Cleve Jones, an important activist who was privileged to work alongside the legendary gay rights leader Harvey Milk, announced plans Sunday for a march in Washington, D.C., this October to demand equality for gay and lesbian Americans.
Milk's protege sees the combination of recent events, including the election of President Obama and Proposition 8, as a sign that things should continue to push forward and more fervently in the demand of gay rights.
Jones promises: "All of this working together has opened this new chapter. I intend to make the most of it."
In front of a crowd of thousands yesterday at the annual Utah Pride Festival, Jones announced the planning of a march for October 11. The assembly will coincide with National Coming Out Day and launch a new chapter in the gay rights movement.

The issue isn’t if Obama or anyone else is against gay marriage. The issue is that it is illegal to not let them marry and more people that back that up the better. You know, Prez, I totally support gays and would never in a million years decriminate against them in public, private or the work force. Genghis, ha ha, beginning of time? Cave men and women did nothing even remotely similar to marriage. Marriage as we know it (romantic love) only started in the 1800s. Before that, in ancient Greece it was completely accepted and the norm for males to be sexual partners and the woman was only used to have children. For many centuries, women were used as commodities and marriage was nothing more than a way for the father to gain money/prestige. Most people have no clue about history and spout off "beginning of time" with no conception of what was happening even 1000 years ago.

perez himself messed them up over and over, though he didin't talk about the history of marriage, but he messes civil unions with marriage and so on. marriage has been a prestige thing and also an insurance since the "beginning of time" (befor greek culture - just learn a bit, will you?). marrying a man/boy was not included. gay fucking may have been common but had nothing to do with marriage.
gay love may be equal, but a gay union is not - and the gays should have that last tiny bit of respect to respect that.
How about removing Marrige from state control. Marrige is and always has been a religious custom. This requires its removal from government. After this, marrige will be recognized only by the respective church.
A new form of domestic partnership will be created and recognized thoughout the country. This need not only apply to lovers, but possibly to lifelong friends, or long term roommates.
Of course any couple who has been traditionally married will have to apply for domestic partnership. In addition, any gay couple could be married through a religious institution that recognizes their union.
I would love to get some feedback on this idea. I have heard only one Pastor make a similar argument on the Dailey Show, his name escapes me.
