Jon & Kate Piss Off American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry
Gosselin mania continues on with no end in sight! You know you love it!
Besides the show's constant tabloid attention and an investigation into child labor laws, now Jon and Kate Gosselin are being slammed for their parenting by professional minds
Dr. Michael Brody of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry was interviewed to discuss his opinions on the mental ramifications the Gosselin children will suffer because of their involvement with the reality show.
He insists that the constant presence of video cameras is damaging to the children's early development. He suggests they grow up never feeling they can be "genuine", since a camera will always be there to catch their actions as well as creating attention seekers:
"After a while these kids become knowledgeable, but it's not genuine. I think that this is where the problem lies. It's not genuine and you're fostering this craving for attention, which can create trouble later on."
The biggest problem Dr. Brody foresees is the resentment the kids will feel when they've grow and watch their childhood was played out on television for money. It is this idea of exploitation that motivated Kate's younger brother, Kevin Kreider , to bring the subject up to Kate and Jon. He told CBS' Early Show that the couple told him: "'This is how we're going to provide for them.'"
Again, Dr. Brody insists this is wrong: "It is not normal for five and eight year olds to support their family…This family, like other families on reality TV, is working to support the brand and so forth. Aren't there all kinds of products and stuff that these people support? It's wrong. It's a commercialization of children."
Finally, he slams Jon and Kate for not seeing the big picture and realizing that they have pushed their kids into a life they never had the chance to decline"
"These kids don't have any say in this. They are helpless. They have to do what their parents say."

I think they will be normal. They are just on a TLC show, not a shock reality show where disrespect towards parents is encouraged. The two older girls seem to be doing well and they had cameras in their face since they were 4 or 5. Plus, this media blitz won't last for that much longer- reality shows about families have a shelf life of 4 years if that.
Why didn't the doc also mention other "reality" shows with children?

Don't get me wrong..I like watching their show. But somehow I think those kids will grow up to be spoiled brats. They are so used to getting everything handed to them. They get to go anywhere and everywhere on the house. When this show is over and the money stops coming in, they'll have to adapt to the simple life of having to save money to go anywhere or do anything special. I hear everything from clothes, trips, food, etc are donated to them from all over. What will happen when all that stops?

I am a big fan of the show - or used to be until all of this broohaha started, and I believe that when they first started out, they genuinely wanted to document life with a family of multiples. Now, it seems they have been sucked into the same hole that other reality show folks have and now believe they are celebrities. What a crock - OK, they have a popular show and the kids are adorable (except for Mady - what a B! But as far as the "experts" are concerned, excuse me, but if I'm not mistaken, since when do children get any control over their lives? Until they are adults, children pretty much do what their parents want them to - right or wrong. I think the older ones are more guarded than when the show first started, but the little ones don't seem to notice anything out of the ordinary since their lives have been documented since they were babies. As for how they will behave in the future, that depends on how Jon and Kate behave with them now when they are off camera. I think they can still have somewhat normal ubringings if the parents handle it correctly. Whatever infidelity has or has not happened, the parents still need to present a united front for the kids until they make a decision to stay together or split. That's when the lifelong issues will begin to surface.
I think this Doctor is correct! Not only do the kids not have a say in how their life is broadcasted for everyone to see, but they will grow up not having any sense of real being. They will constantly think that every move they make or any decision made, will need to be made with the help of someone else….since they haven't had to do anything without being "viewed". They will have low self esteem, and probably have major anxiety. That being said..who doesn't have anxiety or low self esteem these days?

A TV program is a TV program, TLC or not. These children are in fact speaking some scripted lines along with unscripted and selling products for sponsors. Besides the work aspect, that is actually not the part that messes up children in entertainment, though cameras do alter lives and behavior regardless. It's the fame and recognition they face, just as any other child in the business does, that is what causes the damage in the long run as they can't go through life anonymous like anyone else. As for the older girls doing well, I remember back when I actually watched that show, that Maddy's behavior was anything but healthy and normal and the behavior of the older ones will have a trickle effect on the younger ones. She was one of the most miserable children I've ever seen. Major behavioral problems already.
Just read any story about multiples in this country in the past century whose parents decided to make them celebrities and see how they turned out. Each one downspiraled drastically and the Gosselin children will as well.
Parents need to start taking responsibility for their children's lives and place them above greed and the public needs to start taking responsibility for what they watch and the implications of those choices on the families involved and society at large.

