Arnold Terminates School Books
Filed under: Politik > Arnold Schwarzenegger
In an effort to assist the $24 billion budget deficit in California, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger plans to bring the education system into the 21st century. But in a good or bad way????
Schwarzenegger is looking to eliminate text book spending and funnel those funds into more electronic learning, which is more cost effective and relevant for kids today.
In a press conference, he announced his plan and assure his state's citizens that the move will be highly beneficial:
"For so many years, we've been trying to teach the kids exactly the same way. Our kids get their information from the Internet, downloaded onto their iPods, and in Twitter feeds to their cell phones … Basically, kids are feeling as comfortable with their electronic devices as I was with my pencils and crayons. So why are California's school students still forced to lug around antiquated, heavy, expensive textbooks?"
While it is clearly a smaller corner to cut, it might actually do some good, as long as the school is equipped to handle the move to a digital classroom. One textbook can average in price between $75-$100 and the numbers add up with the size of California schools. However, unless the school has the kind of hardware to sustain the change, then it becomes a useless endeavor.
So, then what Arnold? Didn't think this through, did you?

FUCKING USELESS TOOL! AND I'M TALKING ABOUT ARNOLD!
HE IS AN IDIOT…MAYBE HIM BEING THE GOVENATOR HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH CALI'S DEBT! GET RID OF HIM AND THAT MIGHT BE THE FIRST STEP TO FIXING THE STATE'S PROBLEMS. DOESNT SEEM LIKE HE HAS DONE ALL THAT MUCH TO HELP CALIFORNIA IN THE FIRST PLACE, IVE HEARD MORE NEGETIVE THAN POSITIVE ABOUT HIM…I REALLY HOPE THAT THE STATE DOESNT LET HIM PUCH THIS THRU…IT SEEMS LIKE COMPUTERS AND MORE ELECTRONICS WOULD COST WAY MORE THAN BOOKS, NOT TO MENTION THE ENERGY COST TO RUN THE EQUIPMENT…
Oh yes, let's have mongo Mario for Gov! That will save the state!
who is going to pay for the increase in eye damage from all of the screen time?
Of course, he thought of that. that is why he wants to cut the book expense in exchange of a digital one which is readily available online, stoopid!
FUCKER IS CLOSING THE STATE PARKS. HE MUST HATE CALIFORNIA. OUR BIGGEST, MOST ABUNDANT COMMODITY IS THE BEAUTY OF THIS STATE. HE IS RUINING IT IN ONE FAIL SWOOP.
.
MOST SCHOOLS STRUGGLE TO HAVE A COMPUTER LAB, PERIOD.
.
KIDS DROP BOOKS. COMPUTER INJURIES ARE ON THE RISE FROM DROPPING THEM ON THEIR FEET! WHAT WORLD DOES THIS DOUCHE LIVE IN.
.
FUCK SCHWARZENEGGER!
This will NEVER work. And how much do functioning computers for each school cost? And what happens if the computer system is down one day? I remember in high school PLENTY of times that happened in those learn microsoft word/powerpoint/excel classes. Come on, you need textbooks. Expensive as they may be, you can reuse them for years and THEN have them replaced. Computers crap the bed so easily especially with kids going on websites they shouldn't and getting viruses! And yea, I know someone is going to write back and say "they have blockers for certain websites!" There is ALWAYS a way around those things.
I'll be back!!!!!!!!!!
It is a total given by today's standards. Why would you stop letting the students from buying books if there is no sufficient back up to his plan.
He is not stupid, after all, like this fugly fat inglorious basterd.
#2 Push*** this thru…(damn im good for typos in the morning..lol)
he's right and very forward thinking, i'm impressed. it will work. a lot of those electronic devices can be gotten on the cheap. they've already made a laptop for poor kids in africa for like 100$ a pop
Bad idea. Kids need to know how to sit down at a freaking table and open up a book and read it. I still have a rotary phone in my kitchen and some little sh*t was over the other day and had no idea what it was. This other little sh*t couldn't even figure out how to work an adding machine. Amazing.
Build some Mexican Schools…………..
For a governor that's run the State of California into the ground, I'd be very leary of anything he proposes.
I am a teacher and my school has zero technology! I have a broken computer in my room for the students. I admit I teach at a low socioeconomic school, but my friend is Calabasa does not have technology either. My students will never read a book if this passes! Arnold needs to go!
I disagree. Nothing beats old fashion books.
Trust me, having books in electronic forms will reducing studying time of students.
