Prop 8 Reactions: Melissa Etheridge Speaks Out

melethwenn2100758.jpg

A divided America speaks out today over the ruling of California's Supreme Court, upholding the discriminatory Prop 8, which denies gay lesbian couples access to civil marriage equality.

Singer/activist Melissa Etheridge, who just issued this statement :

"So, will anyone be sleeping better tonight? Those full of hate and fear will surely be disappointed that 18,000 same sex couples
will be living in wedded bliss, kissing their spouses goodnight, checking off those little ' married ' boxes on all those forms we fill out nowadays. That’s really going to drive them crazy. Then there are those of us like me who still dangle in ' domestic partnership. ' We can adopt our own children, but we can’t bring our partners who might be citizens from out of the country, here. We can’t file joint tax returns. I could go on. Who will be happy tonight? How do I explain this to my children? Well, you know Ellen? She is married but Mommy and I are not. That is liberty and justice for all? I am hopeful as I see more and more states turn to the inevitable future of equality, California will get there. Change takes time. "

Change does take time and the time is now!

Get involved! Let your voice be heard! Let's fight this together!

Very disappointing new this morning for ALL Americans. Just because we are straight does not mean what happened here is right. WE as HUMAN people should have the right to marry whomever we LOVE. The problem here is SOME MORONS are too busy focusing on men on men and women on women instead of GOOD OLD FASHION LOVE!!!!!

    8. 8

THREE UGLY DYKES IN A ROW!

    9. 9

Just because some people want to uphold traditional marriage doesn't mean they are filled with fear and hate…saying negative things about Americans (Californians) may actually close them off to change even more. No one likes to be bullied.

    10. 10

It's funny how everyone is all about democracy unless it works and it is not your view. Gays should have stopped protesting so much and actually went to the polls. Its over now move on.

    11. 11

So anyone who opposed gay marriage is full of fear and hate?
      Those are the rules now?

    12. Bones says – reply to this

      12

Religious people: You are hateful. Gay marriage is a civil rights issue that should NOT be subjected to people's opinions.

The STATE is secular and should NOT discriminate (not on the behalf or homophobic, religious and cultural groups). It's the tyranny of the majority.

Would the state ask Christians to decide on whether Muslims should be allowed to practice their religion, vote or hold government offices? No!

In the 1970s, 70% of Americans thought laws banning interracial marriages should be upheld. The state, rightfully so, did not listen to the public because it was a Civil Rights issue.

    13. 13

Get over it. If you can over turn a vote whenever you want whats the point. DEAL, all that would really happen if you won would be your right to fuck each other over in court with the divorce.

    14. Sho says – reply to this

      14

Why is it if you are against it, its HATE? or Fear? just becasue you are against gay marriage doesnt mean you hate anyone. Its a little dramatic dont you think?

    15. 15

So because I believe in God, I am full of hate and fear? No, I have no problems with people loving whoever but do not change the definition of marriage to suit your needs. Marriage simply is between a man and a woman, it has been that way since the beginning of time. One reason for marriage is so you can procreate, unfortunately a same-sex couple cannot do that. Yes you can adopt but that isn't the same thing. Must the word be changed? What exactly is wrong with Civil Unions? If I'm not mistaken aren't your rights the same as mine (married female)? Do whatever you please and whatever makes you happy but please leave the word marriage out of it.

      Re: tick_tock_tick_tock

No its a sad day in California. Not all states say no. Get it strait!

    17. 17

I am assuming the 18,000 that got married can file joint CA tax returns but what about Federal??
I have always been confused by this. I thought the federal gov't does not recognize gay marriage.
I am really trying to understand this part.

    18. 18

This is going to be the top subject here for months. Watch.

    19. 19

So why didn't she marry her partner when those other 18,000 same sex couples got married?

    20. 20

      Re: Bones

No one asked "christians" or "religious people" to decide anything. Blame the citizens of California for how they voted or whether or not they bothered to vote.

    21. 21

      Fudgepacker stfu.

    22. 22

i just don't understand why if you are against gay marriage you are full of hate. i have gay friends, love them, not hate. but why is it bad to be against gay 'marriage'. if my beliefs tell me it's not proper, doesn't mean i HATE. i'm totally for a cival marriage. just like folks who aren't married (man/woman) but civillay they are. why is there so much interjected HATE from the gays to those not agreed to marrige for them. it's really sad. they protest and say hateful things.

    23. 23

Celebutards and their lame followers: you tried, you lost. Now be adults and STFU. Go back to the privacy of your own home and do whatever you want there. The rest of us don't have to listen to your crap, and we don't have to respect your opinions, since you don't respect ours. Maybe its time to focus elsewere, like your navel.

    24. 24

      Re: radish

I am not 100% on this but I believe that they must recognize the laws of each state so yes, they would be allowed to file a joint federal return.

    25. 25

well said Melissa!!! its not just about the right to get married its about so much more than that and what marriage does for a family! how is it right for parents to have to explain this type of hatred and oppression to their kids! How is it right for people to be kept from visiting their partners in the hospital beause they aren't married!
      FIGHT H8!