Jon and Kate have crap going btwn them, but so does half of the population, SO many regular parents get divorced so why is it so difficult to comprehend that they might be having marital problems that won't result in their children being on coke and hooking??? And as if they're the only show to include children. TLC has other shows including kids, and not to mention all the celebrity reality shows that feature their children. Should we forbid celebrities from having children because their kids are constantly exposed to tabloids, media attention, as well as having absolutely everything handed to them on a silver platter, fly in private jets and live in mansions???
If you were a 10 member family with regular paying jobs and you were given the opportunity to give your EIGHT children a bigger home and yard to enjoy, show them a world outside their house, and not worry about paying for EIGHT college tuitions, like hell you wouldn't do it.
AND they film 3 days a week and it's the same crew so it's not as horrible as people are making it seem. Psychiatry is a bullshit profession….everyone knows psychiatrists have the most messed up kids.

If they had multiples and decided not to share it with the public, those kids could very well be in a worse situation- poverty, neglect, abuse…

I think these kids are going to have definate problems. Look at other families who were involved in reality shows (Hogan Knows Best and The Osbournes) to name two. If you can't afford to have that many children then you shouldn't bring them into the world. It is not the kids responsibilty to provide for the family. The older child of the litter ( I think her name is MaddieI already seems to be turning into an attention seeking brat.
Who knows how any kids will turn out? I guess if the kids ever said they didn't want to do it or told their parents they didn't want to be filmed, I'll bet Jon and Kate would quit. Mady already seems like she hates it. They seem like normal kids to me though. We never see them at school, etc., so they do have a lot of time away from cameras. Just leave them alone and watch their show if you want to and if you don't, dont!

I find it more than interesting that all of these shots are being taken at Jon & Kate in regard to their 8, while not a word is being said about TLC and its decision to put this reality show and others on their programming. How do these experts actually know the consequences of this kind of childhood fame when it hasnt ever been studied in this particular capacity. Sure we have looked at child actors, but these kids are involved in a reality show. That is very different. I think that people always want to give their opinion, but that doesnt make it right. If these kids are doomed, are Octo-Moms? 18 and counting? Denise Richards children? I wish that people would just leave this family alone. I really do.
Anyone saying all children have to do what their parents say, that's not the problem. The problem and obvious argument referred to is that the choices those parents are making are negative ones, and when children are forced to live out a certain lifestyle their parents want to their detriment, then it becomes a public concern. If in fact those choices they must blindly follow are problematic, which they are, then everyone has a reason for being concerned and disturbed. That said, need I remind some of you that money doesn't bring happiness. Those children might get a few more toys or take a trip or two, but what does it matter when their lives are going to be destroyed and they will never know a childhood of privacy and normality that every child deserves? Just ask any spoiled kid, it didn't bring them lasting internal happiness to have all of that. I know, I'm one of them. And I would have gladly given it all up to have had my parents make different decisions. As for college tuitions, anyone kidding themselves into thinking they will have the money for that years from now because of all of this is living in delusion. Jon and Kate are spending a mile a minute, on expensive hair styles, a new sports car, eating at five star celebrity restaurants - these are not the actions of people saving up for their children's education. Wake up.
If they did not do the show, they both would be working like 80 hours a week each to attempt to support the children - and someone else would be raising their kids. I don't think people should have kids unless they can afford them, and that includes all you people who pay someone else to take care of your kids while you're at work. Don't have them unless you plan to raise them!

Just because Jon and Kate have no conscience, doesn't mean that we shouldn't.
I have hope for them if they get away from their mother. Jon is a loving father. They are smart kids and if they get off tv and get some privacy and therapy, I think they will be all right. HOWEVER, they need to stop filming or else these kids will be messed up.
Shoot, it's hard enough to have a "normal" childhood, let alone one like this. I think they'll all have problems. Very sad.

Kate couldn't get pregnant because she has polycystic ovarian syndrome so she did in vitro and had the twins. They then decided for a THIRD child because they had decent paying jobs where they could afford 3 children. When they found out she'd be having multiples, they couldn't eliminate them to leave 1 (and most people would do the same thing, how do you pick which of the babies you'll get rid of??). So stop pulling bullshit out of your ass and learn your facts before talking bout them. Or would you prefer if she grew a new pair of ovaries instead??
Everyone is commenting on the likely availability of funds for the children to attend college and I agree that there should be adequate funding available.
I worry, though, that there will be a higher than average likelihood that these children will not need a college education because they will not have the mental capacity to necessitate higher education. They are, I admit, the cutest kids ever, but, in many respects they are not at age level of motor or vocabulary skills. They are still wearing bibs to eat, the boys took an inordinately long time to potty train, none of them can cut with scissors. I do not believe that anyone reads to them either. My grandchildren want stories at all hours of the day and night and have sat still for the reading since before they could actually sit. You learn to love reading at a very early age and carry books around as your friends if those books are in the house. I have seen Kate read one book and that was because it was a product sponsor. I hope that they need college, but, the incidence of Slow Learning Disability is much higher in High Order Multiples and we won't know about that until they get into school.
Hard to say what'll happen but these kids don't know anything BUT a camera in their face. Take that away and then see what happens.
I've been watching Jon & Kate Plus 8 since the very first episode, 5 years ago. This show is really reality and they both are not evil money hungry people at all. The children are not being forced to do anything. They love it, or they would never talk to the camera guys that film them, the way they do. For them being in the public eye it's no difference than some children who have famous parents. This whole thing is being blown up, it's ridiculous how far people go for a "story". If you were given 30,000 dollars, you'd probably say anything too.