Bullcrap!!
text books cost A LOT LESS then computers!!
let's be honest, it's easier to learn from books then computers, and this is coming from a 16yr old kid
Chuck Norris KNOWS Victoria's secret.
Re: JigSaw – Hey Dude…..Watching any hockey????
Re: UrMajestyMsG – Hottie………..
)
MAC OR PC ARNOLD?
.
Chuck Norris once ate a 72oz steak in 45 minutes, he spent the first 35 banging the waitress.
Re: Long Dong Connery – YA, CHUCK NORRIS, ANOTHER GIANT DOUCHE JUST LIKE ARNOLD!
Re: Long Dong Connery – better yet, get another person for the job… Morning
What a fucking moron! Get rid of all the books? Might as well let 2 dudes who butt fuck each other get married! WTF happened to this country:(
Re: dabears – haaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Re: Long Dong Connery – Dong, good morning sir…how have u been?
Re: JigSaw – Groovy Morning to u too…
IDIOT!!!! the internet costs money. By the way did he think about all these people out of work who probably turned of their internet service to cut their household costs? Or maybe not every house has internet? So then what, those kids are just screwed? Dumb ass
I can see some text books going-history books get out of date. but english books? ALSO ARNOLD, NOT EVERYONE CAN AFFORD A COMPUTER AND THEY DO CRASH. NOT EVERY HAS AN IPOD! you can probably do away with the math books, my kids receive soooo many dittos, that why bother ? Science though????? science, constantly changes, so you need new books, but it you do dittos, handouts, you will have alot.
wtf?!
not everyone can afford a computer … especially now with the whole economic crisis .. and then be forced to get an internet plan ?!
sure there are libraries out there, but they are not accessible in some communities
ugh what a disgrace .. all his plans are towards cutting education
what happened to empowering the youth and making education accessible to all?
So, with a classroom of 33 students and 4 computers, I am supposed to teach kids online. Many students in lower economic areas don't have computers, therefore, using them becomes a challenge. I guess as a teacher we will be teaching them mostly how to use computers. thanks arnold!
Jesus Christ! California Education is already lacking in MOST aspects. I don't see how making CA's children dumb is going to help anything. This is not the California i was raised in.
Is he kidding?! That might work on the West Side but the LAUSD is full of kids who don't speak English, spend half the year digging potatoes in rural Mexico or Guatemala and can barely use a standard telephone let alone own a cell phone or have a Twitter account. When the parents live 13 to a one room garage conversion, buying the kid a computer isn't at the top of their list. This plan too will fail.
I think Arnold has a good idea for once.
Re: wendyermina – 32 Like your job isn't hard enough! You are in a strangle hold as to what you teach and how. Now you'll need to be a computer tech as well! (but thank you for being a teacher btw)
.
Keep them down, dumb and in the military. Seems to be the future.
Re: UrMajestyMsG – Good, just busy as fuck…….. LOL
)
Yer looking hott…………..
Textbooks now are generally owned and operated now by digital publications.Post secondary down to grade schools now give their criteria and course work through online operations. With this will do not only for the Gov. of CA, but the state, it will eliminate what already has the print media in a frenzy…too much freedom. So why not go online.
things like this make me really sad. why the hell are people so obsessed with using technology for technology's sake. books are an irreplacable learning method, and you can guarantee that they won't suddenly crash and set you back to suqare one. what's wrong with enjoying the simpler things in life like a book? this is just pointless and it will widen the gulf between young and old.
Ah, way to further disadvantage the disadvantaged. Where, pray tell, are lower-income students going to obtain their computers, online access, and quiet place in which to access these cyber texts? Stupid and unjust.
Re: Long Dong Connery – I KNOW WHAT U MEAN…IVE BEEN SO INCREDIBLY BUSY OVER THE LAST COUPLE WEEKS ITS BEEN CRAZY! IM SOOO READY FOR A VAY-CAY! LOL…(VACATION)
Sounds like a BS No Child Left Behind Initiative. No empirical evidence to back this up- my husband teaches at a school that uses laptops and the kids can not write a paragraph to save their lives. This technology is a low-end bargaining tool that will damage students. Stop giving them fucking technology. What's wrong with a good book?
This sickens me. Closing state parks, taking away book- what's next??? Time to recall this asshole.
thumbs up
Prep schools on the east coast are making moves like this. My old prep school is thinking about digital textbooking in some classes which is cheaper/more efficiant just paying $2 a chapter and printing it or uploadong it to a Kindle or Iphone/Pod/blackberry. These are also prep schools that typically charge 40 grand a semester. Arnolds plan will work in Beverly Hills ….. But what about Compton?
