After So You Think You Can Dance judge Nigel Lythgoe was slammed for his homophobic remarks regarding a same-sex dancing pair on the show's season premiere this week, Lythgoe went on quite the Twitterant!
Wrote Nigel on his official Twitter:
I hear I'm taking a beating on the web due to my comments regarding same sex ballroom I thought I was the most accepting of it on the panel?
The same sex ballroom guys did remind me of "Blades of Glory." However, I'm not a fan of 'Brokeback' Ballroom.
I am very sad the word 'homophobe' is being used. That is someone who hates homosexuals. I dislike effeminate dancing! Wake up and listen!
I believe overtly effeminate dancing destroys the opportunity for many male dancers to be supported. Being gay doesn't mean effeminate.
We have had same sex dancing on SYTYCD from Season 1. Last year Joshua and Twitch. Before that Mia's Prince's routine with Danny and Neil.
I am passionate about dancers and dancing. I am not interested in their sexual preferences only their dancing and performances. Offstage ??
Lythgoe finally took a step back to the situation and offered an apology to the gay community:
"I wholeheartedly apologize for my Brokeback Ballroom Tweet. It was insensitive, ignorant and stupid. I have upset a number of dear friends."
He can't undo the damage that's already been done!

Ok Perez, I'm usually on your side when it comes to these questions, but to be completely honest, Nigel has a point when he says effeminate does not equal gay.
His point of view probably comes from an world in which the roles of the opposite sexes have clear directions. I other words, the play on masculine/feminine.
Granted, it was clumbsy but e did appologize and just because you want him to be a homophobe, doesn't mean that he actually IS one. I know being gay is an every day struggle (even though it shouldn't have to be), standing up for your rights and fighting for equality is something you always have to do.
But not everything is black or white, and not every remark on the roles of the sexes means that there's hate or intolerance behind it, even though on a large scale the issue is about accepting people for who they are. I get it.
All I'm asking is that you ease up on the crusade and stop to think once in a while before you bash just as equally as you accuse those you think are bashing gay people.

I watched the whole clip and I was waiting for something homophobic to be said and done. After the whole clip was played, I have no idea where the homophobic remarks were. Don't you think this is a bit too much of nothing?

You couldn't tell who the male/female was supposed to be in this couple's dance, and they were both wearing the same outfit!!! To some people, that could be seen as homophobic, but no big deal has ever been made about it, because people, including some of us gays, recognize it for what it is: humor.
It seems like whenever the political landscape changes in this country, the political climate swings to the opposite direction. Even though there is still a lot of progress to be made with gays and lesbians on TV and in real life (we still never see man on man kisses on prime time network TV) we have come so far as to what can be shown on television. Thirty years ago, a show like "Will & Grace" would have most likely never been allowed on the air. Homosexuality, or presumed homosexuality, was played for laughs (i.e. "Three's Company, "Soap") or drama ("Dynasty"). I would hope that we don't go back to lame political correctness, where people have to choose their words carefully or shows have to be toned down or be family friendly, simply because we're afraid some group out there might get offended. Sometimes the whole PC movement (which I–someone who is somewhat liberal–find to be a bunch of BS) does more harm than good.

Perez also seems to forget that only one of the dancers was gay and BOTH danced as the Female. So Nigels comments were directed at a gay guy and a straight guy equally. Thus the comment was NOT directed at anyone for their sexual preference. His comment was a general comment about a male dancing as a female regardless of their sexual preference.

Those boys should have been laughed off the stage - there is a BIG difference between 2 men dancing a routine that showcases and compliments one another and the style, and 2 men dancing a routine which attempts to replace a female, feminine role in that dance with a man who is making no attempt to honour the style, tradition or intention of that role. If they wanted to dance together, ballroom was a bad choice - and they knew that. The judges were gracious under the circumstances. Additionally, I am missing the negative intent in 'brokeback ballroom'. What the fuck is wrong with that? I see no insult in using the commonly understood theme of a very good movie to make a point.

I am a two time gold medalist in same sex ballroom dancing. The problem with the comments that were made is that instead of just stating that they were not good dancers, they attributed their lack of talent to the fact that they were of the same sex. I see same sex couples dance all the time and it is a different but beautiful thing. I issue that is difficult for everyone including myself is a guy that looks like a guy and dresses like a guy try to emulate a woman. I am not fond of that either. I won't name the dancers here as most of you would know them but I saw one of the most beautiful dances performed by two men.

Perez, I'm normally right there with you. I tend to be very sensitive to insensitive remarks, but I have to say this whole thing was blown out of proportion. Did you SEE the dance those two guys did? It was pretty horrible. I don't think he said anything homophobic on he show, and I think he made his twitter remark because he felt he was being attacked for no good reason, which was insensitive and he apologized for what was necessary.
