Oprah Fires Back

oprah55ap.jpg

Newsweek's cover story this week covers the claim that Oprah Winfrey is too free wielding with her "health" advice and she abuses her influence by offering ineffective and dangerous cures on her show.

The article sites several guests who have offered questionable advice, including Suzanne Somers, Jenny McCarthy, and Physician/author Christiane Northrup.

Well, Oprah has seen your article and she has something to say back: Shove it!

No, sorry, we said that. This was her reply:

"For 23 years, my show has presented thousands of topics that reflect the human experience, including doctors' medical advice and personal health stories that have prompted conversations between our audience members and their health care providers. I trust the viewers, and I know that they are smart and discerning enough to seek out medical opinions to determine what may be best for them."

In other words, idiots shouldn't watch her show. Only smart, intellectual housewives.

And we think 23 years of broadcasting speaks for itself. She can't be doing that much harm.

Anyone who has Jenny McCarthy on their show IS doing harm. That woman has done a lot of damage to people with autism, first by pretending she invented it, then by pretending she can cure it. Loathsome.

  5. 5

    No TF dress shot?

  6. 6

Perez - you are such a dink. A true douche bag. The implication that housewives are stupid is so obvious from your post. Stop being an asshole. You know nothing about women and moms in general. Stop suggesting you do.

  7. 7

Please, anyone with any intelligence takes whatever this women has to offer with a grain of salt. This women is a MASTER at manipulation and she does know her audience very well and they are not "smart and discerning enough". If they were they would not watch her show or buy anything she sells.

"And we think 23 years of broadcasting speaks for itself. She can't be doing that much harm."

dr laura has 30 years of broadcasting, rush limbaugh has 30 years as well. do you also think they can't be doing that much harm?

  12. 12

all she does is help people… i wish i could do that… everyone that leaves comments today gets a free blowpop !!!!!

  13. 13

"And we think 23 years of broadcasting speaks for itself. She can't be doing that much harm."

dr. laura and rush limbaugh each have 30 years of broadcasting under their belt - are you also saying they can't be doing that much harm?

  14. 14

What about how she recommended that people should feel comfortable tipping 10% (or less!) at restaurants, even for good service, because of the economic crunch? I think that's pretty irresponsible as well.

  15. 15

Really, Perez? Housewives aren't smart and intellectual?? Well, this stay-at-home mom of three kids has a college degree, and worked as a sales and marketing exec for 6 years before I could afford to start a family. And by "afford to start a family", I mean afford to leave the work place and raise my kids myself, instead of paying a childcare to do it for me.

    You're brilliant. :-(

as a pharmaceutical rep in the women's healthcare field, i can tell you most ob/gyns cannot stand her and have to spend more time counseling their patients against oprah's advice than to prevent / diagnose / treat their patient population. i specifically sponsored a coffee bruch today with two gyn doctors that have a community open discussion and 70% of the talk was rebutting against oprah's advice on "bioidentical" hormones. it is crazy how much influence oprah does have on the population - but she does, for the most part, offer two sides to every issue which is necessary and she brings to light a lot of issues women face physically and emotionally.

  17. 17

    Re: Kristen in Colorado

Anybody who has three kids can't possibly be that intelligent. ;)

  18. 18

Oprah is FREE with her advice on things that she is NOT an authority on. Who knows what harms she does. Yes, there is a certain segment of her viewers who think Oprah is God. Who is she that someone can't call her on things she does? The trouble is people suck up to her , like Perez and think she can do no wrong.

  19. 19

She has become a little weird in the last couple of years….too new age…for me.

  20. 20

Oprah, by giving her own show to Jenny McCarthy, is contributing to the deaths of countless infants who won't get necessary vaccines because Ms. McCarthy claims they cause autism. I am sorry Jenny McCarthy has an autistic child. I note that she also claims she has cured him of autism through diet. Right.

Oh, by the way, I'm a housewife with a Ph.D. from UCLA, so I don't appreciate the slight.

  21. 21

Hey Perez: smart, intellectual housewives are some of your biggest fans! That's like Cher saying she doesn't support gay marriage. Don't be such a hater.

  22. 22

Does she still eat chicken fat sandwiches?

  23. 23

Outside of the states she's nothing? Wow. That is a bold statement. Anyone who watches a show. Takes the health advice and decides not to consult a Dr. before trying something is a fool anyway. She is an intelligent woman and obviously is not handing out intentionally harmful advice. People need to take responsibility for themselves and stop blaming Oprah. Everyone in this room who does not think that they would use their influence if they were OPRAH RICH which I am sure no one here is would be a liar. Can't believe how people try to pass the buck on her like she is spoon feeding you idiots this information and forcing everyone to do what she says. Take it or leave it but don't blame the messenger.

  24. 24

in other words idiots shouldn't take her advice literally w/o consulting their own doctor. Only normal people should watch her show

like someone brought it up that her "health" advice sucks. If only oprah would tell someone to "shove it" but sadly she never would

    Blah, Blah, Blah

    Re: kacky

Her son is better, she is just sharing her experience. If your son was diagnosed with autism, you tried a treatment, and he was better wouldn't you want to share it with others?

And if you think there isn't more to autism then what Docs tell us I have some some lovely swampland to sell you.

  27. 27

Whatever, I cured my crohn's disease with a herb and diet. This is after I polluted my body for years with pharmaceuticals which only made me sicker. There is other things out there besides the information that pharmaceutical companies and the AMA present.

The problem is there isn't enough research, but people have to understand that pharmaceutical companies are able to 'prove' the efficacy of their drugs because they have endless amounts of $$ to fund it. They also spend tons of cash on lobbyists to keep public research dollars away from alternative medicine research and to try and get the FDA to ban and tightly regulate alternatives. Now why would they spend this money if they didn't have something to lose?? Pharmaceutical companies don't want people to get better from something other than drugs because herbs, enzymes, and naturally occurring compounds can not be patented. I am not saying that everything can be cured without medicine or surgery, but we need to explore these options through research not try and suppress it. I spent 12,000 a year on drugs for crohn's and didn't get better, I spend about 400$ a year on herbs and enzymes and no longer have any symptoms. I want that 50,000$ back.

  28. 28

Wow Perez, you are such a tool. I will pit my intelligence and advanced degrees against your nanobrain any day. You provide entertainment, but half the time people are laughing at your stupidity not with you.

Re: rcktgrl88 – JM is right about autism and vaccinations. My niece, diagnosed with austistic disorder, was born prematurely, and received all the recommended vaccinations in a timely manner. Now, my sister wish she had waited and not overhelmed my niece's underdeveloped immune system with all those vaccinations.