He did warn you, The Rise of the Machines.
i think its a pretty good idea tbh.
Yes, because every student has a top of the line computer with DSL service at home. What a crap idea!
All he has to do is get the lifers off welfare and stop giving benefits to illegals -regardless where they're from!-and we'd have more money than we know what to do with! Why is that such a difficult concept?!
Re: Angus8 – LMAO!! He'll be back..
Great idea to go electronic, but we are waaaay behind that at this current point. I am a teacher in CA and I would love for this to happen, but first we need to worry about lack of funds for basic things such as paper. The last three months of school I had to buy copy paper out of my own paycheck because there simply wasn't any in the office. There were no pencils, EXPO pens, glue, etc….so I had to foot the bill. Then, 15 of our teachers (including me) got pinkslips at my site with an ever-growing population of kids coming in next year. Let's work on funding for actual teachers and supplies and not for crap like this.
I need my books there is noooo way imma stare at a computer screen for 2 hours. Thats just crazy.
he's not thinking about the different learning styles kids have. some need the books for visual learning and so they can take better notes and go over it again
Publishers run this state's educational system! Schools have been forced for years to adopt new books every few years in order for them to receive their state and federal funding. Not much has changed with math in hundreds of years, yet school have to spend millions on new books. I can not see publishers changing this arrangement there has to be a catch to this. MEG WHITMAN FOR GOVERNOR !!!!!!!!!!!
It's been a long time coming, schools need to upgrade to digital regardless of what Arnold says. And I do think he thought this one through. It has to happen sooner or later. How many kids read those expensive textbooks anyway? They are more likely to read digital.
This is the future; can't wait until all universities and all public libraries move to digital format, too.
Re: Shastamagic – Jerry Brown for Governor!
Or, Gavin Newsom, or Dianne Feinstein!
.
Fuck Arnold.
I think it's a good idea. Although it may be a little premature. But this is definitely the way the world is turning. At my school, we have smartboards and are getting "smart desks". Arnold's plan is just the next step. I think it really could work. I'm sure the schools aren't going to be paying for it on their own.
Sweetpiece- If you want the problems of California to be fixed then why would you vote for Brown, Fienstein, or NEWSOM?????? They are part of the problem. Meg Whitman is a business woman and wants to run this state like the business it is. We need to stop electing do nothing lifelong politicians and start to get some REAL people into public service. People who have managed business and payroll. People who now what debits and credits are. Oakland is on the verge of bankruptcy ( Brown) Feinstein is as corrupt as they come, check out her husband and the 25 billion they embezzled from the American taxpayers, and Newson only cares about his looks and if people "like" him. I love San Francisco, but I do not want our entire state to be ran like it is!
Cali is the 5th largest economy in the world, how in the hell did they fall 24 billion in debt?!
Oh, I know, same as Illinois: the ridiculous amount of money spent on illegals. Free health care for people and their kids who are not citizens has driven Il into 14 billion in debt. Now we are looking at major tax increases to pay it all off.
When our states decrease the amount of funding and aid to soldiers and their families and increases the amount to illegals……something is really wrong…
Re: Shastamagic – I will wait to pass judgement when the facts come out.
The state flourished under Brown.
Deukmajian, and Wilson contributed greatly to the decline which Davis took the fall for.
Idiots thought Arnold could "save" them. Stupid fuckers. Now look where we are.
Re: Herbert West – 61 Where are your figures to support that bullshit?
Re: malkovich – right you are, malkovich!
It's better to not have a textbook. I say this as a masters in education student. Textbooks cater to a form of outdated and ineffective teacher. With the internet and access to primary sources, these books just lock teachers into using outdated and uninteresting information. Kudos to Arnold if it's implemented well.
Re: Elvinqueen –
Your whole state government needs to go. It took alot more than one person to the massive damage done to Cali. It took a long time to do the massive damage to Cali. Try voting them all out. Hell, try voting for conservatives who won't run your state into massive debt every year.
Re: SWEETPIECE! –
That's right, keep voting in the same incompetent clowns over and over and over. What is the definition of insanity? Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.
THIS REALLY PISSES ME OFF!!!!!!
For the last 3 years i'm trying to contact a couple important people like Oprah, Bill Gates, Steven Ballmer, Steve Jobs, Paris Hilton, CEO of Google, with exactly this idea that, and read this carefully, I FIRST EMAILED TO THE DEPARTEMENT OF EDUCATION under the BUSH administration.
