBC adaptation and she was fantastic! I agree that in Bond and St Trinians she wasn't amazing but as Tess she really was. I reckon she'll do a good job as Cathy in Wuthering Heights!!!!!Can't wait! Oh, and how beautiful does Ed Westwick look in that photo?!!!!!

    41. 41

Glad in isn't Portman. She is incredibly boring to me.

    42. 42

Oh, yes seen every verison of this movie! But, Lawrence Oliviar has always been been the best! But, who knows he just might top him.

    43. 43

He's so down to earth, really cool.

    44. 44

      is Dikincider ok?

    45. 45

ya prob my beste loves ed

    46. 46

      I JUST JIZZED.
      PERFECT casting.

    47. 47

Re: emireland88 – Have you ever read the book? And for the record he acts pretty well for an British guy? There are other actors out there that are horrible that you should be commenting on. Perhaps you just aren't a fan of Gossip Girl, but it actually has a pretty good following…most t.v. shows are losing ratings because of online video taking away, but it still does quite well.

Wait. Since when does Perez like Ed? He's always calling him fug….

    55. 55

god he is SO fuckin sexy;) yummmm

    56. 56

He's going to be awesome!!! I'm glad its not Natlia Portman, shes way overated.

    57. 57

Re: Melissa is always RIGHT – #49 Omg! That is so sad.I know he had a drinking problem, but i thought he was doing better.I hope it's not true he was a nice guy when he was sober.I'll say a prayer for him tonight!
      Thanks for the info.

    58. 58

Have YOU read WH???? I love the book, and this guy is waaaay too fem for this role. Heathcliff is a strong guy- not a little wimpy thing like Westwick. Even if the producers are just wanting the teeny boppers to go to this flick, they could have done a LOT better than this this little boy.

    59. 59

IS IT JUST ME? OR DOES THIS GUY LOOK LIKE THE OLD 80'S PORN STAR
      DANY BROWN?

      I AM JUS' SAYIN'?
      U KNOW? KEEPIN IT REAL!!!!!!

    60. 60

Oh no! As much as I love Chuck there is no way he can make a better Heathcliff than Tom Hardy! The BBC version is the BEST ever and he's sooo much hotter. Sorry Chuck stick to Blair, Cathy's too good for you!

    61. 61

I'd buy the DVD it if they use Kate Bush' Wuthering Heights song as theme song. Kate Bush rocks.

    62. 62

Ralph Finnes will always be Heathcliff, remember that.

    63. 63

      NOT

    64. 64

oh hells yes. i'm going to see this, i love ed westwick :)

    65. 65

You remind me of one those sleazy used car salesman. The type who wears knock off designer suits and brag or point out to others that they are the "real thing." Who are always sweaty and when you are talking to them they "pretend" to be listening but in actualality they are thinking only how to "impress you" so they can make the "sale."

Yes, that is how people like you "sound" intelligent, by reading the cliff notes of a classic holding them in your sweaty sausage hands.

    66. 66

I will be seeing this PRONTO! One of my favorite books and Ed's so hot

    67. 67

'We would have rather had Portman, as we're not sure a Bond Girl can handle the complex role of Cathy'
SHUT UP PEREZ, dont pretend you can read ENGLISH, all you read is TRASH/GOSSIP mags

    68. 68

I thought I heard like, a year ago that the Juno chick was playing Catharine? What happened to that? It was on E news and everything. Haha

    71. 71

OH MY Ed Westwick is sooooo hot! I would see him even if he plays the role of Mariah Carey in Glitter…. no matter what he has me in!

    72. 72

Re: ILOVECHUCK – Yeah that's why he is MY boyfriend ;)

    73. 73

Re: sabergurl – I would so much rather see an older lead who can actually ACT than some mimbo like Westwick stinking up the role. It has been done in other period films to great effect. Look at the Ang Lee Sense & Sensibility, for example.

Both Olivier and Fiennes were in their 30s when they played Heathcliff. Sewell and Purefoy may be in their 40s by now, but they don't look it.

But it doesn't matter because they're obviously going to just do the first half of the story and leave out Heathcliff's revenge. So either way, it's going to be lame. Westwick's casting just confirms that this is going to be just another shitty movie for fangirls to obsess over, all making dumb icons and wallpapers, "shipping" characters, and wasting $30 on I'M MRS HEATHCLIFF shirts at Hot Topic.

