UCLA Insults Its Students

So while the students were Facebook petitioning for Conan O'Brien to replace James Franco, UCLA had its own plans.
Turns out they've selected Brad Delson of Linkin Park to deliver the keynote statement at the Letters and Science commencement ceremony.
Lame!!!!!
Dean and vice provost for undergraduate education in the UCLA College of Letters and Science, Judith L Smith, tried to soften the blow, saying, "Brad Delson is not only an innovative musician, but he is also a social activist who is committed to change through education… I am thrilled that Brad will be helping to commemorate this important occasion in the lives of our graduates and their families, and we are grateful that he has agreed to do so on short notice."
We're sure the kids in this year's graduating class are thinking, "Wait, what's Linkin Park?"

I don't like Linkin Park. Their music sucks. My favorite song right now is "Running to the Edge of the World" by Marilyn Manson from the High End of Low. It sounds like it could be in an action film. It probably will be.
I live a relatively large metropolien area and there was a huge controversy in my area because a high school validictorian had her speech nixed ahead of time by the principle and superintendent and now all the newspapers are crying on her behalf that her speech was "censored". Her speech was heavily laced with derogatory slang comments and words and also specifically singled out certain high school groups while elevating others to the previous one's advantage. It's like f@ck no, if you are going to be up giving a speech in front of your graduation class you are going to do it with the upmost class and dignity accompanied by the most articule, polite and well constructed sentences of your lifetime.
Linkin Park has sold more then 50 million albums, thats a great accomplishment. With that type of success comes many life experiences I am sure would be great to hear about. I am sure his speech will be awesome!!!

Dude, I'm about two years younger than these graduates, and I listened to Linkin Park all the time back in the earlly 2000's; granted, I was still in middle school, but all my friends, and pretty much everyone I knew were fans of Linkin Park. We're not that dense.
Now I'm not a fan of their new work, and I don't really think that a member would be a great fit for a UCLA commencement speech, but that's still fairly cool news for students, I feel.
I would be happy if ANY of the LP members spoke at my graduation. Too bad it's not Mike or Chester. LP RULES!!!!

From what I remember, Linkin Park was a huge hit with us, when we were what now is called "tweens" (yes, this was before the term "tween" existed)

As a UCLA student (class of '11) I would be highly insulted if i were graduating this year and had to listen to the guitarist from Linkin Park as my keynote speaker. Don't get me wrong, I like Linkin Park (they were super cool back when i was in middle school…) but if i don't even recognize the name of the speaker, that kinda sucks. Perez, you should have offered to speak after Conan denied us! You would have been a WAY more entertaining speaker than Brad whatever…

FYI Brad Delson is a UCLA alumni he earned a bachelor's degree in communication studies so he is the right person to give a commencement speech to the graduating class of 09. Linkin Park is a well respected, well known, international band I'm sure those students have heard of them. You just angry Perez because Linkin Park has more talent, creativity and of course WAY more intelligences than your sugar high, bubble gum pop, mindless idols Lady GaGa, Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus.

Brad Delson graduated from UCLA, the one of the largest universities in California, in 1999 with a BA, summa cum laude, in Communications. I think that's pretty damn impressive.
Having an artist of his nature is way better than having James Franco, who hasn't done as much as Delson has. Not only that, but UCLA is an extremely service oriented university — and he helped establish a non-profit organization, Music for Relief.
Besides, Franco was our (UCLA student's) classmate. Why would we want our former classmate to lecture us on our future?
