Punk Legend Diagnosed With Multiple Sclerosis

X singer Exene Cervenka released a pretty bummer-inducing statement on her website, revealing that she has been diagnosed with the debilitating disease multiple sclerosis.

The statement reads:

"After some months of not feeling 100% healthy, I recently had some medical tests run and the prognosis is that I am suffering from Multiple Sclerosis.
Apparently, it has been affecting me for quite some time.

Although this is obviously unfortunate news, I am choosing to see the positive in it.

I, and X as a band, have supported the Sweet Relief charity since the mid-1990's; the irony of this is not lost on any of us. Sweet Relief was started as an aide to uninsured artists by musician Victoria Williams when she herself was diagnosed with MS in 1992.

While this diagnosis will most certainly mean some changes for me, personally, it will not affect my commitments to the current X U.S. tour, nor will it affect my solo album that is slated for release this fall on Bloodshot Records.

My focus will certainly be on maintaining my health–many people remain strong and continue to live their lives as productively as they had before an MS diagnosis and I plan to be one of those people."

We appreciate her courage and her positivity, and we hope it serves her well in her upcoming medical battles!

I saw X many times in the 80s at the Whiskey on the Sunset Strip. They know how to put on a show! I wish her well.

As a person who is living with MS, I would like to offer a word of encouragement. A LOT of people will tell you 'oh hun, I am so sorry", but not many will say "ok, how are we going to fight back?" and truly give you that line of support that you need.

I suggest getting in touch with your local branch of the MS society, they will help you through the very first sets of emotions you will go through (denial, fear, hopelessness, strength..everything)

As I tell others, MS isn't a dead end road, you just have different paths to take to reach your destination.

      Take care my MS sister..

X is simply the best U.S. band ever and Exene is one of the prime reasons. Take care and stay well.

Thank you Janena, you said what I came here to say! I've lived with MS for the last 7 years. I'm a chiropractor and acupuncturist and practice on a daily basis. While there are days that completely suck, for the most part, you can keep up. The Local branch of the MS society can always helps, and can always use volunteers, whether or not you have MS!! Walks raise huge amounts of money. God love ya kiddo and there are a lot of us behind you!!

Exene!!! Exene!!!???? That sucks! This woman has the unique privilege of being Viggo Mortensens' (ex wife) and babymomma. This woman is the coolest woman in rock and roll. and very sexy.

I wish Exene the best for her future. Another rock singer, Australian Chrissie Amphlett of The Divinyls ("I Touch Myself") revealed last year that she was also diagnosed with MS. While Divinyls only had one hit in the US, they were one of the biggest bands of the 80s and early 90s here in Australia. Chrissie also played the role of Judy Garland in the original stage version of "The Boy From Oz", the musical about Peter Allen.

My mom has had MS for about 16/17 years and it gets tougher and tougher on everyone - not just her - every day. i hope this lady stays strong and has good people around her to help when she can't help herself!

OH Exene!!! I'm so sorry to hear that. But she's a fighter, I know she won't go down without a good battle.
We had us some good times at You've Got Bad Taste didn't we Exene?

    23. 23

Exene, we love you!!! Stay strong!!!

    24. 24

Exene is a great writer and performer, and I look forward to hearing her sing next week with X at the 40 Watt here in Athens. She's also a librarian–She didn't hang around mooching crumbs of fame or drugs like so many people whose band disbands or whose show is cancelled; she went to school and got a job. She's an artist and an inspiration–Rock on. She will meet this with her inimitable courage and grace.

As if Perez "Assmouth" Hilton knows anything about X or Exene Cervenka. Because anyone who knows her or X has taste and he is too busy with his head in Rihanna and Lady BlahBlah.

    26. 26

Never heard of her, a in UK but what a bummer. Still we have a young comic artist called Johnny who got MS and still paints ,and is terrific at handling things. He has had it for about 8 years and is only about 37 now.

I have MS. I am fine. It's different for everyone who has it. My hands shake all the time, I get tired often, I have difficulty with memory and concentration, and I get the tinglies, but I don't let it get in my way of doing things. It's an unpredictable disease, yes, but I don't dwell on it. In other words, you can live a perfectly healthy and fulfilled life with MS.

Wishing you all the best Exene!

I love X and saw them many times back in my L.A. college days.
