A little bit of history has died.
Millvina Dean, the last known survivor of the Titanic, passed away on Sunday at 97 years young.
Although Dean was just an infant when the ship sank, she was extremely involved with Titanic enthusiasts and historians over the past three decades.
She survived the tragedy along with her younger brother and mother but did not discover that she was aboard the ship until she was 8 years old.
Dean's death fell on May 31, exactly 98 years after the Titanic was launched.

Hey Scarez, congratulations! You made it onto Dickipedia! and rightfully so.
Aww
Some of these details are not right… check it. the titanic sunk in April, how would it have been launched in May??? and she was 2 months old when it sank… how would she have a younger brother??
sad
was she born on the titanic? how could she be 97 and the ship have been launched 98 years ago?
This is the woman James Cameron, Leo, & KAte gave $10,000.00 a piece to, right? Like I said when they did it like a month ago… nothing like waiting til the last minute
seriously perez, this was on yahoo news like yesterday. your 'juice' is past it's expiration date.
RIP. BTW, though the AP initially had the date wrong, this year marked the 97th anniversary of the ship's launch. Which is how a 97 year old woman was alive for its "98th" anniversary. It launched in 1912. If you are going to steal other people's articles, check their research, then you can at least be the first to get the scoop correct.
How could she be 97 if the Titanic sank 98 years ago? Also, how could her younger brother have been on board if neither of them were born at that point?
titanic sank on april 12th.
The titanic set sail on April 10th, I know because it is my birthday. Its always on the list of famous events on my birthdate.
Its her older brother dummy. She was 9 weeks old when the ship sank. How could he be younger? This is horrible get your damn facts straight you idiot
Re: areyougellison –
Her mom could have been pregnant with her younger brother.
Indeed, the date is wrong! The construction of the Titanic started on the 31st of MARCH in 1909, and the ship sank on April 14th, 1912, 4 days after she started her maiden voyage.
Plus, her brother was actually older than her by two year.
AND, this was reported yesterday. A little late Perez!
omg thats so sad and wierd that she died on the anniversary of the launch…
!!
HER HEART WILL GO ON
I was gonna say what abcdefghik said as well as if she died at 97 then how did she die 98 years after the Titanic sank… this is ALL very sketchy! where is your fact checker Perez??
P.S. yesterday was my birthday… we you out celebrating my birthday and got carried away you naughty minx?? lol
I was gonna say what abcdefghik said as well as if she died at 97 then how did she die 98 years after the Titanic sank… this is ALL very sketchy! where is your fact checker Perez??
P.S. yesterday was my birthday… we're you out celebrating my birthday and got carried away you naughty minx?? lol
ACTUALLY PEREZ IS RIGHT TITANIC WAS LAUNCHED ON MAY IN 1911 AND SET SAIL A YEAR LATER ONLY TO BE SANK 4 DAYS AFTER.
is she going to be buried at sea?
Bet she saw A LOT of changes in America over her lifetime!! RIP Millvina Dean!
Re: areyougellison – Clearly you're not good at math, nor logic. Titanic was launched in May the year BEFORE it sunk. She wasn't completed yet, but her hull and all the mechanics were done and taken off dry dock.
May 31st was not when the Titanic was launched. It sank on April 14th… Duuuh.
I heard of it yesterday and it's just a remorse because she's the only link we had to Titanic and perhaps a great woman herself. I wished I'd met her. At last, all souls it carried has all rested in peace. Fuck that boat mehn.
f.y.i: It's her OLDER brother and not younger, whos 2 years older than her.
The insanely incorrect details and absurd math in this post is giving me a headache! Seriously, you need some fact checkers for this site! Did no one notice how off the math is?! The ship was launched 98 years ago and she was on it and an infant, but she just died at 97 AND had a YOUNGER brother who was also on the ship??!! How did this make it to post without someone noticing something HAD to be wrong??!! WOW!
To all of you who are trying to sound like you know things and tell Perez that he is wrong, you're all damn idiots. If you would do any research at all you would see that the ship was indeed launched on May 31, 1911 once its construction was completed. That does not mean the day it set sail. Just launched from the building phase. So yes, she did indeed die on the 98th anniversary of Titanic's launch. You bunch of ignorant people.
why do you have to always emphasize a persons age by saying they are X number of years "young" ? This is a silly backhanded term that makes them feel older than dirt, actually.
Oh bless her soul.
RIP.
R.I.P ;(
launched in may sank in april??? doesn't add up ladies and gents… lets do some research
Damn. That's deep.
To all the skeptics:
The ship launch in 31 May 1911 refers to the launching of the hull, not the maiden voyage, which was in 10 April 1912.
That is how Millvina Dean was indeed a baby during the maiden voyage and died at the age of 97.
"It's been 84 years… and I can still smell the fresh paint.
The china had never been used. The sheets had never been slept in.
Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams. And it was. It really was…"
The Titanic sank in April, dude…
aww i almost cried when i saw this on the news…. that movie made me soo sad… and i read about all the books about the titanic….
"A little bit of history has died." Indeed, RIP. But the dates are wrong Perez
r.i.p.
Wait a second…if she died at 97…and the ship sank 98 years ago…how was she an infant when the ship sank?? She wouldn't have been born…
Either way, she had a good run. Rest in peace.
Re: galleon10 – Thank you for clarifying that. I was going to comment that the "launch" was not the same as the maiden voyage date. RIP Millvina
Re: areyougellison – l.m.a.o!!! So glad you caught that too. Maybe he was in the womb when it happen!???
Awwww, R.I.P.
God bless her! She was a neat lady - I remember seeing her on CNN back in 1998 when "Titanic" mania was at its height. She seemed very humble and normal and was pretty sharp for being in her mid 80s at the time.
how weird.. i looked this up and she died in her sleep as an old lady.. peacefull and such.. just like how jack told rose in the movie.. and then on the launching of titanic… that's unbelievable.
RIP Millvina, Titanic's story will never be forgotten, and you were a part of that, so neither will you. And yeah, Titanic launched 97, not 98 years ago. I wonder if her ashes will be spread over the site of the sinking?
