Jimmy Kimmel Slams His Own Network!

Filed under: TV News > Jimmy Kimmel

Jimmy Kimmel might have managed to throw himself under the bus at the ABC 2009 Upfronts in New York yesterday.

The Upfronts are held every year as a way for the major networks to speak to the press about their fall schedules as well as attract advertisers, and when Kimmel gave a presentation at ABC's Upfronts on Tuesday afternoon, he used the opportunity to speak his mind about his employers.

The Jimmy Kimmel Live host's case of verbal diarrhea was evident within seconds of starting: "Everything you're going to hear this week is nonsense. Let's get real here. Let's get Dr. Phil-real here. These new fall shows? We're going to cancel about 90 percent of them. Maybe more," Kimmel proclaimed.

Funny! Scandalous! And most likely true!

He continued: "Every year we lie to you and every year you come back for more. You don't need an upfront. You need therapy. We completely lie to you, and then you pass those lies onto your clients."

How will ABC spin this????

Kimmel also took shots at NBC and their choice to schedule Jay Leno at 10 pm nightly ("NBC got such a head start, they’ve already had time to cancel half their schedule."), as well as FOX and the hit show 24 ("[24's] a head butt away from cancellation.”).

The late night talk show host closed with a punch: "I think all our shows are going to work this year. I really do… I don’t, really."

And Jimmy's final words?

"The important thing to remember is: who cares, it’s not your money."

Really Jimmy?? Normally I adore you but after the last few nights trying to watch you and stupid Eminem is on I would rethink your position and how well you know tv at all.

  3. 3

    Douche!

  4. 4

Well it's true! I won't watch any new ABC shows because I know there's a good chance they'll get canned. When LOST is over next year, I'm pretty much done with tv.

Hey genius… the comedians always trash ABC at upfronts. It's a long standing tradition. Google and see some of the stuff Drew Carey or Triumph The Comic Dog said.

its so true tho, every year the networks come out with these new shows that for the most part are shitty. and every once and a while they come out with a show or two thats not all that bad and end up canceling them. why do they waste their time i'll never understand…they should just take their time, produce actually decent shows that ppl would be semi-interested in watching and maybe they would stay on for more than one season. and the few shows that get ok ratings they should give a lil more of a shot instead of canceling them right off the bat. maybe instead of continuously playing up more hype on shows that already have a fan base they could put a lil more effort into the advertisment of some of the newer ones.

Wow. Seriously, Perez? This is a story? The dude did some ABC self deprecating humor and you treat it like Watergate. He was flown to NY to make these reporters laugh. Get a clue, fucktard.

Re: Below Me – Wrong! Hmm… who is the fucktard?
    .
It is not Perez spinning it this way, it is all media. Do you read anything else? In fact, Dave Itzkoff of the New York Times wrote an article today and says "If Jimmy Kimmel still has a job at ABC on Wednesday, he is either a very lucky or very deft comedian, or he has great blackmail photos of the network executives." it was apparently a shock to ABC and there is something brewing here.

Way to go! Speak the truth.

I was at that upfront and it was funny. Do you really think that his whole spiel wasn't run by the executives at ABC prior? If you had actually been there, you would have seen that he was reading off the teleprompter. Quit being an idiot trying to spark controversy

I was at the upfront too. Jimmy Kimmel is a comedian, he was hired to make people laugh and that is what he did. And with every network they put out a bunch of shows and a few of them gain popularity and then it's back to the drawing board. ABC is a GREAT network, they have great prime Greys, Desperate Housewives, Extreme Home Makeover, Brothers and Sisters, Ugly Betty, Dancing with the Stars, Samantha Who, etc…and they are coming out with a new comedy called Modern family in the Fall which is absolutely hysterical and will definitely be a keeper! As for NBC, they are going to fail with Jay at 10 every night, who was the genius who came up with that idea! Good like trying to sell that.

Is it just me or does Jimmy always look slightly retarded? Like he's special.
