Back in 2005, it was reported the pop icon Prince was in desperate need of hip replacement surgery. He has yet to have the procedure, as the artist is a Jehovah’s Witness and - per reports - according to the religion, blood transfusions are not acceptable.
But that's a surgery? That's not okay?
Though there was talk of a "secret surgery" to fix the problem, Prince has been seen walking with cane and there are now reports that the injury has intensified.
Now he has two injured hips!

Since he has supposedly opted not to have surgery, he practically lives on pain killers to deal with the condition.
A source reveals that: “He’s popping pain killers and hoping it will all go away.”

Hope he learns how to play a guitar from the wheelchair he is bound to take residence in!

pain killers all day is ok but a blood transfusion during a surgery isn't? he is too young to have this pain for the rest of his life…..he needs to talk to the elders ( or what ever they are called) and get a waiver!
Lots of Jehovah's Witnesses have surgery but do not sign off on blood transfusions in the pre-surg legal docs.
Ok, I am not one for ripping on somebody's religion, however, it just does not make any logical sense to me that God would want His followers to be addicted to pain killers as opposed to partaking in a surgery that would help somebody live a more fulfilling happy life (and therefore more likely to help others).
Looks like he's done one too many splits. But he can affort to stock up on OxyContin. If not call fat ass Rush limbaugh.
If you have to be on pain killers all day then that's a huge sign its time to get the surgery already. No wonder he has both hips messed up…his body can only take so much before it gives up.
There are other options aside from the widely used 'blood' transfusions. That is no reason for him to delay.

Jehovah's Witnesses have surgery all the time. I think this is his own personal decision. You can have hip surgery without a blood transfusion. That is what they are opposed too not the surgery.
why doesn't he just stockpile his own blood and then it wouldn't be like he was taking someone else's blood? DUH!

Surgery isn't the problem. Disregarding his religious beleifs are. Unlike so many, it seems Prince has a religious conviction stronger than most celebs. Good for him. I respect that.

What about autologous blood? This would be his own blood that is taken before the surgery. Also, not everyone who has a hip replacement needs surgery. But seeing how skinny and anemic he looks now, I bet he would need it.
being an orthopaedic nurse he can have his hip replaced even being a Jehovah Witness. What ever blood he loses will circulate through a filter and will go right back in him…..no transfusion needed. Pop those Percs Prince!!!

Religious freedom for all, that's what our great country is about. However, when religion, spirituality. cults, and any other ideology get in the way of public health, there are serious problems. At least Prince doesn't have a parent denying their child access to health care because of their beliefs that causes them death or serious injury like some people, who should clearly be in jail. Prince is a grown man, if he makes that decision for himself and deals with the consequences, then he can do whatever he wants. It's kids involved in these situations or people who don't have much of a say that really make it criminal.
A religion that doesn't support blood transfusions, but its okay to pop endless amounts of painkillers… seems like someone is kind of an idiot.

Anyone who reads the scriptures would know that Jehovah (GOD) does not condone the practice of eating or receiving blood because it is 'sacred' . Jehovah Witness only preach God's word, they do not force you to do what they teach for humans are imperfect and make mistakes. So I guess Prince is remaining faithful to His God and we can only be proud and send him our warmest thoughts.
Besides, it's only obvious that receiving anyone else s blood that is not your own has a RISK of even more serious health problems, I guess it is just for our own good.

Get your facts straight Perez. Jehovahs Witnesses have surgerys all the time. They dont accept blood transfusions but the medical field has a ton of alternatives. If he isnt having the surgery, his religion isnt the reason.

The Jehovah's Witness faith, which is recognized by the federal government as a legit religion not a cult, are not against surgery. There are several alternatives to blood transfusions used everyday by JW's (and anyone who prefers/requests/needs an alternative)… I think you're slightly off the mark on this one… I think there's a two-tiered reason why they are so adverse to blood transfusion. One, I think it is just faith based on interpretation of biblical scripture. Second, I think they believe that the sharing of blood is unclean. Not taking sides, just saying that there's probably more to Prince's 'surgery phobia' and the JW's faith.
There are NOT a 'ton of alternatives' (blood transfusion alternatives) this is Watchtower cult propaganda.