    74. 74

OMG YES. he will be perfect!!! i love emily bronte. i hope portman gets catherine… thatd also be perfect. wowowowowowowowow!!!!!

    75. 75

Hell yes i would most definitely go see it. I love Ed.

    76. 76

Omg Perez, Gemma Arteton has played Tess in Tess of the D'urbervilles and Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice, so why on earth wouldnt she be able to cope with playing Cathy!! U have to know the facts dude! Natalie Portman's debut as Anne Boleyn in The other boleyn girl sucked BIG TIME!! Get your info dude and stop embarassing yourself eurgh

    77. 77

Re: weeeen – I second this!!! I bet he 'read' the book of wikipedia hahaha

    78. 78

love ed, will love the movie to

    87. 87

Gemma Arterton did the Elizabeth Bennet part in Lost In Austen!
      She's perfect for the rol!

      ED……… HOT!

    88. h311o says – reply to this

      88

Every English or British actor has done period drama at some point of their career. Ed should have kept his London accent a safer secret. As for whether or not Gemma Arterton can handle the Cathy character, she did Tess of the D'Urbavilles - yet another period drama- and she did extremely well in the role. There's one thing you can rely on British actors to deliver well and that is the period drama. Everyone has been in one at some point and if they haven't, its on the horizon somewhere.

    89. 89

Love Ed, love Chuck, love Heathcliff. Ed's a great actor, I just hope he can pull of Heathcliff. Not so sure about Portman or Arterton however…

    90. 90

"We would have rather had Portman, as we're not sure a Bond Girl can handle the complex role of Cathy"

Gemma Arterton was AMAZING in Tess of the D'urbervilles, also a very classic and complex roll. Her performance made me weep all the way through and if you haven't seen it, I recommend you do! after watching that Gemma Arterton is the PERFECT Cathy. And as such a big part of Wuthering Heights is the Yorkshire Moors it's set on, I really like the fact that they have chosen two up and coming British actors for the roles.

    91. 91

Re: dehautenbas – I know - gemma arterton, who has done some brilliant work in period dramas for British television, or natalie portman… princess amidala and has had hundreds of atrocious films… I know hwo I'd be picking for this role tbh

I know that I'm definitely going to see this one when it comes out :)

    92. 92

Have you seen Gemma Arterton in Tess of the Durbervilles? She did a really decent job of that and quite frankly I'm sceptical Natalie Portman, pretty and talented though she is, has the right kind of physical presence to pull off Catherine Earnshaw.

Plus there are too many of you yanks around butchering British accents!! :)

    93. 93

this is gonna be brilliant. Ed Westwick and Gemma Arderton
      =)

    94. 94

      i agree.
      this is gonna be brilliant

    95. 95

I think he would make a brilliant heathcliff , Ralph Phiennes did a good job in the last one so he has a pretty high standard to achieve and also the book is absolutely brilliant ..but we'll see definitely gonna watch it ? You think he is gonna keep his british accent for it..?

    96. 96

Oh my lord!!! He is just perfect!!!!!! Heathcliff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yeay! Oh, by the way.. I saw Gemma in some tv-movie/short series where she played Elizabeth Bennet! And she was stunning! So I think she will be great too! :D
But I am a bit worried that Ed won't do a good job with the accent.. but we'll see..

    97. 97

Perez honey, Gemma is a serious actor who *then* became a Bond Girl. She played Tess in a fantastic BBC version of Tess of the D'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy, so she's easily got the acting chops to play Kathy. I'm more worried whether Ed Westwick can nail the accent.

    98. 98

PEREZ! Gemma Arterton is the most AMAZING actress. She is my favourite! OMG is Tess of the Durbevilles she was INCREDIBLE. You have to see the BBC adaption of it if you haven't it shows what she can really do, she is AMAZING. Really Perez, this is going to be amazing.

    99. 99

Re: Fuddawudda – Ummm. Ed Westwick is English. He doesn't need to nail the accent. He already has it.

    100. 100

      Will definetely see this!
Gemma Arterton is most definetely capable of playing the role of Cathy. She was incredible in the BBC adaptation of Thomas Hardy's 'Tess of the D'urbervilles' as the lead role Tess.
