How Adam Lambert didn't win American Idol - anatomy of Kris Allen's surprising win
His face was on the cover of Entertainment Weekly. His name was on the back of Katy Perry’s cape. His performances were praised to high heavens by the judges, week after week.
And he just lost American Idol.
Right now, Adam Lambert probably feels the same way Tom Brady did after Super Bowl XLII or Thomas Dewey after the 1948 presidential election. His Idol victory seemed just as pre-ordained as the New England Patriots’ perfect season or the Chicago Tribune’s infamous “Dewey Defeats Truman” headline. And yet, here we are, at the end of the night, wondering how Kris Allen managed to pull off the upset of a lifetime.
Here’s how.
Going into the finale, there was talk of “red state-blue state” politics at work, with Lambert’s painted fingernails, “guyliner,” and uncertain sexuality against Allen’s down-home, churchgoing sensibilities. Given the current political climate, that matchup appeared to favor Lambert, but a number of blue-state types may be “too cool” for Idol’s mass appeal, and unlikely to vote.
Still, it was music, not politics, that got Lambert and Allen to the finals, and while Lambert’s performances attracted headlines, Allen’s more understated style put him in position for the upset.
For all of Lambert’s hype, there were nights when his risks didn’t pay off. And when Lambert missed the mark, he missed by a wide margin. His performance of Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire” was termed “absolute indulgent rubbish” by Simon Cowell, and when he tackled Steppenwolf’s “Born to Be Wild,” Cowell acknowledged that he could see where people would hate it. Even on critically-lauded performances like U2’s “One” and Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love,” his penchant for rearranging a melody to show off his range stood to rub viewers the wrong way. Lambert seemed to understand the problem, and chose his unassailable take on Tears for Fears’ “Mad World” for his encore performance Tuesday, but when it came to alienating viewers, the damage was done.
By contrast, when Allen’s risks didn’t pay off, they didn’t hurt him as much. Sure, his horn-heavy arrangement of Don Henley’s “All She Wants to Do is Dance” fell flat, but it didn’t have the same potential to offend as Lambert’s missteps. And, when Allen stripped down Kanye West’s “Heartless” to its bare acoustic bones last week, it gave him the boost he needed to overtake early favorite Danny Gokey.
Gokey’s elimination provided the final key to Allen’s victory. For all the musical differences between Allen and Gokey, their personalities have a similar appeal. Both are worship directors at their respective churches, and have the same well-documented “Middle America” appeal. That church background also came in handy when it came time to sing the coronation song, “No Boundaries.” Panel member Kara DioGuardi, who co-wrote the song, may not have wanted to judge Allen on it because of the range, but thematically, it was right in his wheelhouse. When Allen took his turn with the annual ode to overcoming obstacles and persevering, you could almost hear the church choir in the background, a la “I Believe I Can Fly,” spiritual ancestor of every Idol winner’s debut single. With Gokey gone, Allen had the best hold on the spirit of the song…and on the spirit of Idol’s viewership.
Of course, in the long run, all this might not mean much. Lambert’s devoted following will serve him well on the charts, while it remains to be seen just how much momentum Allen will carry from his victory. Still, while the future may belong to Adam Lambert - and the past almost certainly does - this moment, for better or worse, belongs to Kris Allen.
Adam has a career in the music business regardless of whether he won AI or not. Clay Aiken came in 2nd and Daughtry was like 4th I think.
i didnt watch any idol this season, except for maybe one or two episodes of the tryouts…but i did tune in for the last 5 minutes when they announced the winner….i could care less who won, i just wanted to be nosey lol…but im sure that adam will go on to have a career without being the winner…its happend in the past several times that the loser has gone on to have a bigger career than the winner. Goodluck to them both tho.

Adam knew exactly what he was doing - and you backed it all the way! It just ddnt pay off in the big win. And you see how much influence you have, just not how you expected.
This article makes perfect sense! It was clear Adam had more talent and originality but gokey's fans would more likely vote for Kris. Adam will have a better career away from Idol anyway!

