UCLA Insults Its Students

So while the students were Facebook petitioning for Conan O'Brien to replace James Franco, UCLA had its own plans.
Turns out they've selected Brad Delson of Linkin Park to deliver the keynote statement at the Letters and Science commencement ceremony.
Lame!!!!!
Dean and vice provost for undergraduate education in the UCLA College of Letters and Science, Judith L Smith, tried to soften the blow, saying, "Brad Delson is not only an innovative musician, but he is also a social activist who is committed to change through education… I am thrilled that Brad will be helping to commemorate this important occasion in the lives of our graduates and their families, and we are grateful that he has agreed to do so on short notice."
We're sure the kids in this year's graduating class are thinking, "Wait, what's Linkin Park?"

WTH perez, LP is VERY POPULAR
im sure everyone in the graduating class will know who LP is
it seems like you're saying they're some old band and young people have no idea who they are..who doesn't know who they are?!
How is that an insult? I'm 16 and I know who Linkin Park is. How would they not know who they are when Transformers is advertised everywhere? Or how about Numb/Encore?… I haven't met 1 person did not know a LP song.
What drugs are you on?
Linkin park are still very relevent and I'd rather have them speak at my graduation than some douche bag tv host.
And where exactly is the insult??? they didnt get the person they wanted… how is that insulting??
HaHA perez, you got nailed on this one.
Admit it, you are wrong and you should just take this post down before you make a total ass of yourself
Re: *stars101*sez_ShalaneMccall4EVA – I agree. I'm 27 and I love Linkin Park. Linkin Park is still a poplar band today. Much more than some of the crap you listen too Perez. I would have got Chester or Mike though.
i don't get it… why owuldn't they know who linkin park is?
I'm graduating from college next May and I know exactly who Linkin Park is. That being saiid, I don't consider them to be the pinnacle of musical accomplishment, but I suppose they had to make due with whoever they could find. Also, my favorite band was formed 30 years before I was born…by Perez's logic I shouldn't give a crap, should I? Maybe he'd be happier if we were all listening to masterpieces like "UR So Gay" and "Pokerface".
I think they got what they deserved. I'm actually kind of loving it. I know who Linkin Park is, but IMO they aren't as popular as Franco. They majority of them were being jealous haters saying they didn't want Franco becuz he hadn't done anything "noteworthy with his degree" since he got it. In essense pointing out that he's an actor, not a serious alumnus. Fuck them! As an actor, he's done more and made more money then they will probably see in their lifetimes, and he worked as an actor while getting his degree–no easy feat. They're just jealous of that fact so fuck them! A lot of people have degrees in something or another and never use them. Many times, all a degree will do is open doors, very few people get to actually work in the field they got the degree for in the first place. I'd rather have Franco than one of those fake "honorary scholars" who didn't lift a fucking finger to get their doctorate. As you can see from this example, a degree doesn't mean you have to be smart, just persistent. Only about 10% of degree holders are really intelligent, the other 90% worked their asses off and finally prevailed.
I don't know when Linkin Park formed, but I remember they became popular in like 2001. That was only 8 years ago. I am sure 22 year olds, who were 14 then and likely into their music, know who Linkin Park is. Just because a band has been around a few years doesn't mean they are not in or hot anymore. People of all ages like and dislike Linkin Park. So, you can't really be sure what the class of 2009 is thinking. Hell, I am not really sure YOU are thinking.
Man, who would complain about James Franco? He's awesome. And I'm sure they are well aware of Linkin Park's existence. It is highly unlikely that any of them care AT ALL about that band though. Seriously, worst music genre ever.
I'm 14 and I know who Linkin Park is.
Perez, your attempt at an insult failed. Bad
perez im not even close to be able to graduate college and I know who Linkin park is. You might possibly be the only one who doesnt.
Oh dear Perez. Your comments are quite revealing…I don't think you are very well educated. Looks like your bloggers are much smarter than you are. I graduated from UCLA and know they take their choice for a commencement speaker quite seriously . You are such a simpleton and assume way too much. Shame on you.
DAMN TEENIE BOOPERS! I want to punch them in their faces! Sheesh.
linkin park is the fifth most popular band IN THE ENTIRE FUCKING WORLD in a 2009 poll, asswipe. i dont know a college, high school, or junior high school kid who DOESN'T know who linkin park is. the only person who thinks they're unpopular is YOU, douche.
Brad Delson is a fucking idiot…during their tour in 2003 one of their security guards screamed at an 11 year old boy and made him cry during a meet and greet.
