Research how the federal government works as much as you research Lady Gaga's schedule and perhaps you will be able to interpret politics like an informed person. No where in the constitution does it say that the federal government is allowed to define marriage, by giving congress that power you are opening a can of worms for them to create more preposterous legislation. He's offering a decent interpretation of the law that the federal government doesn't need to redefine a word. But that doesn't mean he's against them. There are two sides to a coin. Many religious persons believe gays should have rights, but don't think that marriage should be redefined. By redefining marriage, you are forcing your beliefs on us.

Marriage is a state's right issue per the 10th amendment. Leave it at that. I didn't vote for this celebrity president nor did I vote for McCain. I voted for the Constitution party candidate who received the endorsement of statesman, Ron Paul. Obama and McCain are politicians and they will say anything to get elected.

The problem is the federal government makes heterosexual marriage their issue, but it is not it's business to make same sex marriage? And everything is great in talk and all but an opposite sex spouse has the right of citizenship and residence, while a legal same-sex spouse of an American citizen could get deported. And frankly I'm surprised to hear that continuously coming from a person, whose family was separate in many states and equal just in some, I have trouble believing that this is his actual stance on these issues, rather than a political stance he is forced to take.

Even if the federal government got involved in making it a law that all gay people have to get married, sorry 'can' get married. even if all of this happened the benefits which seem to be the real issue, are only protected by the federal government, they do not distribute life insurance. Whether you work for a private company or a government agency there is an insurance company that decided the policies and benefits. These companies can pretty much do whatever they want and they don't like to cover people with alternative lifestyles, period. My friends insurance company dropped him after he tried to find out if they would cover his-her sex change. So don’t look to Obama to tell private companies how to do their jobs. We don't want the church running the state, but we also don't want the state running the business sector. There are much bigger issues that he has to deal with, those big banks and investment firms like AIG pay the benefits for teachers and other unionized groups, not to mention countless private companies, now if these companies don’t change their business practices no one gay or straight married or single is going to have anything to retire on. Someone once said, when they’re trying to get you to concentrate on one hand, you have to look at the other, it’s called slight of hand. Gays will win they’re rights its not a big deal, but while we watch this unfold, think about Somalia, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, the economy, the environment; I can go on

He didn't imply "separate but legal" at all. Making assumptions like that is hideous but considering it comes from you not surprising either. We have civil unions here and it means you have all the rights as a married couple and people just say they are married anyway. Marriage itself is actually a religious event & therefore unless you're religious civil unions are good as any.
