Twilight Director To Tackle Hamlet

Filed under: Film Flickers > Emile Hirsch

wenn-hirsch.jpg

What's Twilight director's Catherine Hardwicke's next literary film adaptation?

Shakespeare!

Hardwicke is reuniting with Lords of Dogtown star Emile Hirsch to "create a modern-day supernatural thriller based on Hamlet."

Hardwicke says she never expected to be adapting Shakespeare and admitted that the task is daunting, but assures everyone that "You will understand everything without having a copy of Shakespeare for Dummies with you."

Somehow….and we're going out on a limb here….we don't think this film will be anywhere near as successful as Twilight.

Just a small hunch!

Emile Hirsch is HAWT! Catherine is a shitty director though..

  2. 2

    robert pattinson please

  3. 3

Have you seen Catherine's interviews??? SHe is like one of those dumb hippy high all the time types. SHe is scary as a director….Twilight could have been done so much better by an actual director.

  4. 4

    Awesome!

  5. 5

really tubby, a teeny bopper flick with attractive teenagers will do better than an adaptation of hamlet. real astute observation mario

  6. 6

What???? Jack Black will star as Hamlet??????

  7. 7

Great, now she's going to ruin Hamlet. Seriously is she like a hippie or something? I get that vibe from her….she's not working with a full deck. xD I wonder how she's going to pull this one off.

  8. 8

anything with E-Hirsch sounds good to me!!

  9. 9

    twilight sucks!

  10. 10

SHAKESPEARE IS ROLLING OVER IN HIS GRAVE!!!!!!!!!

  11. 11

    he use to be cute

  12. 12

wasn't this the loser who introduced that girl to rob pattinson ?? and then the girl turned around and sold the pics to a photo agency claiming she had hooked up with rob?? UH NO THANKS. I'll pass on this loser.

  13. 13

Probably not as successful as Twilight,, but hopefully, better

NO NO NO i hope when they say 'you will understand everything' they don't mean they're going to change the speech. It's all in the language, why would you bother to do a version of Hamlet without the shakespearean language???? All those classic lines, puns, soliloquys and more gone, just so an audience that can't be bothered to learn it can understand.
I hate this idea, spesh with that stupid director who loves to put a bloody blue tint to all her shitty movies.
people should just know when not to touch Shakespeare.

  17. 17

Re: Iamthequeenofhearts – you are correct!

    From the MTV movies blog:

"Hirsch helped develop a modern retelling that will deal with the same themes — a young man who must decide whether or not to avenge his father’s murder by killing his uncle — but will take place in contemporary America. Don’t expect a lot of “To be or not to be” soliloquies, as this “Hamlet” will sport a new script penned by Ron Nyswaner (”Philadelphia”). Joining Hirsch and Hardwicke are “Milk” producers Dan Jinks and Bruce Cohen, who say their goal is “to present the story as a suspense thriller. We want to make it exciting and accessible for an audience today.""

I'm all for modern interpretation… but Hamlet can STILL be "understandable" in it's original form if it's done well. On the plus side, IF the movie ends up being decent, maybe it will spark people's interest in the original work. If Catherine's directing skills can be up to where they were with "Thirteen" rather than with "Twilight," then maybe it would be watchable. But even then, if it's just a "suspense thriller" without preserving the complexity and humanity of the original characters, then I'm not optimistic.

I wonder who's going to be their Ophelia?

  22. 22

That movie is going to SUCK!!! Why would anyone with sense let that woman near anything Shakespeare related!

  23. 23

hmm the only time i want to watch Shakespear in a film is if it has Leonardo Di Caprio in it!!
    Romeo and Juliet was amazing!

  24. 24

    He has beautiful eyes!! yum.

  25. 25

meet many rich people and good guys inculding some celebrities all these on ___classymingle.com ___ do not miss the love in your lifetime!

  26. 26

Catherine Hardwicke rocks. I hope she casts Nikki Reed in it! They are both amazingly talented.

  27. 27

hope she doesn't fuck up this movie like she did Twilight.

  28. 28

Catherine is my favorite director. She is very good at taking a vision and bringing it to life. I believe this new film will be great, she will absolutely put her all into it and create another unique masterpiece. And about the crackhead comment, she is quirky. A lot of artists are.

  29. 29

    OH HELLLLLLLL NOOO!!!

Twilight was laughably terrible. She will fuck Hamlet up. She's awful.

I do love me some Emile, tho.

  30. 30

you never know. romeo and juliette was pretty goooood. and emile is delish ;)

  31. 31

    Hardwick is a crappy director.

  32. 32

All these people who are saying Hardwick is a talented director are probably Twilight tools. Twilight was a horrible movie period. Hardwick, could have filmed dog shit turning white and called it Twilight and it still would have done as well as it did.

  33. 33

I'm SSSSSSOOOOOOOO glad Catherine got fired! Twilight shouldve been sooooooooooo much better……

  34. 34

Mario, please explain why you are so focused on the word "marriage", rather than working to get equal rights for gay couples. AND tell us what YOU are doing to actively change the opinion of those government officials and American people who completely disagree with you. Anyone can sit at a computer and complain, and that seems to be all you do. We all realize you have no life except to hate and "think" you are funny….so when it's time to get serious, what have you done to assist the cause.

  35. 35

    he wuz adorable n milk

  36. 36

oh damn, he is such a great actor.

  37. 37

"You will understand everything without having a copy of Shakespeare for Dummies with you." Yes, because "Hamlet" was soooooooo difficult to follow. Please Catherine, further dumb down American youth for us.

  38. 38

DON'T. FUCK. WITH. SHAKESPEARE. nothing worse than Americans doing Shakespeare. it's going to be slaughtered.

  39. 39

Emile Hirsch will be in it, so it will definitely be good.

  40. 40

    GO SPEED RACER!!!!!

  41. 41

WTF? Catherine is horribleeee. Shakespeare plays are to be admired. She did a brutal job @ twilight and I really don't wnat her to pull Shakespeare into the dirt too.

  42. 42

    OMGWHAT!?!?

Ef yeah. I lurv Emile. I just hope she does a great job if not she needs to GTFO.

    No joke!

  43. 43

that sounds like a MUCH better movie than twilight actually! Twilight was awful. It took me 3 times to actually get through the suck fest that was all rising action no climax and no falling action. The acting was poor, and taylor launter was the least believable of them all. He single handedly ruined that film. That anyone would ever believe that he was native american is an insult to Native American people. Don't you remember Romeo and Juliet by Baz Lurman? That was a fantastic idea. Can't wait to see Hamlet, irrigardless of who's writing it. I love shakespeare.

  44. 44

Re: cockface – Could not agree more!

  45. 45

    Re: insertsobriquet

go rent thirteen and learn something about Hardwicke. She didn't get to where she is by directing a dumb fucking movie like Twilight.

  46. 46

LOVES THIS NEWS. KNOWN OF IT FOR A BIT NOW. EMILE WILL DO JUST FINE. AND, IT'S NICE THAT HE'S TEAMING UP AGAIN WITH HARDWICKE, TOO.

  47. 47

Did my last comment take? Loves Emile-yo. He'll do well and it's neat that he's re-teaming with Hardwicke, too.