and got pregnant the old fashioned way in order to produce High Order Multiples. At her next appointment, she was already pregnant with 7 fertilized eggs. One of those eggs spontaneously aborted and was absorbed back into her uterus. Don't fool yourself that Kate didn't know what she was doing. She was a Labor and Delivery Nurse and her mother states that she was fixated on the McCaughey Septuplets all through high school and carried their book around with her everywhere. I do not think the High Order Multiples were much of a surprise. They probably tried the same thing with the twins pregnancy but without success. Kate got IUI after only being married for 3 months and without knowing if she could get pregnant or not. POS does not preclude getting pregnant.
You are correct about Kate's POS (Polycistic Ovarian Syndrome) but she Did Not have IVF, she had Intra Uterine Insemination. The ovaries are stimulated with drugs to produce More Eggs on their own. She was hospitalized prior to getting pregnant with the 6 babies for having her ovaries OVER STIMULATED producing too many eggs at once. The doctor told her that he would not fertilize her eggs at that time because there were too many eggs in her uterus. Kate went home with her overstimulated eggs (probably

Their mother is providing for them the best way that she can. In time, her kids will appreciate what she has done for them. Some say that the children had no choice to be brought to the limelight, but what about the children who had no say in being born to an irresponsible or a truly selfish mother. Kate can be a bit mean and naggy to her husband, but she has the "realest" reality show on TV, you can see that she is a good, strong and loving mom.

First of all… these kids will have about the same shot at a normal life as any child performer from a broken home. I don't care if they are just being normal or not they will not know how to adjust to being just regular kids once the cameras are finally turned off. There are groups and individuals who have been focused on the exploitation of these children for years, but, no one would listen until the tabloid frenzy happened over their sex lives. Check out GWOP or Kate is a Shrew or A Minor Consideration or the Reading Eagle Archives from the time the babies were born…It's an eye opener what their own community thought of the pair almost from the start. All we can do is pray for this family now

I just started watching the show last year, but I, too, thought it was strange that she went straight to a fertility doctor with being so young, newly married and not "trying" for very long. I tried getting pregnant for years, as most doctors back then made you wait before doing fertility treatment. I thought it just seemed like they didn't want to wait very long to have a family and actually wanted multiples. I think there are a lot of fertility doctors now who bend the usual rules about waiting, age, etc.
For the record, I don't think she is crazy. I know a mom just like her and her kids are the best behaved, articulate and smartest kids I know. Kate is just extremely structured. Her fear of her kids getting "dirty" or "messy" though does border on phobia.

The Gosselin children are only filmed one or two days a week, and never while theyre at school. Theyre going to end up perfectly fine, and if one or two of them arent, its not because of the show. One or two out of eight children in america are fucked up anyways.

When they reach 18 they will not remember any of this and other 18 year olds their future peers will not remember this show or anything that's happening with all these tabloids. It's FUCKING RIDICULOUS to think so just shut the fuck up! All these fucking experts don't know shit and want to get their 15 minutes. I'm so sick of hearing about this! They are tons of reality shows with children. The Duggars, Table for 12, Little People, Big World, Run's House, Gottis Way and the list goes on and on and on. If they are guilty of selling their children as a "product" like these assholes are trying to say then every single one of us are guilty of buying. You can't say you haven't watched their show or read a tabloid about them or read anything online about them then you are lying.
I was glad to see that this season the kids bedrooms are off limits to cameras so they can have a little privacy. If they weren't prepared to financially provide for this many children, then they shouldn't have had them. How are they any better than Octomom?

I think Kate is bat shit crazy! Have you seen the episodes where she yells at Jon like he's a child? i can understand why he always looks so unhappy during the show. These kids seem oblivious to the cameras around them half the time. i don't think they really even crave the attention from the cameras but from their parents instead! They seem like they've been brought up very well. They know right from wrong and they are sweet kids.
