Si Se Puede!
Filed under: Latinolicious > Barack Obama
On Tuesday morning, President Barack Obama picked federal appeals Judge Sonia Sotomayor to be his first Supreme Court Justice appointee, succeeding retiring Justice David Souter.
If confirmed, Sotomayor, 54, would become the first Latina/Latino in the history of the U.S. Supreme Court!!!!
A graduate of Princeton University and Yale Law School, a former prosecutor and private attorney, Sotomayor became a federal judge for the Southern District of New York in 1992. She grew up in the Bronx in a housing project after her parents moved to New York from Puerto Rico. She has dealt with diabetes since age 8 and lost her father at age 9, growing up under the care of her mother in humble surroundings.
Congratulations, Sonia!

I think you mean "nominee", dear. Lord help us if the president just decides he can start "appointing" people to the Supreme Court. Remember Harriet Meyers?
helo, from New Zealand!
We are taking over!
thank
God
he
picked
a woman///
whoohoooooooooo
wherez
the
demon
pic of me?????????????
I'm glad Obama is working to make our government as dynamic as the people of the country it serves.
Miguel Estrada should have been the first Latino…
George Bush shouldd have been able to choose his own circut judges without the partisan politics of the democrats interfering more than was ever intended by our founding fathers….it's ADVISE and CONSENT…not filibuster and deny!!
The democrats just wanted to be the first to appoint a Hispanic
Fantastic. Now if only Obama could make home interest rates negotiable. Yeah, yeah, it says they're doing that in the papers but n-o-t true:(
Damn she is FUGLY, so when did a celebrity blog become political. perez you are FAT and your site is getting BORING!!!
I am glad for Sonia. She came had a tough upbringing, and look how far she has come. She deserves to be on the Supreme Court. Congrats to her.
I hope to god she doesnt get appointed. I voted for Obama but have been highly disappointed with who he has appointed to offices. Ron Sims was my County Executive–he must have an "in" with Obama because he was named for many positions. That said, King County, where I live, is in shambles. Ron Sims is less responsible than Paris Hilton, yet Obama had him named for at least 2 hihgpower positions- head of HUD and now he is in the transportation dept. Seattle has, like everyone else, HORRIBLE housing and our transportation is pathetic. We are in trouble with people at the helm who have a history of failure.
And now Sonia. NOT good. This woman is emotional, illiterate and an embarassment of a pick. She flies off the handle at the drop of a dime. If you looked up professionalism in the dictionary a picture of her face with a line through it would be there.
Having a dynamic cabinet (Ron Sims is a Black man, Sonia is Latina) is FABULOUS. But pick people who deserve to be there and who lead America. Do not pick for surface level reasons, which is clearly the case with Ron Sims, so why would this HORRID nominee for the Supreme Court be any different? Oh Obama, I dont want to not like you…but you are making it so easy lately!!
What I think is funny is that she is a devout Catholic and your gay ass probably disgusts her.
Re: nicholaii –
Hello, Nicholaii…can you say Alberto Gonzales or Condi Rice or Elaine Chao or Colin Powell?? That's just a few….
And he tried for Miguel Estrada, but the Democrats filibustered him!
George Bush had the most diverse cabinet in history … he just didn't get credit for it
Who didn't see this coming? Even the more liberal media outlets are saying Sotomayor isn't the most qualified out of the named possibilities. La Raza must have paid big to get this nominee for their cause.
My friends what we are seeing today is the slow but sure destruction of this once great country. The day that a dog catcher from Chicago can win the Presidency to this nomination surely tells us that we are doomed in the US. God please save of from this moron in the white house.
YAY TACOS
Sounds a little like you, except she has a brain.
Excellent choice! It's so nice to have an intelligent man in the white house for a change and not the filthy, low-life hillbilly, redneck trash that was there for 8 years. Now we can rebuild this country into one that respects everyone and is inclusive!
we latinos are taking ova!!!! lolzz
As a double minority and going thru all that it is really a huge success story. Way to go and good luck!!
This is really good news.
A true American success story. This is the land of opportunity where anything is possible. Congratulations to Ms. Sotomayor.
she is the first FEMALE hispanic on the court, the first was actually Benjamin N. Cardozo. its just that he was a european hispanic, so he's often forgetten.
….that aside she seems ok
except that she went to Yale, I am so sick of almost everyone in power being from either Harvard or Yale, they look out for each other, these Hardvard and Yalies, its sick, they run the world, and exclude others. Once again, those who went to the elite universities just looking out for each other, whats new?
just once….once, how about we pick someone who went to a State school, or God forbid a community college, that would be real diversity!