    26. 26

Oh geez, boo hoo! Tell your children marriage is defined as btwn a man and woman. You can have the same rights but call it somehting else.

    27. Wrenn says – reply to this

      27

Well I can sleep better tonight…thank you for caring. I can sleep better knowing that my husband and I are legally married and that our children have a mother and a father and that the sanctity of marriage is still what the MAJORITY of people want in this country. 70% of the people in this country want marriage ONLY between a man and a woman…and fortunately 30% DOES NOT RULE!!!! Why does she or anyone else think they have the right to overide the will of the people????????????????

    28. 28

Perez hates straight people so he shouldn't complain.

    29. 29

Re: Bones – People Like You: Are stupid.

    30. 30

Re: Wrenn – You're wrong. 55 percent are anti gay marriage and 45 percent are for it. Luckily gay marriage is becoming legal in more and more states almost overnight. I would love to see how you react if one of your kids turns out gay.

    31. 31

      Re: TooAnnoyedTooCare

No Civil Union doesn't give you the same rights as a Federal Marriage.

You don't need to be married to procreate. And the only people I excuse that "traditional" point of view from are from the religious people that have never used a condom, that waiting to marriage for sex, and never had sex outside their wedlock….and I think that excludes MANY of the people spewing hate here and in the booths.

And I consider it "hate" because it's removing a civil right you are born with. We are all born with the rights to wed, it just happens that if you are gay and wish to wed your partner you are then prohibited by law to do so. That is removing a right.

    32. 32

Re: candycorn – Gay marriage is legal in 5 states so far…Children aren't being "taught homosexuality" I mean where is this "huge gay uprising" you are talking about?

    33. 33

How do you explain WHAT to your children? hell, two of them have David DrugDude Crosby as father, the other two who the hell knows, what difference does it make? My son's dad and I never married, we were together 29 years, so what? Melissa's first serious relationship didn't get past 10 years, this one might not either, and so what? No one needs to be married. It's an antiquated provincial institution. ZZZZ…..Oh, and the word is HATRED, not "hate," and people who vote against this don't necessarily feel "hatred." I can say I wish Melissa had adopted children rather than compelled/supported partners who had to procreate/gestate/deliver.

    34. 34

I am not afraid of gay people- when I see my gay friends I give them a hug. I do not hate them- I do not key their cars or throw eggs at their houses. Gay couples should be able to bring their partners to this country. Gay couples should be able to file joint tax returns, and adopt children. They should be able to share their lives in all the ways that the government provides protection and rights to straight couples. But it doesn't have have to be "marriage". Marriage is by the church. We should be working on a more effective solution to this problem that truly offers equal "rights" and "protections" to all couples, regardless of their orientation, and leave the term "marriage" out of it.

    35. 35

big ups for the supreme court in Cali. if the left were not such a condescending intolerant piEce of shit, they would not get the resistance to this that is happening. as for Perez, he is a hateful homo who will get exposed for the intolerant shit that he is.

    36. 36

… I hate reading these comments. They remind me of all the hate and injustice in the world.

    37. 37

Sorry, folks, but until men can naturally have babies, only OPPOSITE marriage will create full social, reproductive and economic equality.

Lesbian marriage gives women all rights to everything, and men have only one right: to pay a huge load of child support and get locked up.

All you folks who think that opposing SSM is hateful better look at the nasty attitudes of lesbians towards men. Take a look at what NOW did to men in America, and why much of Asia thinks we are screwy, and why many Muslim religions go ballistic when we sent planeloads of feminists to sell them "democracy".

The fourth wave of feminism is a crock of crap. If you back the hate the institutional feminists have for men, you are very sick.

    38. 38

I am not against the equal rights for our citizens but since she posed a question, I would also like to express that her situation certainly merits far more complicated questions to be addressed. For instance, how do you explain to your children that they have two Mommies when nature requires a mother and a father for the continuation of mankind. This is not religious, this is based on the facts of mother nature.

It IS ok that these relationships not be labeled marriage just as we can draw a distinction between differing sex acts that occur between heterosexuals as opposed to homosexual males and homosexual females. A different name doesn't imply inferiority. Just distinction. I personally would like to see civil unions for the sake of our nation with completely equal rights, but would also like to maintain that the word marriage refers to the union between a man and a woman. No different than head refering to…well, you know…and then another name for…well, use your immagination. They are both equal but have distinct names.

    39. 39

This beast gets fatter everytime I see her. Listen honey and you too fatso Perez. You lost. Get over it. America is not divided on it. It is a resounding NOOOO that I hear. Go back to gayville and live in pastel glory.

    40. 40

Well said! As long as marriage is an institution from the state, is should be accessible for all, not just for some. It's a sad day for us all, I'm glad I live in Norway where we don't discriminate towards gays. Thank you Perez for taking this fight!

    41. 41

Re: hellojessi – If "Marriage is by the church" as you say, then it should only be available for religious people, and it should not give any any civil rights.
