Probably METHODIST! Wish you would proofread…..

    4. 4

I'm a very happy United Methodist. The Book of Disciplines can be very liberal regarding social issues. A lot of people have left the church over the stance, but many others feel welcomed and find a home.

Perez what about YOUR opinion on why gay is "cool"???? It's sooo pathetic to read this childish thing from a gay person. Because of my job I deal on daily basis with gay ppl and met gay couples, they are all wonderful human beings and wonderful ppl who truly deserve to have their rights recognized and valued. It's so sad for me to read your stupid rants and see between the lines all the hate you have for straight ppl and beautiful ppl, I know they gave you a hard time when you were a kid bullying and all but get over it and be a bigger person. You are making your own bed…

That article is about dumb and so is the sermon… concentrate on health care? That's called bait and switch. Make no bones about the topic I'm talking about because look what else is going on!!! The sermon was POLITICKING - not preaching. Like the written article says - Who cares if a man commits adultery - he's an adult and there's worse stuff. It's called SPEAKING ON TOPIC. She makes bones about corporate greed, yet issues a PRESS RELEASE on her sermon? How about church greed. It's stories and sermons like this, that cause backlash against the gay community. It isn't fair, but it's the truth. All she did was for fame and considering her audience she was "preaching to the choir" - doesn't exactly do much in the way of championing rights - just pissing people off on both sides for using a pulpit for monetary and political gain.

Everyone is entitled to worship the fictional sky faery! ..no pun intended :)

See, we do have at least 1 non-asinine homophobe religious person in Texas. The pastor rocks, and since she is in my area, I may actually start going to church.

      Thank you Rev. Holbert!

      Shout out to Garland!

Methodist has a T in it, Perez; there's no such thing as "Methodis"

    12. 12

As a student of the Christian faith, I find the gay debate to be one of the Church's greatest hypocricies. I'm so glad that there are people leading congregations towards truth and love, and away from judgement and hatred.

Kudos Perez. I truly believe that you have brought much-needed attention to this topic. Everyone on this planet deserves to be accepted and to find love.

Leviticus 18:22 “Do not practice homosexuality, having sex with another man as with a woman. It is a detestable sin.

Plain and simple from the Bible

    14. 14

I wish we could all be "considered" equals……….HOWEVER……PEREZ….you called a 14 year old girl a "whore" because she slept with many boys a few articles ago! Would you have done that if it were a 14 year old "BOY" sleeping with a bunch of girls????? Women need to be equals too! Blacks, Gays AND women need to be seen as humans and as equals! I wish everyone would stop labeling everyone but the white straight man, and let us live in peace!!!!!

    15. 15

Re: Kate27 – Kate, Why do you think that perez hates straight people? I don't think that standing up and becoming the punching bag for his community makes him a hetero-hater. He has very strong views, and needs to have those kinds of convictions in order to fight through so many people's blindness and hatred. I don't personally agree with all of our dear Perez's views, but no one can argue that his outspoken nature has done wonders for getting the word out there. You're here on his site, aren't you? He has successfully sparked some very intelligent debates simply by being outrageous.

When women had no rights, do you think that the ones who actually made a difference were easy to get along with? Why do you think feminists have been given such a bad name? You need to hold strong to your convictions even when it feels that everyone is against you, and sometimes, that makes you appear as an extremist… (and almost no one likes an extremist.)

Re: drhort – Hmmmmmm…. to those foolish individuals who are speaking on behalf of a matter they know nothing about, I beg of you to please educate yourselves: Homophobic fundamentalists often quote two particular verses that seem to be against gay people. These two verses, both of which appear in the book of Leviticus, are.."You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination." (Leviticus 18:22)and…"If a man lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination. They shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them." (Leviticus 20:13) continued:

    18. 18

Below, we'll take a look at other scripture verses that are in the exact same book (Leviticus) as the above verse. This exercise proves that those preachers who are so enthusiastic about quoting the book of Leviticus to affirm their personal prejudice against people who are gay or lesbian become awfully quiet when it comes to other verses that appear in the very same book. Remember, this isn't about faith whatsoever. It's about people who have pre-existing anti-gay prejudice in their hearts. They choose the Christian Bible as the tool with which they attempt to affirm and legitimize that pre-existing prejudice."For everyone who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death. He has cursed his father or his mother. His blood shall be upon him." (Leviticus 20:9)

    19. 19

Imagine what would happen today if we killed every child who was disrespectful to his parents. Fundamentalists explain this verse away, saying that it is part of the Old Levitical Holiness Code and is not meant to be taken literally. But the above verse is just a mere 3 verses before Leviticus 20:13, one of their favorite anti-gay scriptures which, of course, they do choose to apply literally. Fundamentalists change their entire methodology of scriptural interpretation when it suits their purpose, even when dealing with verses that are a just couple of sentences away from each other.
"If a man lies with a woman during her sickness and uncovers her nakedness, he has discovered her flow, and she has uncovered the flow of her blood. Both of them shall be cut off from her people." (Leviticus 20:18)

