Bob Dylan Commits Plaigarism

A handwritten poem penned by Bob Dylan as a teenager is being put of for auction by Christie's.
It was later revealed that the poem, titled Little Buddy - which references a family dog, was a revised version of song by late country singer Hank Snow.
The song was recorded 11 years before Dylan's poem!
Christie's has acknowledged the discrepancy and the auction will continue as scheduled.

and for the record, he didn't even come up with the tune for blowing in the wind; it was a "revised version" of an old folk song.
Dylan's earliest work was all based off of poems or other folk songs… he didn't really learn to write his own songs until after 1961, which was way after this poem was "plagiarized"..

I doubt you know much about music at all.
It's a very common habit in folk music (particularly older folk music) to take the melodies of older songs and put new lyrics to them. It's also common practice to take lyrics from older songs and rephrase them.

Anybody who follows Bobby D. knows that he is all about the old America, about what America used to be and took inspiration from those of the Woody Guthrie era. Lots of artists share ideas and borrow ideas. Just because he reworked one person's poem when he was a teenager does not make him any less prolific. Look at all of his other works since. And, even if he committed light "plagiarism" in everything he did, he's still an important symbol for 60s America and carries on the old American tradition in art.
Re: kissmyassobama – well, the great thing about rock and roll is that you don't have to have a beautiful, melodic voice to be effective. he was purposely trying to sound like a survivor of the gold rush (aka WOODY GUTHRIE or HANK WILLIAMS) if you would have listened to nashville skyline or the basement tapes, you'd hear his "real" voice. he's not a pop idol. he's a folk/rock legend. he never once tried to convince anybody he was a pop idol. you want to hear a pretty voice from that era, go listen to some motown.

like somebody else said, it's a common folk tradition to do so. nobody talks shit about the byrds' "turn, turn, turn" which is a complete rip off of pete seeger, who completely stole it from the bible. it's common. he's not plagiarizing by any means.
I will say this Perez - At least all of the supremely talented artists that you love to fellate on a regular basis (Teddy doesn't count in this case, though I can tell you feel he's special too) are continuing to uphold the standards set down by greats like Dylan. perez you are a grade a dumbass. most of bob's early material were covers of folk songs, so its not surprising that he'd adapted a poem. thats how folk songs are written and become popular. he was a woody guthrie clone in his early years, but that was just a small section of his work. how anyone can criticise dylan while backing vomit inducing shit like american idol is completely and utterly beyond comprehension.

he claimed authorship of several songs that are not his. he is not all that! he should at least do the service of crediting the folks he got the ideas from. on his last "blues" album, he claimed authorship of two traditional blues songs that were covered by everyone from Muddy Waters to the North Mississippi Allstars. when i found that out, i lost all respect for him.
