Targeting Pearl Jam

You know, selling out isn't very grunge.

However, it's rough times for everyone!

Pearl Jam is planning on recording a Target commercial in promotion of their new album - due out some time this year.

The reasoning stems from the fact that the legendary band intends to released their newest album independently, without any label backing whatsoever. Therefore, they need to distribute to multiple partners.

And Target is cool with that!

Kelly Curtis, manager of Pearl Jam since day one, explains: "Target ended up allowing us to have other partners. We'll be able to take care of all levels of the Pearl Jam fan…We wish we could tell the whole story right now, but all the deals aren't done. Target was cool enough to realize that little independent record stores are not their competition."

Guess it is better than going back to Sony with your tail between you legs. But this better be one hell of an album.

      How is this selling out?
They're making a bunch of deals to get the album to fans without a record company.

    2. 2

Making a commercial for Target is not selling out! As their manager said, they're looking out for their fans. Like they always have.

you speak like PEARL JAM might put out a bad album, and trump fucking talentless wastes of space musical atrocities like heidi montag? boooooo, perez.

and pearl jam is the only band to even try to tour without using ticketmaster. they are hardly sellouts. not that you'd understand NOT being a sellout.

I think it's fair of them to make deals like this. You have to in order to put your album in stores. Sadly, they know that people don't really go to independent record stores anymore, so they needed to find another venue. My only concern is this: I haven't bought an actual CD in YEARS! I think the last CD I bought was "American Idiot" 5 years ago. I wonder if the new album will be available on iTunes. Anybody know?

P.S. I CAN'T WAIT TO HEAR THEIR NEW STUFF ON CONAN TONIGHT!

It's great to see how people actually know about everything this band does to make their music as assessable to the fans as possible. They are absolutely amazing, talented, and have done so much to make this world a better place. I love PJ and cannot wait to see them on Connan tonight!

    20. 20

PJ are my fav band…Greatest rock band…Anyway, it isnt selling out, it is taking control. Of course, it is going to be a great album. They take care of their fans, low concert ticket prices, reasonable prices on albums, etc. They will always have my heart & back.

    22. 22

they're not selling out. settle down, perez. don't talk trash about the mighty PJ.

    23. 23

Looking out for their fans, as always. I hope I get to see them live again soon.

    24. 24

Like it or not Perez is right and PJ sold out. I read about this deal at another site and they are gearing up to sell their cd at Target while getting deals with mobile carriers and a gaming company. If that's not the definition of selling out, I don't know what is. Damn, first the Fat Boys broke up, then Metallica sold out, now Pearl Jam…there's just nothing to believe in anymore…
Well, think of it this way, PJ didn't sell out, they just bought in.

    25. 25

And now my better half… has turned to TAR-JAY!!!!!!

Pearl Jam is not selling out! If they were selling out they would try and squeeze as much money as they could out of fans, record companies, etc. They are looking out for their fans which shows integrity and love for the music not the fame. Pearl Jam has always made amazing music and has shown appreciation for their fans. It is a shame that more bands can't be like Pearl Jam. They will forever be one of the greats! Keep on rockin'!