    20. 20

continued: "If a man lies with a woman during her sickness and uncovers her nakedness, he has discovered her flow, and she has uncovered the flow of her blood. Both of them shall be cut off from her people." (Leviticus 20:18)
Imagine what would happen today if we deported every man and woman who had ever had sex together while the woman was having her period. Fundamentalists decline the opportunity to take this verse literally, which is merely 5 verses after Leviticus 20:13.
"Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property." (Leviticus 25:44-45)Did you ever wonder where racist, uneducated people in the 19th century got the idea that slaves were just property and not people? Directly from the above verse, which fundamentalists do not, of course, take literally.
"Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard." (Leviticus 19:27)

    21. 21

"Bible-believing" fundamentalists never preach against the evils of shaving, as they do not take this verse literally for our day. Of course, they most certainly would do so if they had a personal bias against shaving, but apparently, they do not.
"…and the swine, though it divides the hoof, having cloven hooves, yet does not chew the cud, is unclean to you." (Leviticus 11:7)
As you can see, the book of Leviticus also prohibits the eating of pork (a swine is a pig). Of course, fundamentalists do not choose to use this verse to preach against eating pork. Sadly, however, they have no problem abusing the Bible to condemn gay and lesbian people. Remember, it's about their personal prejudice against gay people, not about a true desire to understand what the Bible actually says.
"…do not plant your field with two kinds of seed. Do not wear material woven of two kinds of material." (Leviticus 19:19)

    22. 22

continued: Farmers in this country almost always grow more than one kind of crop in their fields. In fact, they often must do so for ecological reasons. Fundamentalists do not apply this verse literally. If they were to preach against farmers, there would be an uproar, and rightfully so. Fundamentalists also ignore the Biblical command to not wear clothes that have two different kinds of material. The shirts that many fundamentalists are often seen wearing must be a cotton/polyester blend, the most common in the United States of America. They may be "Bible believing" Christians, but this is yet another verse that they don't believe should be applied to today. The Bible also states that eating shrimp and lobster is an abomination:
"But all in the seas or in the rivers that do not have fins and scales, all that move in the water or any living thing which is in the water, they are an abomination to you." (Leviticus 11:10)
"They (shellfish) shall be an abomination to you; you shall not eat their flesh, but you shall regard their carcasses as an abomination." (Leviticus 11:11)
"Whatever in the water does not have fins or scales; that shall be an abomination to you." (Leviticus 11:12)Hmmmmmmmmmmmm….I will leave this by ironically using a verse in the Bible, it would only seem apt to do so. "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone." (John 8:7)

    23. 23

      1 Samuel 20:41
"After the boy had gone, David got up from the south side of the stone and bowed down before Jonathan three times, with is face to the ground. Then they kissed each other and wept together - but David wept the most." (NIV)

Other translations have a different ending to the verse: "…and they kissed one another and wept with one another, until David exceeded." (KJV)
"…and they kissed one another and wept with one another until David got control of himself." (Amplified Bible)
"and they sadly shook hands, tears running down their cheeks until David could weep no more." (Living Bible)
"They kissed each other and wept together until David got control of himself." (Modern Language)
"They kissed each other and wept aloud together." (New American Bible)
"Then David and Jonathan kissed each other. They cried together, but David cried the most." (New Century Version)
"Then they kissed one another and shed tears together, until David's grief was even greater than Jonathan's." (Revised English Bible)
"…and they kissed one another and wept with one another until David recovered himself." (Revised Standard Version)

    24. 24

Ruth 1:16-17 and 2:10-11 describe their close friendship Perhaps the best known passage from this book is Ruth 1:16-17 which is often read out during opposite-sex and same-sex marriage and union ceremonies:

"Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely, if anything but death separates you and me." (NIV)

Ruth 1:14, referring to the relationship between Ruth and Naomi, mentions that "Ruth clave onto her." (KJV) The Hebrew word translated here as "clave" is identical to that used in the description of a heterosexual marriage in Genesis 2:24: " Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh." (KJV)

the fact that these protestants twist God's Holy Word is not surprising to me. It is a well-known fact that a lot of members of protestant churches are going to the Catholic Church and getting baptized, precisely because of this. A great number of protestant denominations are twisting and changing the Holy Bible to fit in the patterns of this world. It is VERY obvious that, for them, the church is like business. They draw people in telling them lies about what God really says in order to have more members. BEWARE, DIANA HOLBERT, THE DAY IS COMMING WHEN YOU'LL HAVE TO FACE GOD AND GIVE HIM AN EXPLANATION ON WHY YOU CHANGED HIS WORD AND TOLD LIES TO HIS CHILDREN. YOU ARE WHAT JESUS DESCRIBED AS A "FALSE PROPHET" (Matthew 7:15). YOU DON'T KNOW JESUS AND HE DOESN'T KNOW YOU (Matthew 7:23). STOP PREACHING IN HIS NAME!!!!

    28. 28

HOMOSEXUAL LOVE STORY OR THE BIBLE ?

Jonathan became one in spirit with David and he loved him as himself." (NIV)

"…the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul" (KJV)"

      THE BIBLE!!!