That's great news!
Si se puede?!?!?!…….. pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!! pero debemos no!!!!
felicidades!
You forgot to add that she believes in making decisions based on her personal experiences as a Latina woman (SC judges are supposed to be non-biased) and she thinks the SC creates policy. IT DOESN'T, IT ONLY INTERPRETS CURRENT LAWS.
This is freakin awesome!!! See…we know how to do more things than just make babies! j/k
Si se puede y si se pudo!!!!!
Una mujer! Latina!
Felicidades
Re: Club80 – La Raza is a term used by Chicanos not Puerto Ricans….. Let's just hope she isn't like most PR Bronx reared politicians.
Re: ghee99 – Spaniards are europeans…hispanics are those indigenous american tribes that were conquered by the Catholics and europeans and forced to adopt their culture and religions.. Brazil= Portuagese and the rest of South America= Spaniards. Spaniards = European= caucasian. Puerto Rican= hispanic or the more appropriate term… Mestizo
President Obama has my full respect. What a wonderful choice to nominate a woman and a member of the American-Hispanic community.
I noticed you FAILED to mention that she was apponited to the Fed bench by PRESIDENT GEORGE H.W. BUSH. Guess that was just an over sight on your part. Hum……seem like HE was inclusive before that became a catch phrase. Guess YOU should be thanking HIM!!!!!
PUERTORRIQUEÑA PUÑETA ESO ESSS! I'm so grateful that a woman, and most of all of Puertorican roots has been chosen to help make a change. And to all those throwing racist and lame latin remarks: GTFO! She's an example not only to latin women and the latin community but to all women and the world. Here's some education for you all kids, this is an education your getting!
Re: McPhatty – tienes problemas con la sintaxis de tu frase!!! learn to write spanish if you're gonna apply it somewhere!
Re: SugarMagnolia – damn! If graduating from Princeton AND Yale = illiterate… I wanna be illiterate too!
I think it's a little early to judge President Obama's choice, let's see the outcome and THEN criticize.
Re: nicholaii – I second that!!
i think it's awesome President Obama had the courage to nominate Mindy Cohn to the Supreme Court.
Look what happens when Latinos go to College. lol
this is the one of the most wonderful things barack is doing. he is appointing and selecting qualified people from all walks of life and this in turn will make a government that trully represents its constituents.
felicitaciones, juez!
I, too, was raised in a housing project in the Bronx. Two of my sisters attended Cardinal Spellman H.S., just like Justice Sotomayor. I adore the NY Yankees baseball team, who she sided with in a 1995 ruling. I am filled with pride that this striver has gotten the attention of our Commander in Chief. Her numerous colleagues in the legal profession attest to her ethics, intellect and humanity. It is wonderful news that Sotomayor is the next SCOTUS nominee. Go, Boricua.
She is ugly
Re: LilaLane – Soy capaz de escribir en español, la broma es en la forma en que está escrito. Sí podemos, pero no deberíamos.
A nitpicker,
yes you are,
moist behind the ear,
and easily offended,
do you take it in the rear,
or do we find you up-ended,
Simply splendid is the decision,
Only to your biased eye.
I think she could be an inspiration to all Latinos/as hoping to study and practice law one day, but her ethnicity is by no means, a measure of her fitness for the job. Hello, Clarence Thomas anyone? Sure, an African-American on the court is inspiring but does anyone actually agree with his decisions? She should be chosen based on her ability to rule fairly, not her ethnicity. And from all accounts, she is a hot-headed bully and none of her fellow justices respect nor like her.
That's My Aunt!!! YEAHHH!!!!
Yes !!!! We are moving on up . We need more latinos in the united states goverment .
Okay, who wants to tell Perez FINALLY that most "Latinos" don't consider Puerto Ricans (or Cubans for that matter) to be real Hispanics? Sotomayor has no relevance to our Mexican and Central American citizens. Just ask one.
Re: njpaul129 – Don't let the door hit ya in the ass on the way out shitwad!
One more minority who was given an ivey league education (yes -GIVEN - she didn't pay for it) who wants to punish white America for all the past racial inequalities she "thinks" she has suffered from. Where is the gratefulness? Where is the "get down on your knees" and praise this country for "gifting" you with this opportunity. She makes me sick.
Damnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn!!! That's awesome! About TIME Obama did something for us latino's! Next? Immigration reforms!!
love her
Awesome!