I think both guys are super talented and it just came down to whose style people preferred. I liked Adam, seemed like a good guy, but I wouldn't want to listen to him scream through a CD on a road trip. Kris is gifted musically to be able to play instruments and arrange songs the way he did during this competition. In the end, I liked Kris better because I felt like I could pop in his future CD and enjoy listening to it. Adam was already making a name for himself before Idol, and he'll continue to be a success. Kris, he's a talented guy and he will do us all proud as our American Idol.

Lamberts down fall no matter how good he was week after week , were in the last week or so. When you Perez and Lib. maintream media tried making it into a "BLUE state vs. RED state" Not everything has to be political. And when you do, be prepared to be disappointed.
Nice spin Perez and 75% accurate however I wonder what the final vote would have been if you hadn't attacked an honest and sincere Miss California? Personally I feel you set back gay relations 10 years by your antics coupled with your verbally abusive assault and contend that it cost Adam the vote!
Adam will do just fine. He might even have a better chance not hauling the American Idol title around. I think he will have the last laugh!
Adam was robbed from what obviously should have been his. I think the judges favoritism towards him backfired. And conservative America just cant yet embrace an openly gay Idol. The voters got it wrong.
Who wrote that article? If you are "borrowing" it you need to say who wrote it and where it came from. Yes, the whole media industry and it's celebrities were crazy for Adam and said he would win. But there are lots of people out there who are not in the 14-19 female demographic that watch idol and vote. The media just doesn't have as strong an influence as it wishes.
Adam is a far, FAR more talented singer than Kris. Adam has a range, from quiet songs to loud rock music, and sounds amazing in all ways. If only America voted based on talent on not based on lifestyle or LOOKS, this competition would be an actual legitimate talent show. It’s a real shame we are so shallow as a country.
I think Adam may win by losing. He was all around better and more talented. Kris' appeal was that he was "safe" and very vanilla. I think Kris needs to be American Idol for a career - and who knows how long it will be - ADAM - this is just the beginning for him. I can see him really branching out - and he most definitely has a following now. AND, I'm kind of thinking it was fixed…I could NOT get through to any of the lines at all - and this was the first time. When I tried Kris' line just to see if it would work - I got through RIght away - which sucks, because I didn't want to vote for him - but I just got a sense something was up.
Adam will end up just fine…..Jennifer Hudson with an Oscar and Constantine with a Tony…..we'll hear plenty from Adam! Lots of winners we never hear from again (or really lackluster careers) like Rueben or soul patrol guuy
This is very true. I mean, come on, Kris couldn't even handle the range on the Kara DioGaurdi song. How is he supposed to release that as a single?????????? In a few months, people will say, "Kris, who?" Adam will def come out on top. I think this is actually a good thing for Adam, because he can put out a record on HIS terms. And that my friends will be amazing.

Arkansas got in over 30 million votes and that was just votes counted from ATT customers. That wasn't including Alltel customer votes from that state. The home state support really helped Kris in this competition.

I love Kris Alllen! I'll admit I was surprised he won because I thought there was more support for Adam. I didn't like some of Adam's performances because I felt they were over performed.

WOW this INFURTIATES me. Adam did not win for the SAME EXACT reason Clay Aiken didn't. NOT because of his questionable sexuality, but due to the fact that he is NOT pop music. Adam has a sick range and amazing talent, but his voice is not a pop voice. Adam's "rock" always seemed ridiculously forced. Would have loved to hear a stripped down musical theatre tune, woulda fit much better with his voice and coulda pushed him further by embracing his own voice. Carrie Underwood did it. She knew she wasn't "pop" she had a COUNTRY voice and she showed it. Kris Allen IS today's pop music. He gets it, he embraces it. THAT is why Kris Allen won.
Seriously, how long could anyone stand to listen to Adam Lambert SCREAM? Not long. Plus, he got really cocky. Kris has so much talent, he's humble, wholesome, all American…What American Idol should be all about. I think the better Artist most definitely won!

Me personally, I have NEVER watched or voted in American Idol before this season. I did this season because im from Conway and people I know know Kris. Alot of people in AR did the same thing. I believe Adam is much more vocally talented, but being from Cali, not as many people have a personal connection with him. The state of California is not going to unite for an American Idol like Arkansas is. People here are actually saying that this is the most exciting thing to happen to the state since Bill Clinton. Seriously. This is actaully better for Adam I think, because he wont have to be under AI contract and can make the kind of music he wants.