First a Dutch company uses a part of my idea, then Google, 2 years later GOOGLE AGAIN, and now Mr Schwarzenegger. ALL BEHIND MY F****** BACK!!!
IS
Continued,
IS THAT THE THING THAT WE MAY EXPECT FROM AMERICANS?
That is MY idea, which probably was told by somebody who just made a couple million dollars selling it to others, while i was under the impression that emails to the authorities are kept CONFIDENTIAL, which mean DON'T SHARE WITH THIRD PARTIES.
Any lawyer(s) that want to back me up with this?
Or shall i just ask somebody to hack into i don't know very sensitive companies, steal the plans on how to make an atom bomb or something, make my own , drop it anywhere i like? because that's no different from what they've done to me (and NO THIS IS NOT A TREAD, IT'S AN EXAMPLE, before you do such a cowardly act of sending the fbi or something to my address)
Not only is this not fair (and i know what you are gonna say now, LIFE AIN'T FAIR), this is also BACKSTABBING, not to mention ILLEGAL to just share my thoughts without my consent to THIRD PARTIES.
I don't have any problems with Governor Schwarzenegger, but if he wants my help on this, I WANT MY 10% which i mentioned in ALL my messages.
Given the fact that now SEVERAL companies use MY IDEA behind my back, it proves to me that MY IDEA actually WORKS. SO if you want to use MY IDEA, you will give me my 10%.
And to believe i was going to help A BILLION people in AFRICA and ASIA, with providing them with an UNLIMITED source of CLEAN WATER.
And just because a couple of guys rather fill their own pockets because apparently they aren't RICH enough already, a couple million just DIED over the time that NOBODY bothered to ask my permission, neither did they contact me.
This is really a new LOW to America, how backstabbing.
Oh and btw, i kept ALL my messages and emails on file, so the hackers that STOLE parts of what i've wrote, i also keep it on OTHER media.
regards, but they aren't kind this time,
Flor Hoorebeke
Belgium, Antwerp.
for the FBI that doesn't bother to read the entire sentence, and halted at ATOM BOMB, my address is 18 bus 1, Pacificatiestraat, 2000 Antwerp.
Don't bother coming in without a court order, because i will knock you the fuck out! (that's something they refuse to do over here in belgium, because they hide behind the fact that our judges are loaded with cases, over 140000 still to do, and they will remain rising, until the people that work for the law keep disobeying the law, and provoke the citizens to do more illegal stuff)
Another note, that OTHER MEDIA, is not kept in my home, if you thought you could just come in, and steal everything away from me.
Ugh i hate him os much, i am a high school student and am in a program called puente that helps latinos be more prepared for college and is a really good program but because of the budget cut, the program is threatened to be elimanted.
Umm FYI books are usually more expensive than $100… So that stat is wrong. (I'm a 3rd year college student, with new books each semester). But I've gotta see all the facts & statistics about how many schools have computers.. Most have MANY public computers on campuses.
Psh, California's rich. They can get that shit sorted out.
It's actually a pretty good idea. I hate using text books, and e-books actually offer more features and videos.
It doesn't make sense. The information on the Internet isn't anywhere near the depth of information available in a book. Nobody's going to do serious research and writing and just post it on the Internet for free. You gots to pay to play!
I am a state worker, and even though I am pissed about my pay being cut; I do realize that the man has some good ideas. This will definitely bring us into the 21st century! Good Job Arnold, as long as you can get the technology into the schools….the children are the future!! I am sure the older people of the country will frown on this because it involves change and most people cannot stand that, especially the older…old-school people.
WTF?! That's horrible, everyone would have to own a computer and do you think the pupils would actually be able to concentrate!!! I know the textbooks are heavy and expensive but it's the classical way to learn and quite efficiant.
I think it's a great idea. They need to get glare reducers and offer refurbished computers to needy families if this is going to work. Parents should also be able to purchase hard copies if they wish or set up a parent run book exchange. We need to start getting creative in this budget crisis and I'm all for an investment in technology in the schools which will save $$ in the long run. We'll miss you Ah-Nold
Somebody needs to figure out why these textbooks are so expensive … that is the underlying problem. The books don't need to be maintained and upgraded the way that electronic devices will need. The text book industry is a rip-off, penalizing a captive audience.
It's the way things are going to be. Books cannot change with the times as electronic info can. Once the initial investments have been made on software/hardware, it will be much more cost-effective, timely, and versatile. No kid will have to 'miss class' ’cause he has a cold. With a laptop everything from the day's lesson will be at his/her fingertips. And no more lugging around HEAVY book bags…way to go Arnold
