      wouldn't a single mom or single dad with 3 kids qualify for a family rate at a pool? so why couldn't they have 2 moms with kids qualify? things like this make no sense. I don't care whether you are for or against gay marriage; this makes no sense.

      My entire family is from Idaho (most of them are considerably more open minded than most)…and let me tell you something about Idahoans: they are who they are and they don't try to hide it. They may be homophobic, and racist, but at least they don't try to hide it or deny it (ahem, Utah). It's very sad the backwards way they think, but that's just the way it is. The people in Idaho are very nice…but open minded they are not.

      I'm not saying all people in Idaho are like that, but the fact of the matter is the ones who are like that happen to be the most outspoken.

      On a side note: I'm surprised this happened in Pocatello…people there tend to be a bit more rebellious and open minded. It's a blue collar college town…there is more diversity and it's somewhat more liberal than the rest of the state.

      I live in Idaho and work for the state. They allow a partner of any sex to sign up with you at our recreation center and give them a family discount, so it was pure discrimination at the pool, not a matter of law.
      This was in a very rural area, not all of Idaho deserves to be labeled because of a couple of hicks.

      I'm SO sick of all this effing bigotry! Why can't people see this is the EXACT same thing that went down with the African Americans and separate but equal? Makes me sick that some people let their religious hate or intolerance affect a whole population of people. It's NEVER been okay to systematically deny a whole group of people the same rights as everyone else. You'd think in this day and age that would be recognized.

      I think gay couples should be encouraged to become foster parents.

      What foster children need is a loving home, no matter what form it comes in. Those children are probably in a exponentially better situation now than the one they were in before.

      It's sad people can't let go of their bigotry and see what in reality is really in the best interest of the children. If they weren't in the same-sex couple's home, they very well could have been in an abusive home where they were just seen as a welfare check.

      I am from Idaho and this story sickens me. Pocatello is a backwards middle of nowhere town full of mormons and hate mongers. This is not a reflection on the whole state. I live in Boise which is as liberal and accepting of a town as you can find in any conservative state. We have openly gay elected officials and a very accepted gay community. Its horrible that the action of a few hateful zealots can reflect so poorly on a state that is trying to make such advances.

      LilJoJo, you are right on point!! i live in boise, idaho, been here for about 15 years…and it is definitley one of the most conservative places you could ever imagine. the majority of the population is mormon…and sadly, i'm not surprised to see this story. although it is sad that people, especially young kids, are discriminated against this way…its just the way it is here. maybe someday it will be different…

      I lived most of my life in Idaho - What everyone should know is that eastern Idaho is EXTREMELY Mormon, but not all of Idaho is. . . Don't judge all of us based on the extremists in Eastern Idaho! Please!! Just stay away from that side of the state! Hell, even Couer d'Alene is trying to break from their image of being racist - they prosecuted the aryan nation on tax evasion just to be able to close down their compound - to judge an entire state based on one incident is pretty unfair. You will find examples of racism, hatred and homophobes in every state in the nation. But you will also find loving, caring, non-homophobe, non-racist people in everyone of those states as well.

      I am from Idaho and have never been more disappointed/embarrassed of the state i grew up in. Just because there are conservative, ignorant, and disgusting humans there does not mean we all are. I am not gay, but am all for gay rights and equality!

      I have lived in Idaho for the majority of my life, in Boise, Pocatello, and Twin Falls currently.

      I agree with everything except about Pocatello being liberal…Pocatello is the LEAST liberal place in Idaho I have lived. I went to school there for two years and was miserable because I am very…democratic and open minded. Boise is the most liberal place…I was practically shunned in Pocatello for not being Mormon.

      Also Lava Hot Springs is about 30 minutes away from Pocatello in a very small town that is albeit very close minded.

      Its sad that this happens, but I guarantee as far as honoring same sex marriage or legalizing it, Idaho will be the absolute LAST state to do so, if they EVER do so.

      I to grew up in closed minded never left the 30's town in Idaho. Their thinking is so backwards and scary. I am so glad to have escaped.
      Its stuff like this and on top of this now the guy who went on shooting spree at holocaust museum in DC used to live with the white supremicists in Idaho. People ask me where I am from I say Ny I find it very hard to admit where I come from even though my roots are there

      It seems as if the YMCA can offer a reasonable definition of family for their membership fees, so can you. They define a family as two adults and their dependent children. It is a definition that has been widely adopted in many organizations in the last few years, as non traditional family structures have become more prevalent. I am unsure as to why this definition is so radical that it cannot be adopted in your institution, regardless of the state's position on same sex marriage. I assume your state does not have a law or statute which formally defines what qualifies as a family, and if they do, I'd be interested to see it.

      It is a cop out, and if you're intelligent enough to run an organization such as the one you have been tasked with, you are intelligent enough to know that you are just making excuses for an archaic and discriminatory rule. The adherence to this rule calls into question whether or not you are using your position to leverage your own personal beliefs on the community which supports the hot springs. While same sex marriage is not yet legal in Idaho, I'm pretty sure that discrimination has not been decriminalized.