I like both Adam and Chris, I voted for Chris b/c I think he would be better suited for the type of album AI puts out. Adam will succeed much more by not being tramped in their box! Yay for Chris and Adam! Love them both! No one can deny that Chris has an amazing voice too just different than Adam!
IF it WAS political it boiled down to a backlash of the last month of having gay issues forced down our throats every since the Miss Cali debacle. I don't care if he's gay, but this could be cause and effect. HOWEVER, I don't like Lambert's voice personally, so I would have voted for Kris anyways. That whole ahhh-up-ahhhhhhh-down-ahhh-up-aaa-down-up thing irritates me. But again, if there IS a political issue here - then the road leads to Perez fault.

Adam lost because the majority of Americans watching AI are a bunch of homophobes who wouldn't know talent if it slapped them in the face. He will do just fine. He has true talent, looks and PERSONALITY on his side unlike the little twat Americans voted in. I'll never watch that show again.
I was STUNNED!! Adam has such a great voice, Kris is cute and he can sorta sing, but I dont see an actual career for him, he will fade away like so many other Idol winners. Adam on the other hand I think will land some kind of career as he has that theater background and real talent. But either way, I have lost faith in the people and AI. This is a TALENT show, nothing else, and in my opinion the talented guy did not win last night.

Here's how I see it, Perez…for months, you have been going on and on about Adam's sexuality, and it caught on in a big way….I think it kinda hurt him.
I don't give a flying fuck that Adam is gay….LOVE HIM!! But what has to be realized is that unfortunately, when you have a family audience viewing, any hint of "oooh, he could be gay…" is going to make an impact.
The fact that EW chose to run that story 2 weeks before the finale is telling….the media really caught onto the whole sexuality question.
Both guys are very talented, and everyone in that top 10 is going to be just fine…they're all winners…
Just remember though, Perez, not everyone has to be out…it's not your job, it's the decision of the individual to live the way they want to!

I'm sure there will be some stupid-@ss fallout from the 'gay community' because of it. Kris won because the viewers as a whole thought he was better. Personally, I think Adam is VERY good and has a short-but-solid career ahead of him. Kris deserved to win, and I wish him the best.

I think Adam is arrogant. He KNEW he was going to win and a few comments that he made along the way backed that up. He didn't think anyone was better than him, but he found out differently. It's fine to have a trademark, something you are known for and do better than anyone but the SCREAMING OMG you can take that too far and I think that is what turned a lot of people off! Scream once in a while not every stinking note in every song. Anyone can scream, and many can scream on key, that's not a talent. He's trying to trademark that and the thing is no one will want to buy an album if every song is that same scream over and over. I'm sorry but he is NOT a "rock n roll God" as was stated on the show. He is a great singer, minus the scream, but true rock fans know he is NOT our idea of a rock God!

The person who wrote the article is right on. Who watches American Idol, and who votes? Red states and fly over country. There was no way Adam was going to get voted in because he's not the boring, goody goody church goer like Kris is. If this were truly a contest in singing ability and performance, Adam was the winner weeks ago…but America can be very prudish and that is reflected in the winner of this Karaoke contest.

Adam's voice is good! But it's not Radio-worthy! It shouldnt have had to do with being gay or not! I am.. I voted for Kris because I would buy his album! He has a great voice and since week 1, I thought he was going to win. He fits the American-Idol Pro-type.
Adam is going to have a bright future in broadway, but as you saw him trying to keep up with the lyrics in the "No Boundaries" song that would have been on the radio… he couldn't keep up. He needs long rifts, and a song that's just full of high notes.
There are like no songs on the radio that have all long notes… like he did EVERY week (with the exception of Mad World).

This article is crap. It came down to what album people would rather buy. The truth is, Adam is talented vocally, but what kind of an album could he make? He seems better suited for a huge Broadway career.
As for Kris, his style was clear and unique and it is obvious what kind of an album he can make.
To blame Adam's loss on his past performances is ridiculous, considering he was the top vote getter almost EVERY week.
I do not care that Adam "lost" because he will be the winner in the long run. He is awesome and will be a superstar.
So…let the "winner" have his day.
He has about 364 days left on his fifteen minutes of fame….
then it is the Lambert years for years and years to come!