There are lots of alternative procedures he can have. He doesnt need to have a blood transfusion for hip surgery. JW's are not against surgery AT ALL.
There is no need for him just to take pain killers all the time, there are plenty of other options available if he wants them!
It's not that he cannot have surgery he has to have a bloodless surgery. They can be done as my mother in law had her hip replaced and she is a Jahovas witness. Witnesses do not take this blood transfusion thing lightly, they don't have them. Hope he does some research and finds a good bloodless surgeon. There are not many of them willing to do that type of surgery due to the liability so Maybe he should check out Portland's Good Samaritan hospital, thats where she got hers done at.

Any surgery can be performed without blood including open heart surgery and organ transplants using any other blood volume expanding transfusions. They are acceptable and frankly more condusive to quick healing. Suggesting his religious conviction and decision not to accept blood is a reason for him opting out of surgery is ridiculous. Obviously, to people not prone to fostering negative gossip and hysteria (read: not you), there are other reasons. So shut the hell up.
All surgery has a mathematical percentage of serious risk attached to it, and not all surgery produces the desired result. There are many factors to consider, and the decision is ultimately the patient's.

The issue with the Jehovah's Witnesses and their blood transfusion ban is the Watchtower cult that governs JW's has a twisted flip-flopping blood ban that KILLS people and it is all made up by some old men in Brooklyn New York.
The JW defenders come on like they are the pioneers of bloodless surgery techniques,they are not it's just medical science advancements in part because of blood shortages.

Actually, Jehovas witnesses are SO against blood transfusions.
Take my story - my grandad needed a blood transfusion as he had lost a lot of blood (back in the 80's) My gran, who is a very strict Jehovas Witness didn't want my grandad to get the transfusion - even though it was to save his life and she forced it upon him not to get one. The hospitals didn't abide her wishes though as they ended up giving him one anyway - otherwise, he would die and it's not their duty to let that happen.
So anyway.. they gave my grandad contaminated Hep C blood which then later killed him.
It may have given him a bit of a longer life than dying on the spot, but not very long at all. A horrible story, yes. I'm glad they actually check the blood now.
But you see, he could have been gone long before that if the ignorance of religion had taken it's toll.
My gran tried to convert me into the religion and as a kid, of course you're gonna believe that if you're in a certain religion, you'll live forever.
After going to a few "meetings" at a kingdom hall, I then saw it as bollocks. I see ALL religion in that light now.

So long as there is (enough) pain, there won't be addiction.
Blood cannot be tampered with or pass through a machine/another body, then be put back into your own, as per the JW's I've spoken with (as a nurse).
We don't know Prince's full medical background. He could very well have an issue that would require him to need a transfusion.

it's not the surgery that's the problem. it would be finding a surgeon who is willing to perform a bloodless surgery, which many are reluctant to do for liability reasons. there are many safe ways to perform this kind of surgery without blood and surgeons who are educated in these ways are always more than willing to work with people who have strong religious convictions. jehovah's witnesses get the necessary medical treatment within their religious beliefs and would not ignore their health, and living on pain killers is not something the religion would encourage or condone.
He can still have surgery, just if he prefers not to accept blood, he has to do is to sign the no blood waiver. There has to be another reason why he's not going through with the surgery.
What an idiot. Bill Maher has said in the past that religion is a mental illness. In this case he's right! I don't think any surgery can be done without the possibility of needing a blood transfusion, even if it's the most remote of possibilities. Prince needs to think about his quality of life. Prescription painkillers are dangerous and he will eventually develop a tolerance to them. It's not a long term solution.

He doesn't have to have a transfusion. When I've had my joints replaced (I'm not old, I have a disease) they used this cool filter thing that basically puts your own blood back in your body. Hopefully he will take care of the problem really soon before things get so bad he's still messed up after the surgery.
I'm a Jehovah's Witness too, and I'm not sure why he opts not to have surgery when when he can sign off not to accept blood. So I'm sure that's not the reason because it doesn't make any sense.

There are other elective non blood transfusion options (that take time to work) for those who don't need EMERGENCY blood.The fact is the Watchtower Jehovah's Witnesses twisted ever changing ban on 'whole' blood has caused the deaths of thousands of men,women,and children.If Prince was to bleed heavily the transfusion option would not be available.BTW-JW are NOT allowed to store/bank their own blood either.

I was raised as a Witness, I am not a practicing anything now and I have never agreed with their stance on this. My grandmother has my Uncle written in as power of attorney in her living will because she knows he is the only one who will put religion before personal want…stupidity…
