Russell Simmons was appointed to be a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador on Wednesday in NYC.

The hip hop impresario's duties will include raising awareness of global slavery.
A trust fund has been launched to contruct a Permanent Memorial honoring the victims of slavery and the trans-Atlantic slave trade.
"My commitment in life is to be of service to the empowerment of young people living in struggle, who undoubtedly have been effected by this legacy. I look to the future with inspiration and faith as we work every day to bring freedom and equality to all young people around the world," said Simmons.
