While competing in the Charlotte UltraSwim competition in North Carolina on Saturday, the Olympic gold medalist lost the 100-meter backstroke to swimmer Aaron Peirsol!
Peirsol finished the backstroke in 53.32 seconds while Phelps took a dismal 53.79 seconds to complete the 100-meter stroke.
It was the first time Phelps has lost in a year.

Aaron is the WORLD record holder and Olympic Champion in this event. Yes Phelps can swim it, but it's not one of his best. It's only really news if Phelps loses one of his actual races. If he loses the 200 fly, then that's news worthy.

This is just a warmup meet for him to get back into competition mode so he is swimming all his off events. And Peirsol won the 100m back at the olympics and i think he holds the record in that event too.

Just because he rocked the Olympics doesn't mean he can win all the time. I mean some of those races he won by a hundreth of a second. Peirsol is an AMAZING swimmer and probably has been working just as hard as Phelps.

He's dominated in backstoke events for at least the last 8 years. He took over from Lenny Krayzelburg. He's the best in the world. Not to mention F-I-N-E! He wins in that dept. too.