When I met them in Montreal at my meet and greet (which was really an autograph sessions where you were allowed one item to be signed as well as no photographs with the band and Mr. Han would not even look at the fans, he just signed the object and threw it to the next person beside him) I asked the band about this incident wherein Brad replied "yeah I hit him with a rock!" and then band and security all laughed.
This guy is a pig and the only decent people in the band are Mike Shinoda and Phoenix who both did not laugh and were actually embarrassed for the behaviour of the other band members.
Hahaha losers!
Yep, I would start my summer vacation early. They could send my diploma to me, I wouldn't sit thru that.
I would DIE if Linkin Park spoke at my commencement! I LOVE LINKIN PARK. They are only the best band ever. Perez, you are so lame. WTF? That's an amazing choice!
I know who linkin Park is and I am younger than the graduating class
I think it's more like "Who remembers Linkin Park?" rather than "What's Linkin Park". Linkin Park have lost relevance for ages now, and I would be insulted of any of their members spoke at my commencement.
Conan O'Brien on the other hand, would at least give an entertaining speech.
I like how you left out the majority of the article that said he was a Regents Scholar in UCLA, graduating summa cum laude and gives out 4 year scholarships to students attending there! Not to mention his band helped create Music For Relief, that's donated millions of dollars to victims of natural disasters.
Btw they're the biggest selling rock band of this decade with 50 million records and still selling. Look it up.
Re: poodle_posse – Agreed!
I do go to UCLA, I am graduating and going to this ceremony, and I didn't say, "Wait, what's Linkin Park?"
I did, however, say, "Oh, yeah, this might have been cool 10 years ago."
Stupid students who complained about Franco should be pleased with this replacement.
Are you fucking retarded? Just because YOU didn't know who Linkin Park was until UCLA decided to have Brad speak for them doesn't mean the rest of the world doesn't listen to and appreciate their music. If you haven't noticed, a few members of Linkin Park have been asked to speak at University graduations. Mike Shinoda spoke at the Art Center in Pasadena, CA at the end of April. How many graduations have YOU been invited to speak at? Let's count. Oh, wait–that's right. NONE. It is a great honor to be asked to speak at a University graduation. The only insult toward UCLA and its students that I see in this is the fact that YOU picked on them on your blog.
PS - Either you're HORRIBLE at math or just plain stupid, because when Linkin Park first came out with Hybrid Theory, /I/ was 11 years old. And /I/ will not be graduating University until 2011. So, unless the graduates of 2009 traveled back in time some how, they were about 13 when HT was released.
Thanks for the attempt, though. While it was feeble, it was a good laugh =).
you're so OLD perez, i listen to linkin park and i'm 17
ROFL. Perhaps they should have consulted you on the matter? I'm SURE they would prefer a lecture on the intricate philosophical meaning of a "poker face" by Lady CaCa.
Not everyone is as plastic as you, Perez.
mike shinoda of linkin park found your post funny! read his response on his blog.
this site wont post my link for some reason. but it's easy to find.
Greetings, Perez this is my first post here…
The only thing lame here is that I had to waste my time making an account, but I felt inclined to join in and inform you that you're an idiot.
Have you really lived under that big of a rock for the past nine years???
I guess being lead guitarist in a international rock band that has sold well over 50 million albums is lame.
I guess founding a charity that aids natural disaster victims and helps stop global warming is lame.
I guess annually funding a scholarship to UCLA is lame.
BBB is amazing person unlike you and your pathetic attempt at an insult.
He is a creative, funny, humble, and very talented guy.
I'm a married 22 year old and a longtime HxC LP fan, meeting Mike and Chester last summer was one of the most incredible days of my life. I got so much out of talking with them. These guys are my true idols.
I fully respect them, I would love to hear the message BBB has to offer those graduating students.
i just looked up charles mansons schedule (she´-djul..), it seems he's still available. he is proud of all the former and current graduates, from what i hear!! helter skelter!!
okay, when Linkin Park grounded (1996) I wasn't born! and I am still A HUUUGEEEE fan of them! (no, not only the 'slow' songs -.-') I know preety everything about them…
I think you've to know them! even if you not…uhm… LOOSER?! yeah, maybe thoese personns they don't know LP are LOSERS. My Opion^^
I love Linkin Park ! i think their music is great and unique!
If the graduates of UCLA don't know them … well what can I see?
turn on your radios? But I dont think that they dont .. even you know linkin park perez .. dont you ?
well brad delson graduated from ucla so why shouldnt he give the speech? yeah and i assume most people are aware of linkin park since theyre still about. who would you rather give the speech - someone supa famous like firecrotch or paris? famous for partying and getting wasted on coke, pills and booze? yeah i'd rather see someone give the speech thats capable of actually using a pen, and will write it themself.
Insult is where m'dear?
