Jane Fonda Explains Mug Shot

On her blog, Jane Fonda recalls the story behind the iconic 1970 mugshot of the actress.

En route to an antiwar speaking engagement at a college campus in Ohio, Fonda's bag was confiscated in the Cleveland airport because of three envelopes containing Fonda's vitamins for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Authorities arrested her for drug smuggling in what Fonda believes was a smear campaign to hurt her nationwide speaking tour.

My first speech was given at a college in Canada and when I re-entered the US at the Cleveland airport all my luggage was seized and gone through. They discovered a large bag containing little plastic envelopes marked (in red nail polish) ‘B’, ‘L’, ‘D’–signifying breakfast, lunch and dinner- that contained the vitamins I took with each meal. They confiscated that as well as my address book (which was photocopied) and arrested me for drug smuggling. I told them what they were but they said they were getting orders from the White House–that would be the Nixon White House. I think they hoped this “scandal” would cause the college speeches to be canceled and ruin my respectability. I was handcuffed and put in the Cleveland Jail, which is when the mug shot was taken. (I had just finished filming “Klute” so, yes, it was the Klute haircut).

Headlines across the country had the story of me being jailed on suspicion of drug smuggling. I was released on bond and months later, after every pill had been tested in a lab (with taxpayers money!) The charges were dismissed and there were a few paragraphs hidden in the back of papers that they were vitamins, not drugs.

The sensational headlines backfired though, and the college audiences were never less than 2000 and sometimes as large as 10,000.

But the striking mugshot still remains!

Had we been "technically at war", Hanoi Jane would have been executed for treason.

    17. 17

she went to Viet-Nam and when P.O.W.s tried to give her secret info she's
hand that info. over to the captors which would get the P.O.W.s in trouble.

She could have really helped. She was lame.

    21. 21

she is a communist, not an icon. know the facts before you start calling her a "legend."

      Fonda…who ever cared

    23. 23

All of the younger generation should look up in history at what this woman did during the Vietnam war before saying she is "awesome"…she still has the blood of true Americans on her hands…theres a special spot in hell for traitors like her…

    24. 24

Hanoi Jane… people can't forgive or forget what you did.

    25. 25

Love her. Screw all you haters

    26. 26

    28. 28

      Hot!

    29. 29

Fuck her. Why would you post about this bitch? She is a fucking communist pig. My husband has a Screw Jane Fonda sticker on his car. What she did was a slap in the face to anyone who has ever served in the military. Fuck you, Perez!

    30. 30

Are you kidding me? Hanoi Jane deserves to rot in jail. That traitorous bitch! I'm 19 and I know what a disgusting, filthy person she is. Buddying up with the North Vietnamese and protesting our fucking soldiers, I can't fucking stand her.

    31. 31

She is a traitor to her nation and should have been tossed in jail for a very long time. I can't stand this piece of shit. She provided aid and comfort to the enemy plain and simple. It doesn't matter if she was right or wrong, or what her views were, she did in fact help the other side. She should be ashamed.

every vet in the US hates her and they will never forgive her. No matter what or who you are you are American first. Say what you want in this country, but when we are in a war and thousands of Americans are dying daily, you don't go hang out with the enemy; don't matter if you agree with her or not. There are still a lot of vets that would like to drag her thru the streets and I couldn't blame them.

    33. 33

shes incredibly beautiful- even now. i lovvvve jane fonda

    34. 34

Her picture is also in the Communist Museum in Vietnam as gratitute for all she did for them. This is a woman who sided with the communists and trashed and condenm the American Soldiers. The comunists in Vietnam were so grateful that gave her a ring made from an American tank that they destroyed. She accepted it.

Fonda should be in jail for treason. Better, she should be executed for crimes against her country.-

      Shes one baad mammajamma.

    37. 37

Who cares about this commie traitor… We should have left her pajama wearing ass in Vietnam when we had the chance!!!!CUN*!!!!

    38. 38

Jane Fonda is a piece of shit. She supported North Vietnam in their fight against the U.S. and later claimed the tomahawk chop the Braves did was "more of a patty cake thing".

    39. 39

dont call this idiot a legend people. she was a dumb young actress that caused allot of grief to all vietnam vets. u all need to research what an idiot she was and probably still is before calling her a legend.

    42. 42

      Commie traitor bitch!

    43. 43

Remember, whether you like what she did or said, we fought that war to make sure we are free, as American Citizens, to do the things she did. That does not mean that I agreed with what she did. (My brother in law used to say the antiwar rallies were the best place to sell Heroin. This xxx introduced my sister to it. Guess which side i was on???) I do wonder how many of the people who hate her so are aware of what has happened in her life in the last few years. I think you'd be very surprised.

    44. 44

Ah what a SELLOUT she is. First Ted Turner. Then L'Oreal.

    45. 45

I love Jane, always have, always will… and all my youth friends too (they are so many!).

    46. 46

Re: tayberrryz – If you are only 19, what can you know for real about those horrible days? Who have told you about it? You must probably feel the same way those poor kids felt (at your age) at that time… and I mean the both sides kids.
Who was right or wrong, anyway? The very war??? Who should lose, who should win?…come on! Let our star out of this crap!
      We love you Jane!

    47. 47

I still feel grateful for what Jane Fonda did for this country. She put herself and her career at great risk by speaking out. We should all be this courageous.

We should all have risked more to rid ourselves of the Cheney-Bush dictatorship that we lived under for 8 long years. They succeeded in driving this country to the brink of economic collapse and world scorn. All in the name of profits for Cheney's company, Halliburton.

    48. 48

People should know that when this bitch was in Vietnam hanging out with the people who were running prisoner camps where American citizens were being tortured and killed, one of them asked her quietly to please call his family to tell them that he was still alive. What was her response? She immediately busted the American soldier prisoner to the head of the camp, who proceeded to torture the man even worse. She was known for doing that sort of hideous stuff - that is why veterans hate her, and people should realize just what is in the soul of that evil creature.

    49. 49

Re: former M fan – No, she was neither. She became the poster whipping girl for the far right. She spoke up against war and senseless death; so where, pray tell, is the 'shame' in that? The shame's all yours, buddy.

    50. 50

I thought this bitch died years ago!!! Damn zombies……..

    51. 51

They should have kept "Hanoi Jane" locked up forever. Her actions caused immense pain to our troops and much comfort to the enemy. She should have been tried for treason. Get this scum off of the website.

      Re: Hapepupe
Jane Fonda knowingly fraternized with the enemy (North Vietnemese) during the Vietnam War, posed for publicity pictures with the Communist soldiers as part of her protest against US involvement in the Vietnam War. No matter what you say about her anti-war efforts then and now, what she did at that time was and is treason, she caused harm to US soldiers in combat, US prisoners of war, and their families at home. Americans have the freedom of expression to protest any government action, thanks to the brave men and women who have fought for those freedoms, but when you knowingly step onto enemy territory and trash your government in time of war, there should be expected consequences. I understand Ms. Fonda has attempted to make reparations to service men and women in past years and should deserve some consideration for that, however the Vietnam era vets who will forever remember Hanoi Jane have the right to use her as their poster child of a nation that has never properly shown them gratitude.

    54. 54

fuck all you paranoid lunatics. go suck off dick cheney or something
      god i love this woman

    55. 55

everyone talking shit about her is ridiculous. come the fuck off it. our government cannot tell us who to befriend and who not to befriend. just because our leaders say it's right for us to go into a country and slaughter its people doesn't mean we all have to conform to that agenda and therefore deny ourselves the human-born right of free will. fuck all of you.