    29. 29

      2 Samuel 1:26
"I grieve for you, Jonathan my brother; you were very dear to me. Your love for me was wonderful, more wonderful than that of women."

    30. 30

      1 Samuel 18:2
"From that day, Saul kept David with him and did not let him return to his father's house." (NIV)

David left his parent's home and moved to Saul's where he would be with Jonathan. This is a strong indication that the relationship was extremely close. It echoes the passage marriage passage in Genesis 2:24: "Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh."

      1 Samuel 18:3-4
"And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself. Jonathan took off the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his tunic, and even his sword, his bow and his belt." (NIV)

Since people in those days did not wear underwear, Jonathan stripped himself naked in front of David. That would be considered extremely unusual behavior (then and now) unless their relationship was physical.

    37. 37

Preach it, y'all! Thank you, j_john and Aussione, for bringing some textual material for discussion. Everyone responds to the Bible at different levels; I just wish people would be open to conversation and not presume their interpretation is the only right way. I think we could learn a lot from one another that way. It seems that fundamentalists who feel 100% sure of their rigid beliefs are more often than not quite scared of the possibility that they don't have all the answers. It must be hard to relinquish that sense of control, but that's what faith is all about, in my opinion.

None of us are without sin. Why do these bible belters think their sins are more acceptable and/or forgivable than the sins of others. Isn't judging others are preaching hate just as sinful as homosexuality?

    40. 40

      Religious discussions kill me.
Fundamentalist zealots are quick to quote the Bible .. to support their prejudices and misguided hate.
Sorry, that's not religion .. that's pathetic and sad

    41. 41

      Re: drhort

Okay, so it calls sleeping with the same sex a sin…. that doesn't mean God doesn't accept gay people! Do you know how many people sin everyday? God still loves them.

      j_john:
I want to compliment you on your many intelligent responses here. I agree with you - well said.
Your # 36 sums it up perfectly!
I have discovered that the very people who spew-out Biblical quotes are the very ones you need to watch out for!
      Pretty scary.

      Re: perezito_is_an_asshole
Just wondering: Is "asshole" in the Bible?

    44. 44

When you say "gay" I take it you mean something like guys that like to fuck other guys up the butt?

    45. 45

All the sermons in the world doesnt change whats written in Romans. The Bible says it all in pretty easy to understand language.

    46. 46

You can deny it all you want, but homosexuality is a sin. You will find out when you meet you maker.

    47. 47

      Re: Ultraworld

      Rom. 1:26-27
Paul didn't write it as a condemnation of homosexuality, but as a criticism of Greek behavior in temple worship. Greeks often incorporated sexual behavior in temple worship."
Paul's support for the oppression of women, and his acceptance of slavery as a normal social practice in (Philemon 1:15 to 16) make you question him dont you think

    48. 48

      Re: Kellergirl

The code of rules and behaviors in Leviticus does not apply to Christians. No Christian group I know demands full compliance with this ancient code of behavior. If you did you would have to keep kosher laws. Chritians don’t even demand compliance with the sexual rules in Leviticus. If you did, you would allow polygamy, which is lawful in Leviticus. Unless you are prepared to obey all the rules in Leviticus, you cannot blame homosexuals for not feeling bound to obey them. To point to these two verses and demand selective compliance is ludicrous.

    49. 49

      Re: Kellergirl

Romans 2:1: "Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things." (King James Version)
Or as Williams rendered the passage:
"At whatever point you judge the other, you are condemning yourself."

    50. 50

"…there was no understanding of sexual orientation in the culture and time when scripture was written. There was not even a word for 'homosexuality' or 'homosexual' in Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic, the original languages of scripture. There are biblical references that condemn same-sex sexual behavior, but they are all within contexts related to violence, idolatry, promiscuity and exploitation.
Careful reading within the historical setting reveals that it is the violence, idolatry, promiscuity and exploitation that is condemned, not the same-sex sexual behavior.
The same condemnation is given to opposite-sex sexual behavior that is violent, idolatrous, promiscuous and exploitative."

Re: perezito_is_an_asshole – I'm not a Christian. I do not claim to be. I have studied the bible from a scholastic standpoint only. I have also studies Judaism and Islam. I am very interested in hearing the other side of the story. But I'm not sure how this makes me confused. I'm in fact very secure in my own beliefs. Which do not descriminate against anyone. Please enlighten me, oh PEREZ_IS_AN_ASSHOLE. What does God REALLY want me to do?

    54. 54

The Golden Rule is all ya need to know. Simple. And to anyone quoting Leviticus? Puleeeze! When you follow all the other rules laid down in that book come back and tell me about homosexuality! Made your "burnt offering" or stoned your daughter to death yet today? Cause that's what is says right next to the anti-gay stuff.

    56. 56

While Rev. Holbert's open and affirming stance is to be commended, she still is part of a denomination that will neither marry nor ordain openly lesbian and gay people. For true inclusion, look for an open and affirming United Church of Christ. The UCC was the first mainline denomination to ordain an openly gay person, as well as the first to affirm the marriage rights of all people. Also, the Cathedral of Hope, the world's largest predominantly lesbian and gay church, which happens to be in Dallas, is a member of the UCC.
